Blog 4 - Practicing Narrative

Response due Wednesday October 2, 2013:

In the spirit of this week's assignment, think about the numerous events and memories that have impact on a person or character. Using your favorite story (book, video game, movie, folktale, etc.), demonstrate how the events shape the character in both positive and negative ways. Focus one paragraph on the experiences and the reactions of the character, as well as the lesson and change that occurs as a result. Focus another paragraph on the story telling aspect of the piece you've chosen. What makes this a good story, in your opinion? Think about the way the story is told, the emotions involved, the tone or atmosphere of the tale, along with any other aspect that make it unique and memorable.

In this practice narrative I’m going to use a story from a game called “The Last of Us”. It starts out with the main character daughter and everything starts to become a disaster. The main character towards the end of the intro (SPOILER ALERT)…………….his daughter dies by an army guy. Now it’s 30 years in the future and the main character Joel is still depressed throughout the game of his daughter, but by the middle you have to escort girl name Elli and she starts to remind him of his daughter so she starts to get happier throughout the games by the tone of his voice. Joel has to go through all these obstacles to make sure Elli gets to her destination and possibly find the cure for the apocalypse. But, everything they been through they grew a bond like father and daughter bond so he became less depressed, every obstacle he goes through their relationship grows. As they get to their destination, Joel has to give up the life of Elli to save the human race from the apocalypse. But, Joel fights through trained army guys with better weapons than him yet he was able to save Elli and fight his way out the army camp and safe from them. That just shows you that he protects her like his own and won’t let anything happen to her. There’s that father daughter type relationship from the story.

For this topic on practice narrative I am going to relate to a game that I’m pretty sure everyone is aware of, if not than I don’t know what kind of person you are! Super Mario bros is a game in which the character’s being basically Mario, Luigi, and toad. Of course in this game the main character Mario goes through many experiences in the Mario world such as saving Peach from the antagonist Bowser. When in play the reactions of the character are just unexpected because you go through many levels and different obstacles that keep you from reaching the main antagonist. In other words the reactions would be surprised, mysterious, and overwhelming but at the same time the game is kind of fun. The lesson is in my opinion always fight to the very end because it’s true that to save someone, sometimes you have to overcome some difficult tasks and putting your life on the line.
What makes this a good story is it entertains you and makes you confront enemies or in other words as other people call it the bad guys. The story in this game of Mario also is a great example because you know that you are put up to the task to save someone no matter what. There are some emotions such as in the beginning depressed because the character Peach is taken away and greedy being Bowser. The game is well put out if you think hard about it. I think it’s a game that has some kind of value to it. As a matter of fact the last time I played this game was probably eight months ago and since than it has come back to me that this game has a great plot. In the end as we all know Peach does get saved and the world turns back to normal full of happiness and laughs.

The character I have chosen is john smith from the “I am number four series”. I chose this character because he goes through a lot of tough things to try and save his species from extinction. He has powers and is trying to save the 6 members of his kind left. He has to fight hoards of enemies to just kill all of them. His goal is to kill all of the mogoriens. He has special powers and he and the rest of his kind want to kill all of them.
John’s powers are speaking to animals, the power to summon and be immune to fire, and healing. John’s companions are six, nine, and seven, Sam, Sarah, and Mr. Goody. He will always try and save his friends. Through number 8 in the newest book was killed by five who turned against his kind. He knows this and with his friends escapes their base of operation and go on the run with a rebelling mogorien teamed up with them.

  4. My favorite book is Maze Runner. The character I chose is Thomas, the main character of the novel. Throughout the novel Tomas changes in many positive and negative ways. To begin, in the beginning of the novel Thomas is a soft kid and is kind. By the end of the novel he is a cold kid that will snap at you in a second. Secondly, throughout the book his senses improved. For example, while running the maze his memory improves and he becomes more alert. He grows tougher skin and doesn't react as much to the veteran gladers, mocking him or calling him Greenie (like freshman, or newbie). He also goes through the changing. This is when a person gets stung by a griever, which is an animal/machine thing, and the venom triggers flashbacks and glimpses of their past. After people go through the changing their personalities change and they become cold and don't want to talk about what they saw. But Thomas wasn't like that, although he didn't enjoy talking about it, he does to help them escape the maze.
In my opinion what makes a good story is the plot and description. The plot needs to be interesting and captivating. Meanwhile, the description needs to be intriguing and exceptional. Maze Runner has a wonderful plot to me. It has ups and downs and twists and turns. The tone of the story was informal and serious. The book was very deep and it showed Thomas’s thoughts and feelings. It made me feel an attachment to the character, when he was in danger I wanted to help him get out or fix his problems. This book was so memorable to me because it was full of problem solving and action. I enjoyed the action aspect of it. The fighting and running for their lives was fun to read. It also gave great descriptions of what the characters saw, smelled, touched, tasted, and heard. Lastly, I loved the story line. It was full of fighting and discovery which I enjoyed very much so.

((P.S. As I do not really know how to actually write this post, I will write it in my way, but in a way I hope you shall like.))

For years I have watched from afar at the growth of her. She will become a great ruler, I believe. She doesn't know me, or at least I don't think she does. I pray she does, though. But shame, she would never be interested with a lonesome landscaper as I. Especially not one as poor and drab as I. His brother is the lucky one. He inherited a mansion. What do I get? Maybe a new, bright red hat with an 'M' on it surrounded by white. Maybe.
But I have recently been told our dear princess has been captured. Taken away by a beast named Bowser. He has taken her away into a castle of sorts. I was told this from a friend of mine. A little mushroom man. He was in panic. He explained to me the whole situation. I just knew I had to go save her.
Now, call me an opportunist all you want, but I am going to get the love of this princess. I would do whatever it takes to save her and defeat this monster. This Beast.
So now I'm off, muttering my simple, Tourrettes induced
    "It's'a me, Mario!"

    1. Remember to add detail to the discussion of positive and negative changes undergone...describe the situations that make the character metamorphose into another personality. Also, for the second part of the response, address what makes the story of Mario so captivating to you - the story telling, the style, the humor, the conflict? What?

  6. Ren McCormack was a big city teen that moved to a small midwestern town of Bomont. His mother had just died of leukemia and he was going to live with his aunt, uncle, and little cousins. Through the experience of helping his mother in whatever way possible while she was sick, he matured and realized that even if you try your hardest to fight something, it may not turn out the way you want it to. Sometimes there are victories, such as getting the ban on dancing abolished, and sometimes there are failures, like his mothers death.
This is a very good movie in terms of story-telling. It is a good story because it shows the viewer what its like to have to struggle in order to get something you want. As the main conflict progresses there is almost music, dancing, romance and even a little action. Is it as good as the original? I would have to say no, but even without Kevin Bacon it still holds its own as a good story

  7. “Divergent” by Veronica Roth is the first book of the “Divergent” trilogy that is about a Utopia. The book is about how a future society had to change everything by separating into five factions with five different ways of thinking. The book is focused on the character Beatrice Prior from Abnegation who has to choose which faction she wants to be in but, first has to take an aptitude test. This is to see which of the five factions, Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent), she most belongs in. However, Beatrice learns from the test that she doesn’t exactly fit into one specific fraction which identifies her as Divergent. This is a very dangerous position to be in. She really doesn’t know what to do or think. Beatrice ends up joining the Dauntless thrill seekers, leaving her family behind. Throughout the book, Beatrice changes a lot. She changes her name to Tris and becomes confident and stronger (both physically and mentally). Tris has to deal with tough situations so that she can hide her Divergence. The lesson that she and the reader learn is that all societies are imperfect and have flaws. People thought that separating people would help the society but, a revolt was the result instead.
I think that “Divergent” is an excellent book. I thought it was interesting to see how the main character Beatrice evolved. She starts off as wishing she could be something more. In the end, Beatrice shows the real her, that she is a leader and it was interesting to discover that hidden quality and personality along with her as she tries to figure out who she really is. The suspenseful tone of the book made me relate to the characters. I could feel the struggle, the happiness, the frustration and sadness that Beatrice goes through. I could feel an adrenaline rush in so many parts such as when Beatrice zip lined from the top of a hundred story building. I felt a connection with the characters. I always was anxious to know what would happen next. I would read for hours just to find out. I couldn’t put the book down. I really did enjoy the book very much.

  8. One of the characters i pick who had changed dramatically throughout the book "The Secret Life of Bees" is Lily Owens. During the begining of the story, Lily has always been caged by her imperious father, T. Ray. Being frustrated, and eagered to run away from the abusiveness within the household, she finally decided to hit the road with one of T.Ray's african-american servant, Rosaleen. Along her way to find the un-known Black Mary who is represented in one of Lily's mother's picture, she finally found the Boatwright sisters of the Black Mary honey industry. Being with the Boatwright sisters, Lily then learns about racism, love, and community within her own indifferent world in South Carolina. Through her, we learn about strong women, such as August Boatwright and Rosaleen. Being a mother-less young female herself, she also finally believed in the Black Mary who is the mother of all African-American individuals. She then also discovered that her own mother had actually been through the same scenario of escaping T.Ray to seek for her truly content and freedom life before she pass away. Around the ending of the book, T.Ray then found out that Lily was hiding from him at the Boatwright sisters' house, where his wife has escaped to in the previous years. The dramatic change and climax is presented when Lily finally speaks out her mind and told T.Ray that she doesn't need him and that she is happy being with the strong Boatwright sisters. She was able to stand up for herself and be pround of her mother and her own self because she is able to end the hardened relationship between her and her father by telling him that she is stronger than the person he is.

The Secret Life of Bees is one of the good stories i read that is considered one of my favorites because this story covers the idea of being a strong, matured, and an independant woman. There were many emotions in the story arranging from fear, depression, and anger during the entre of the book. Along the story towards the end, there were many strong emotions that occurs within the learning process of the main characters. Many events happened such as the death of May Boatwright who committed suicide because she's too weak to live in a cruel world without her twin sister. Also, Lily's boyfriend Zack was also beaten up and is locked in a cell all because he is an African-American individual. In the end, the story reveals the relieveness of when Lily finally discovers who her mother was, and when Lily finally leaves T.Ray and told him that she will be fine without him and that he will be fine by himself too. The most content event in this story is when Lily realize that her real home where love is shown is to be with the Boatwright sisters. It is unique and signifant how the story was told along with the emotions within the conflict, to the climax, and then leads to relief in the story.

((P.S. I know I did mine different, and I don't believe there is a 'right way' to do this, but I shall still pride myself with saying mine is the best, yo))

  10. Beatrice Prior from Divergent
Divergent is a book based from the perspective of Beatrice Prior, a sixteen year old initiate into her faction. The first paragraph of the story contains an indigenous scene compared to our society today. The scene is of Beatrice Prior and her mother. Beatrice nicknamed Tris, is cynical of her mother catching her eye as she gauges herself in the mirror. Beatrice at the beginning of the book was a patient, genuine, loyal person. As shown in the first scene of the book Beatrice is looking at herself in the mirror but at the same time can’t decipher who she really is. Whether she is acknowledged of that or not, Beatrice in actuality is not seeing her true self in the mirror that first scene. She is seeing her outer shell, the person she is not destined to become. Plot twists come and go in this thrill ride of a novel and Tris changes. She comes face to face with murderers, trains, death. Beatrice is forced to change and is dubious whether it was for the better or for worse. In one foreboding scene Tris is faced with an abysmal decision, she has to decide whether to kill the person she is facing, or let the deviating possible outcomes circle in the air around her until one has finally dropped. In scenes like this Tris Prior may have had changed for the worse. Beatrice becomes stronger than ever through scenes that favor her for the better. Scenes like when she is faced with an enemy she becomes smarter with learning how to cope with decisions.
Divergent’s tone is astronomically generous to the states of ideas and uniqueness in its storytelling. Since Beatrice is the narrator the tone of divergent is fierce. Divergent includes scientific aspects which add to my confusion and enjoyment. What makes this story unique and memorable is the way the characters develop. Characters personalities grow and mature with the help of each other. Emotions and attitudes tend to splendor as friendships are contorted from thin air in this novel. Grim choices and decisions, misery and gratitude, all make this book a great read for me. The storyline is stupendous because the author Veronica Roth makes this novel a seamless example of reading in-between the lines. It is a complicated book, but the complexity, analytical and ornate emotions, and the devoted but fierce tone is what draws me in when I read the Divergent series.

The story I am choosing is the story of the scorpion and the turtle. In this story, a scorpion and a turtle are sitting on one side of a pond, and the scorpion asks the turtle if he can get a ride on his shell across the pond. The turtle responds saying "If I take you across the pond on my shell, you will sting me and we will drown. The scorpion tells him that he would never do anything like that and that they would both die, being that the turtle is gullible, he believes the scorpion and they make their way across the pond. About half way across, the scorpion stings the turtle, dooming them both, the turtle then asks why he would do such a thing, and the scorpion says, "It's in my nature." So the turtle and the scorpion both drown and die, now to me, I believe that the lesson here is to trust your gut and be cautious with what you do. I think this because the turtle did tell the scorpion that he knew he would sting him on the way and kill him, but he ignored his instincts and got killed.

To me, I think that the lesson in the story makes it really good, trusting your instincts and all. This is probably a very important life lesson and can be used for many different situations. Also, it teaches the how some people may be deceitful and lie to you just to get what they want, and to me that is also something you can use in life, not to lie, but to be careful with who you trust. I've been in many scenarios where someone told me something and then totally lied to me and did things that really got under my skin. But I most definitely learned from that mistake and never trusted that person again, and never made the same mistake with another person.

  12. In the book, “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen, Brian is the main protagonist in the story. His parents were recently divorced and now live separately. However, Brian still has to live with them, moving to one place to another. In the beginning of the story, Brian is going to Canada via airplane to live with his dad for the summer. But while on board the plane, the only pilot on board gets a heart attack and dies. The plane then crashes into the Canadian wilderness and Brian has to try to survive with nothing but his windbreaker and hatchet. Throughout the story he will go through many obstacles, but in the end become a wilderness expert. For example, during the middle of the book, Brian realizes that he will have to learn to create a fire in order to feed himself. Through many trial and errors, he’ll eventually accomplish his goal. Furthermore, he will have to face a tornado that he approaches head on. This experience literally toughened him up. Through his bravery and recklessness, he was to overcome the forces of nature.
I believe this story is good because the plot was very enticing. The beginning was definitely grabbing the reader’s attention, talking about the “Secret” that Brian knew. The detail was also very vivid, though that’s expected in an award-winning novel. Regardless, the book was very well written and you could tell that the author had done his research. Well, either that he went through the same experience. Either way, the book had many enthralling events that left the reader wanting to read more. Overall, Hatchet is probably one of my favorite books of all time.

    Period 9

My favorite story was from the book “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. In one situation the main character, Pip, waits for his love, Estella, and through many of years of waiting. This helps him in a positive way. He finally gets the love that he desired. In another situation in the story, Pip ends up being in debt. This affects him in a negative way. His change into adulthood hasn’t been all that good for him.

The thing that makes me enjoy this story is the writing style that Charles Dickens uses, and the general plot. It uses this type of old-fashioned style. You hardly ever see anybody write like that nowadays, so its cool to see it when it does appear. The plot is also a very interesting part of the novel. It keeps you at the edge of your seat, especially the end of the story. All that action and description makes this story a classic by Charles Dickens.

The movie that I have chosen is " The hunger games" directed by Gary Ross. The character that I have chosen is Katniss Everdeen. Katniss Everdeen had to face many struggles throughout the movie. For example, she had to try and survive so she could win the prize to help her family. The lessons that Katniss learned was that you have fight to win. Katniss was a person who tried to form with other people but she had to learn not to trust other people when being in a life or death betel, because they can turn their back on you. Katniss is fighting to make her family have more money, and to have good food and a roof over their heads, so she faces many challenges to try to make that happen.

This movie helped me understand the importance of staying strong. This movie was a good movie in my onion because it was very visual so I got to stay active and informed of what's going on. What makes this movie a good movie is that there is a lot of plot twists, and there is a lot of action. For example, there is a lot of fighting so therefore there is action. There is also a lot of movie around. This is what makes " The hunger games" such a good movie.

  15.            The books I choose is the series of the Harry Potter books. This is because Harry Potter has had many experienced many things. One that changed him is that his parents were killed by the villain and the bad guy wanted to kill Harry. So when he survived it was a miracle. However from surviving that he gained some pros like being known as the only person to survive. However some cons too like being an individual.             Therefore what makes this story good is the story line about what happened. Being known as the guy who was suppose to die isn't the best name. Also there are people that are jealous of him so those people tried to make his life miserable. But also he made many friends who had his back no matter what they had to do. they hope to see through the bad and the good. These are some of the reasons why I think the story is good to read.

  16. My favorite movie is Lilo and Stitch. Stitch starts off by falling into Hawaii. He gets run over by a car and put in an animal shelter. That’s where he pretends to be a dog and meets Lilo. Stitch was originally made to destroy and to cause disasters. But Lilo showed him how to love and be loved. She adopted him and slowly tried to teach him to be good. He destroyed a lot of things in the process, but re-shaped his life for the better. Basically, the lesson this movie tells you two things. 1. Anything bad, can learn to be good. 2. Learn to love and be loved. In the end, Stitch is loved, in a family, and becomes good.
In my opinion, what makes this a good story is the fact that it shows that things can change for the better. What made the story memorable was how it was put together and how they displayed the emotions. When emotions were pulled out, you felt that way too. In my opinion, it was very captivating.

I chose Ally from the Notebook. How the events shape her in a positive way is that when she was a teenager at the age of seventeen a boy named Noah fell in love with her and she fell in love with him but they were bound to be together although they cared for each other and they eventually got married and now Noah is telling her the story of their life because she doesn’t remember because she has altimers. When ever she remembers the story she says that it was them, her and Noah. She knows how much he loves her that he reads to her every day to help her remember. How the events shape her in a negative way is that there is a short time period where she remembers the story and then she goes back to “who are you, why are you kissing and hugging me.” Which is heartbreaking because Noah loves her and its hard for him to go through having her forget and remember day after day. The lesson that Ally learns and change that occurs as a result is that she knows in her heart that Noah loves her no matter what even if she forgets all of a sudden of why Noah was kissing her or hugging her.
The story telling aspect of the piece I’ve chosen is that it’s telling the story of love and love will go on forever when you truly love someone and no one can really take that away. So when Noah and Ally are together nothing change their love for each other, especially Noah’s because even if he knows that Ally will never again remember what happened when they were younger doesn’t change his love for her. What makes this story good, in my opinion is that no how much you love someone you’ll always love them no matter what they do or what changes them, in this case Ally having altimers and Noah still loves her even though he knows that she’ll never actually remember the life she had.

Out of all the numerous stories, fairy tales, novels, and short stories that I have read, my favorite of all time was the book that I decided to read of this previously now ending summer. The name of the book “Crank: by Ellen Hopkins. The protagonists of the story is a junior student in High School named Kristina. Kristina is a straight A honor roll student, and lives in a house with her mother, step-father, bother, and her sister. Even though Kristina’s mother is too busy in her relationship with her step father to really pay attention her, she does have expectations, and rules and limits that she expects Kristina to somehow meet. Kristina’s younger brother and her old sister have two different points of views, and Kristina doesn’t feel comfortable approaching thing for many things. So when the summer comes, Kristina decides to go visit her father, who is a drug abuser, and an addict, her whole life takes a sharp turn. Kristina’s father has no problem with Kristina using drugs nor isn’t even worried about Kristina being involved with people who do use drugs. So when Kristina visits her father, she gets a boyfriend named Adam, and smokes Crystal Meth. With Adam, Adam’s second girlfriend, and her own father!! Ever since that one night Kristina develops an addiction to drugs, alcohol, and sexual activity. Through-out the whole story, Kristina fights these challenges with her two antagonist, drug abuse & sexual activity, and Bree. Bree is the name that Kristina gives herself whenever she smoking or involved in sexual activity. But Bree is no lather ego, or a imaginary friend. Kristina is who she was forced to be, but Bree is who she chooses to be when out of her mother’s control. When Kristina goes back home, Bree’s urge to smoke and do what is wrong is just too strong for Kristina to battle with, and Bree continues to do drugs. It’s not till she is rapped by her drug dealer/ boyfriend named Brendan. It’s this moment in the book where Kristina’s later on realizes that she pregnant. Right as Kristina is about to get an abortion, she feels the child kick her inside of her stomach. She immediately feels a bond, and strong passion for her child, and decides to raise the child. She ends up finding out that she is going to have a boy. Knowing she is going to have a child, she goes through rehab to get dig herself out of the hole she dug herself into. At the end, she doesn’t completely stop using drugs, but she doesn’t use them as often, and tries to get clean. It’s important to know the ending of the story in this particular story because it shows you how Kristina had a battle within herself and Bree, and she overpowered Bree. Even though she came out with a lot huge mistakes she that is too late to fix now, she can start plotting for the future, and for better days that are ahead of her. Not just that, but also at the end of the story Kristina learns many different lessons. She learns that when going through a tuff time, drugs are not the way to go to help cope with personal issues that you’re going through. She now knows that sometimes all it takes it only takes on mistake, to create a series of mistakes that harm you and destroy you in different areas. There were many lessons that Kristina learned. I won’t able to name all of them, but the main lesson that Kristina’s learned is that you need to stay away from

  19. drugs because they will turn you into something you are not, and destroy everything, and harm everyone around you.
I found “Crank” by Ellen Hopkins to be the most interesting story that I have read because of how it was told. Nothing was implied, if you wanted to understand the story you had to have the ability to read between the lines in order to understand. The whole book was actually told in a poem form, but was between 400-500 pages long. The fact that the story was written in a poem structure made it ten times more interesting. I found it more interesting that it was written in poem structure, because poems have more emotions, and I felt like when I was reading in between the lines, and reading Kristina’s & Bree’s thoughts, I could actually feel it. I could that aching pain in Kristina’s stomach when she was going through all the pain that the drugs were causing her. I can feel the undescribable and unrealistic fear that Kristina was feeling when she found out she was pregnant. I could only feel all the emotions that Kristina was feeling when she was going through all those different mood swings. Everything that she was going, I could actually feel, it just seemed so real. I feel poems are like pictures, they can say thousand words if you look at them closely and read between the lines. Not just that but poems tend to get right to the point, they get right to the action, unlike if your reading a novel, and you have to wait for the action to slowly arise, the actions or drama in poems start right away and are very clear. The story also had a lot of drama, and shocking twist that made it more interesting for me read. It was just amazing how this story had a huge combination of different techniques that held my interest. I truly believe that this book was just written for me in particular.

    Understanding Writing

The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening is one of my favorite games and I’m one of the weird people who play some games for the story. This has even taught me some things so I thought that it would be a great narrative to write about.

The story starts off with the main protagonist Link, who is out at sea and in the blink of an eye a storm destroys his boat and washes him to shore. He is found by a young lady named Marin where she takes him to her house until he awakens. He goes back to where he washed ashore to get his sword where an owl flies in and tells him if he wants to escape the island he must first wake the Wind Fish, the “guardian” of the island. The owl tells him the only way he can awaken the Wind Fish is with the eight Instruments of the Sirens. The “protectors” of each instrument call themselves “nightmares” and it is unknown why until Link goes to retrieve the sixth instrument. In the ancient ruins Link finds out that the world of that island called “Koholint” is nothing but a dream created by the Wind Fish. After the final Nightmare is defeated the Wind Fish tells Link that Koholint Island isn’t the dream of the Wind Fish but Link himself. After Link plays the Ballad of the Wind Fish, he and the Wind Fish awaken; Koholint Island and all of its inhabitants slowly disappear. Link then awakens in the sea while holding on to whatever is left of his boat.

The main protagonist Link has already found a friend in Marin only a few seconds after he wakes up. She is the main person on the island who can pull emotions from him. “Link, someday you will leave this island…I just know in my heart……Don’t ever forget me…If you do, I’ll never forgive you!” this quote by Marin shows just how much of a connection she has made with Link in the short time in Koholint. They have created a bond to the point where Marin tells him that she wishes that she was a seagull so she could explore the vast world. The only emotion shown by Link is mostly confusion. When he asks the children playing in the village when they came to the island, they were confused. This island paradise lies beyond time and the children’s minds can’t grasp the concept of “when.” The island will stay the same forever, but Link and Marin don’t. A great feeling to escape from the dream world is present, escape to a world where “when” exists. The only sense of happiness is after Link wakens from his dream.

(Easter Egg) (If the game is beaten without Link dying once, Marin gets her wish and turns into a seagull after Link wakes up and is able to explore the world just as she wanted.)

  21. Over the summer I read a novel called Gym Candy by Carl Dueker. This was a story about a teenage boy named Mick Johnson who was struggling with high school and his favorite sport, football. Mick was a freshman that was struggling with bullying and drug introduction. He had to get stronger to maintain the best spot on his football team. His first thought was to keep working hard and his deserved results would come. Although, that never happened Mick became frustrated and turned to the only thing that would give him fast results; steroids. Taking the steroids obviously gave him strength, but it came with side effects. As a result Mick obtained breasts and harsh acne along with bi-polar disorder. He had to hide the effects from both his friends and his family which left him emotionally troubled. Mick and the readers learned that one has to work hard to get to the point they can reach and that its okay if someone is better than you at something.
This story was brilliantly told and dissected by Mick’s point of view. The novel had numerous conflicts such as bullying, deceit, drug abuse, and the main characters self conflict. At the end of the story some of these conflicts still remained. The main character never got over the bullying problem or overcame his self conflict. Mick is in a long lasting rage and an even longer depression before and during his use of steroids and I think the author really brought that to life. Also, the story was told by Mick’s point of view so we could understand his different emotions and what he thought about different things and people. In most stories there is one major problem in the story that is overcome at the end. Although, in this story there are multiple problems and not all are solved by the time the story is over.

  22. When I was a little kid I played this video game .The character went to through a rough life and he wasn't a well person to be Around. He will always be stubborn and always cause fights. There was one thing that changes all his life around. When this guy came up to him and took him to the future. He showed him how his future will turn out if he keeps being stubborn and rude to people. there was a lot of negative things going on his future life. When got back to the present time the guy who was stubborn changed and started to be well mannered and a caring person. He didn't even start fights because he knew something bad will happen.

This impact me because this can happen to anybody. It may help many other people. It taught me that if your a bad person our future might turn out

The story I have chosen is about an air bender named Aang from the animated show Avatar the Last Air bender. This show had 3 seasons in which the main character Aang changes immensely. The story is set in a world where there are four nations that can bend different element; water, fire, earth and air. In the story the fire nation had killed all the air benders, except Aang, who is the avatar (the one person who can bend all for elements), and wants to rule all of the other nations. Aang is awoken by a water bender named Katara and her brother Sokka. He had been frozen in ice before the war began and was awoken in the middle of it. At first he is naive and childish. He fools around a lot and only cares about having fun. By the end of the third season he is a strong confident person who is capable, knowledgeable, and dependable. He changes to become these through several events through the seasons. The first event that changes him his when he goes to his home. At his home (the Northern Air Temple) he sees all of the bones of his dead family and friends. This is what first makes him realize that there is a war and that he needs to become strong enough to defeat the leader of the Fire Nation, The Firelord. After Aang sees his destroyed home he realizes the severity of the war and the evil of the Fire Nation and knows he has to defeat them. Another main event that changes him is when he realizes he is being hunted by the banished Fire Nation Prince. When he first discovers this, he realizes how important he is and that people are out to get him, so he must train to defend himself. Another event is when he learns there is a Comet that will enhance the Fire benders power tenfold. This is when he learns that he has to master all four elements to defeat the Firelord before the comet arrives at the end of the year. This is when he becomes most motivated and pushed to get stronger and learns to be more confident and focused. The last major event is when he versus the Firelord while the Firelord is stronger because of the comet. This experience shows him that he is strong. He is able to call upon his strength and defeat the Firelord. He becomes much more confident and everyone in the world recognizes him. He even manages to not kill the Firelord and still defeat him, maintaining his resolved and kind personality. The fights he took part in and the emotional tolls he had to deal with all transformed him from a naive child into a powerful leader who is a hero with a pure heart.

    1. As the series go on, the plot and story never ceases to be intriguing and every episode engulfed me. Even after 5 years of the last episodes release, I still watch the episodes for the tenth to twentieth time. To me an interesting story must have a plot that you don’t expect, where there are always curveballs given you a splendid surprise. Stories need to be intriguing and have you at the edge of your seat and waiting desperately for the nest chapter/episode/scene. The concept of the story for me also plays an important role. If the concept is over –used, cliché, or boring then I won’t enjoy it. The stories with original concepts and unheard of ideas are the best ones, and when the topic is something that you can relate to and enjoy, it’s just an incredible experience. The story of Avatar the Last Airbender is all of these. Although the idea of the elements is not new, the way the writers took the concept by making people able to control them and certain element users wanting to dominant the other elements is so cool. It shows an intriguing tale of one young boy awoken in the middle of a war, with the burden of his dead family and friends and everyone in the world, with his three friends traveling the world for him to learn all four elements to beat the Firelord and stop the Fire Nation from taking over. The three and eventually four main characters are all unique and interesting. During all 3 seasons each one has different personality and emotional changes that envelop you into their world and lives, holding you there until the end of the series. The emotions of the story are varied and it’s not a plain and unoriginal, I’m happy you’re happy, we’re all happy, story, it shows all sides of our life, portrayed in their world. It displays guilt, envy, frustration, love, sorrow, humor (especially humor, joy, etc. The story is so varied and diverse and the plot so creative and entertaining, that it is an almost impossible show to dislike. It is still the best show on TV, in my opinion, around.

One of my favorite books was “The Great Gatsby.” Out of all the characters in the novel, my most favorites were Jay Gatsby. Who are one of the two main characters in the book. Through out the novel Jay has many changes and realistic that he must understand. At the beginning he is very shy I could say, and proud of all his accomplishments, but feel as if his heart is yet not so content. Then by the end, he is still lost in the clouds of hope, and wishes he could still love and be with Daisy Buchanan, even though she is already married. But despite him having such a tough life and achieving all he has by navigating the crowd and telling bunch of lies he is glad to end up where he is now. But he begins to understand what a friendship is, and learns that life can’t just be full of desperation and chasing for a dream, and that you need friends in your life to make you happy. He starts off crazy for love, and dies for Daisy’s love. Gatsby though begins to gain a friend named Nick Carraway who helps Gatsby feel comforting on telling his story to him
This is in my opinion is a very good plot. It shows mysteries and wants to keep the reader wondering the mystical and astonishing life that Gatsby has. For example when he is with Nick explain “God’s truth” about Gatsby, all he tells are lies that he went to Oxford, was a child of very wealthy parents who are all dead now. The only truth was that he ends up becoming a major in the war and achieves a title for it. This goes on for about half of the book, until finally the author intrudes us why Gatsby became so successful and why he did it. It was pretty much a love story, all was done so he could end up happy with Daisy, the house, his success, where he lives, all of it was in the intention for Daisy. I really enjoyed it though, the aspect was unique, the writing was beautiful, and it made the story so remarkably intelligent to read. The way each phrase was worded to explain the life of Gatsby was magnificent and was a well made plot, a love and mysterious plot.

    1. I agree - Gatsby continues to be one of the most compelling characters for me: he's a rebel, a romantic, and a complete mystery. He is completely untrustworthy but manages to retain his charm nonetheless. One of the most tragic elements of the novel is the realization that Gatsby was doomed from the end - his romantic aspirations do not fit into an entirely materialistic society of the 1920s. But you still cheer for him.

  25. In the book “The Hunger Games” Peeta has been chosen by Effie Trinket from the Capitol to be entered into the Hunger Games. Unfortunately, no one volunteered to take his place. Peeta comes from District Twelve where the food and money is low. Peeta is the son of bakery owners and works in the bakery along with his parents. Peeta, once he is chosen, goes onto this train which is filled to the brim with extravagant food and furniture which he is not used to seeing. When he gets onto the train he meets Haymitch who is his mentor for the Hunger Games. Peeta is shocked and stunned at all the elements that were around him. Peeta had days of training before entering into the games and he thought that he had no chance of winning, however, he did think that Katniss, the girl chosen from District Twelve, would win. Upon entering the arena where the games would be played, Peeta became friends with the “career” tributes to keep Katniss safe because Peeta has had a crush on Katniss for a very long time. Although Peeta almost dies due to a stab wound, Katniss nurses him back to health and they both end up winning the games after defying the Capitol and got to go home to their families.

The Hunger Games is a very descriptive and well written book. I enjoyed this book very much. The Hunger Games caught my attention from the minute I opened the book and started reading. The Hunger Games is an action packed book and I would recommend that everyone should read it.

  26. My practice narrative is my favorite scary movie so far "Sinister." True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves himself and his family into a house where a horrific crime took place earlier in time. Although his family doesn't know. He is trying to find out more about the crime so he can write a new book about it to help his failing career. He uses some Super 8 film footage he finds in the house to help in his research, but he soon finds more than he expected. There is a figure in each of the films, which nobody knows who or what it is yet. As a result, his family start to suffer, as does he, and things take a turn for the worse. The film mainly opens with one of the Super 8 footage showing a family of four standing beneath a tree with hoods over their heads and and ropes around their necks. An unidentified and non shown figure saws through a branch which has the ends of the rope tied to, lifts them up, causing them all to be strangled to death. Months later, came a true crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves into the murdered family's home with his wife, Tracy, and their two children Ashley a gifted artist who is allowed to paint only on the walls in her bedroom, and Trevor, who begins re-experiencing bizarre night terrors from moving into the home. Only Ellison is knows that the house they moved into was the crime scene of an earlier murder. Ellison wants to use the murders as the new topics of his new book, and hopes that his research will help find the family's fifth member, a little girl named Stephanie who disappeared following the recent murder. Ellison finds a mysterious box in the attic, which contained a projector and several reels of Standard 8 mm footage that were each labeled which seemed to be innocent home movies. he then takes the box to his office room, since he works at home, to watching the films. Ellison discovers that they are Super 8 movies showing families being murdered in various ways. Including having their throats slit in the family's beds (Sleepy Time 1998). Being burnt to death in the family's car (BBQ 1979). Being drowned in the family's backyard pool (Pool Party 1966). Being run over by a lawn mower (Lawn Work 1986). then finally, the family being hanged by a tree, the same footage that opened the movie (Family Hanging Out 2011). After watching the film "Pool Party 1966", Ellison notices a demonic figure watching the drownings from the bottom of the pool before turning to look directly at Elison through the camera. Ellison eventually finds the figure observing the murders in each of the films, along with a strange painted symbol. After inspecting the lid of the box containing the films, Ellison discovers numerous crude childlike drawings showing the murders, along with crude drawings of the demonic figure, identified as "Mr. Boogie." Ellison then discovers that the murders in the films took place at different times, beginning in the 1960s, and in different cities across the country. He also learns that the families were all drugged before being killed; and that a child from each family went missing following every murder. Jonas ( whose expertise is the occult and demonic phenomena) tells Ellison that the symbols are that of a pagan deity named Bughuul, who would kill entire families so that he could take their children into his realm and consume their souls. One night, Ellison hears the film projector on, which makes him very curious about what id going on, so he goes up to the attic.

    1. . There, he finds the missing children from each murder, in different stages of decay. They are watching one of the films. "Mr. Boogie", suddenly appears on camera, then physically appearing right in front of Ellison's face. Ellison takes the camera and the films to the backyard and burns them. Then he wakes his family to tell them that they are moving back to their old house. Which was a bad idea they had not known coming. Once his family and him arrive at their old home, Ellison receives a message from Professor Jonas. Jonas sends him scans of historical drawings having to do with "Mr. Boogie"; each had been partially destroyed because ancient cultures believed that Bughuul lived within the images, and that they acted as portals between his realm and the mortal world. Ellison then discovers the projector and films in the attic of his old home, along with a new envelope of film labeled "extended endings." Elison then discovered a link between each of the murders. Every family had previously lived in the house where the last murder took place, and each new murder occurred shortly after the family moved into their new homes by moving. Ellison realized that he has placed himself and his family in line to be the next victims. Ellison then watches the footage. He finds that it showed the missing children coming onscreen following each murder, revealing themselves to be the killers before suddenly disappearing. Before he can react, Ellison becomes light-headed; looking at his coffee cup, he finds a note reading "Good Night Daddy" which he had received from his daughter, and tehn sees a green liquid inside the cup before losing consciousness. Ellison wakes up to find himself, his wife and his son drugged and tied up. Ashley approaches holding the 8 mm camera, and promises to Elison that she will make him famous again. Ashley then continues by murdering her family with an axe, chopping off their heads, arms, and their legs. Then Ashley uses their blood to paint images of cats, dogs, and unicorns on the walls of their house. Her works complete. Ashley views the Super-8 film of her murders, which concludes with an image of the missing children watching her. Bughuul then appears behind Ashley with green blood covering his hands, which causes the children to flee. He then lifts up Ashley into his arms and disappears into the film with her.
There are many various reasons why I chose to talk about the film, "Sinister." For instance, i it my favorite scary movie so far. Although it was not intensely scary for me, i still loved the plot and the characters in this movie. "Sinister", was suspenseful, a thriller, a horror, and mysterious. All the actors do a great job, Elison was solid. The directing and editing of the film was slick with interesting angles and shots. The imagery was great and so were the jumpy moments. This movie did make me scream, I have to admit it. The plot was simple and followed the true-crime writer Ellison (Ethan Hawke) as he discovers a box of home movies "found footage" of murders that put his family in danger/to death. Some people may dislike the believably of the films central ethos for the evil protagonist. However I enjoyed the original mythology created, it added something new to the table.

  28. In Anne Frank, she changes, and goes through many ruff actions through the story; it was the period of the Holocaust and her family was Jewish. When Anne Frank had to go into hiding she had to go with many other people. In the beginning of the story her father gets her a diary, and she begins to write what's happening. Towards the start of the story Anne didn't really understand why they were going into hiding, but then she realizes why they are. She felt hurt, and confused; but she understood why. Throughout the story Anne started to become more wiser, and more intelligent. She wrote everyday in the journal. Anne starts to see her life becoming a bore, and wanting to just get out. She started to say that its “stupid” to keep on hiding, and she just became very aggravated. Once they got caught she was actually very pleased. She didn’t really pay attention to getting caught; she remembered how it felt to be free and out. The lesson is to not take things for granted because many don't get the same rights as we do, and we should appreciate it.
The story of Anne Frank in my opinion is amazing. I think its amazing for many reasons. Firstly, the story of her life in hiding is a realistic, and very true story. There are many written books about it, but they all are still based on her own diary entries about what is going on. In addition, the story was very nerve racking but yet had many other genres in the story as well and I liked that. The story gave me goosebumps when the Nazi’s came into check the office. Another reason why I like the story is because it was different from any other story I’ve read. To be honest I don't really like non-fiction books, but this one I enjoyed. I took a different perspective on it, and related to life today. She was only my age when that was happening to her, and I don't know what I would have done.

He tried to protect his teammates from people who try to kill them and he tries to protect his country from people who are a harm too it. The negative is it has killing put if its to protect his country then its necessary. The main character helps his teammates through everything and try to win the game.
The negative makes the game gore and killing but in life if that army is trying to protect there country, they have to give there life for the country so in the game it makes sense to die to protect your country.

Now I kind of get an idea of how it works. Another thing that is positive is that helping each other out in the game.

  31. In the realm of Sci-Fi, there has been one series that changed the genre forever, Star Wars. I won’t even talk about the prequels, but as a nod to the upcoming release of Episode 7, one unforgettable character of the series was Darth Vader. As the Emperor’s right hand man, Vader had many tasks and responsibilities that undoubtedly changed him as a human. Vader became the mostly machine person he was out of love, in an attempt to save his wife Padme from a death he foresaw, he turned to serve the Dark Side, betraying his Jedi allies. Doing so, he murdered countless Jedi, including the younglings. After the fall of the Jedi order,Vader set about restoring Galactic “peace”, through aggressive diplomacy. This meaning taking over planets through the use of military might. These campaigns turned Vader more and more into a heartless, self serving killer. However, when Vader confronts his son, Luke, he begins to change. Through the selfless actions of Luke, Vader begin to wonder what someone could possibly gain in doing this, rather than take the power the Dark Side offered. Then, in Luke’s seemingly hopeless battle against the Emperor, Vader steps in, and kills the Galactic ruler, saving his son.
What I like about the Star Wars story so much is the heroism involved. In the battle between the Jedi and Sith, it is very evident that the evil Sith are far more powerful. One of the clearest examples of this is the battle of Hoth. The Empire’s storm troopers are invading the Rebel base, and they send in their massive At-At’s . In a hopeless attempt to cover their escape, brave pilots are sent out in dwarfed snowspeeders. Despite that, the Jed and Rebels are still able to reclaim the galaxy, and defeat the Sith.

  32. My favorite story is The Beast by Walter Dean Meyers. The main character is Anthony Witherspoon. Anthony is from Harlem and he goes off to private school in upstate New York. When he returns he finds that his girlfriend is using drugs. Throughout the story Anthony struggles to try to help his girlfriend get off drugs. He learns that life is short and that life can change at any moment for the good or for the bad.
This story in my opinion was a good story. I liked how it used real life struggles and real situations that can happen to anyone. The author also expressed the characters emotions and there continuous struggles in the fight against drugs and gang violence. The author also captures the readers with his figurative language and endless detail. Also there is no other story like it.

  33. An interesting story that has events that shape a person into who they are now is about my mom. Growing up, she grew up poor and was supported well by her guardians. She clean and worked at a young age and didn't everything she needed. She grew up with her Dad and two sisters; one older and one younger than her. The older sister, Laura wasn't mother figure towards my mom like my mom was towards her little sister, Sandra, since their mom didn't live with them. My mom would buy her clothes, food, or important things she needed. I found that like a very caring thing to do without having complete support from her father. Since my mom w living without depending on anyone else, she became independent. Now as a single mom and having two children while working two jobs, she is probably one of the most hard-working mothers. She is there for my brother and I for everything and when it comes to last minute emergencies she will be there. She tells me she tries to be the parent her parents were not.In this case, her experience of not having the best parents caused her to be a very supportive parent.
This story to me is unique because it's a major reason why my mom is the parent she is. I wonder what could've happened if she hadn't been through that tough experience! If that didn't happen to her, she might've not been the awesome mom she is. It is upsetting to hear that she didn't grow up with a better childhood, but it formed her into a great and strong woman she is today. This wasn't an actual story in a book or movie but this story will mean something to me. This is a personal story that is more special than any other due to the results of my mom's personality and attitude. It's unique because that one thing could'be changed my life! There would've been so many more outcomes that may have changed my life. That's where I could be grateful that everything happens for a reason, whether it being good or bad.

The character i choose is from the video game Grand Theft Auto V. From GTA V I choose the character micheal. Micheal has a lot of up and downs in the story. He goes from family man in the day to professional bank robber at night. Micheal will protect his family at any costs even the murder of one of his best friends. And the abondoning of another (Trevor). Michael has robbed banks and sent his friends under the bus but still he is a good family man and very protective of his family. If you choose to do one thing in the story Michael completely betrays his best friend and actually helps another character (Franklin) murder him.
I feel that Michael has a good story for multiple reasons. For one his lows are very low and his highs are somewhat high. So I think he knocks this assignment right on the head. I like Michael, but he does have His lows. Michael is very interesting and this is obvious because so many people have got to know the story and know it well. And the people that made Michael professional making characters and are very good at what they do.

  35. For this Blog I chose a game called, “The Last of Us.” In this game the main character is named Joel. The game is based on survival and the object your supposed to survive from is being infected. The infected is a group of humans that get a disease and the disease takes over your body. In the beginning of the game Joel and his daughter are together in their house. The daughter eventually falls asleep and her uncle calls her. Then the fathers shoots an infected in front of her and they have to drive away from the infected city. They eventually get in a car crash and they have to run in order to survive the horde of infected. A few minutes after running a distance they have to confront a guard also know as a soldier in the game. The soldier shoots the infected that are following Joel and his daughter. The soldier then points at the daughter and says he has to kill her. Th reason he has to shoot her is because he saw that Joel was carrying her. He thought she was infected so he shots her and then she dies in front of Joel. Joel then cries in opening of the game.
I think this game has a great way of surprising you. It surprised me in the beginning and made feel sympathetic. It was like I was in Joel's shoes. It has a great way of surprising me and caught me a few times when I was unaware. Through the game he tries not to remember but every time he tries not to someone has to bring her up. He gets mad and also sad when he remembers her. The game has a excellent sequence the way the character acts makes you feel his pain. This game makes you feel like your in it. This is why I chose this game.

  36. In the book "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Steig Larson, the main character Lisbeth Salander has experienced a lot in her life. Her character demonstrates both positive and negative reactions in many ways. Of all the bad that she has encountered throughout her life, she has a hard time trusting people. And it’s because of this that people can’t get close to her. Also Lisbeth is very defensive towards herself, even though she is small and be skinny.
This book in my opinion is awesome for the fact that I can to it a lot. Also for the fact that it contains suspense, some comedy, violence. And because I love Steigs style of writing.
