Blog 19: What Influences You (in Pop Culture)?

Due Friday March 14th, 2014

Young people are highly influenced by popular culture. They attempt to define themselves on the basis of what they see on television, in newspapers and magazines, and in the movies. In fact, young people accept the values of popular culture as their own, believing that those values are central to their personal development and social acceptance.
Assignment: What elements of popular culture (movies, books, music, trends, fashion, television, technology, games, behaviors, etc) influence your identity? What have you borrowed (and from what source) to construct your attitude toward life and your personality? Explain what cultural trends do you reject? Give specific titles, details, explanations to receive full credit.
A minimum of 2 paragraphs for this topic is required ,with at least a 2-3 sentence response to another person's blog post--building upon it, disagreeing with it, or re-thinking it.

Society now a day is very influenced by popular culture and social media. This is because it gives kids and teenagers a way to make friends and to fit into the community and groups. For example now there is such a word that describes how “good” you’re dressed called swag. I personally see many students that dress with “swag” and since about 7th grade it has been trending and adolescents still dress to that way. In the other hand, there are the hipsters who dress the complete opposite and do what is not popular and not trending. Then lastly there is class. Although kids my age don’t know much about dressing with class, or should even dress up with class since we are only in high school, but is a dressing a way I look forward to when I’m out of high school.
Furthermore, the popular culture that is trending in today’s society and along what is roaming in social media has influenced me to dress and do things. For example, the so-called dressing with swag has influenced me a little bit to adapt to some ways of the dress style but not so much. But sometimes I don’t even pay any acknowledgement that I dress a certain way. If I like something then I do it or wear it. For example in soccer, the team FC Barcelona is followed by so many but yet I don’t see many loyal fans to the soccer team, they just support it when they win since they have Lionel Messi. Me in the other hand follow the team Manchester United and although it is not doing so well, I support them even through the toughest times, unlike Barcelona fans.
In addition, even the type of technology that everyone uses has influenced me to use. For example the iPhone, about two years ago I got my first iPhone and I stuck to it since it was trending at the time and still is. Moreover, the website called YouTube has always that one channel that has the most subscribers and everyone knows. Only about last year did I find out about a man named Pewdiepie, who was brought to my attention through many of my friends that watch him, but whom I find very hilarious and enjoy watching his videos, even though it is a gaming channel. All in all, yes I have borrowed and followed the trends in today’s society, not because I needed too, but because some of them actually appealed to me.

    1. Though I do somewhat agree with what you are saying, I would just like to point out that hipsters are popular and trending, unlike what you have said. Like the people wear the Misfits shirts. They have no idea what or who the Misfits were (They are not around anymore, and the 'new' ones are terrible), and they don't even know the REAL Misfits, a band they probably NEVER heard a song from before. That is all.

    2. I completely agree with your thoughts about how we should enjoy the trends that we follow because we like them and not because it’s what everyone is doing which is what several people do. We should be leaders and not followers. I also liked you reference to Pewdiepie.

    3. I love being introduced to new things by my friends -- I feel that they know me the best, so I trust their opinions more than the "trends," except my friend Ryan, who told me to watch "Breaking Bad"; it was terrible.

  2. It comes as no surprise that people are, of course, influenced by the pop culture that is around them. As a result, we find people wearing clothes just like people on TV, we see people who talk just like people on TV, and we see people act like people on TV. This, in my opinion, is not a good thing, but that's besides the point. The point is whether or not I allow myself to fall into this trend of terrible pop culture.
The fact is, and whether or not I would like to admit it, I do borrow some from pop culture. I do not borrow music choice, and only very minimally clothing, like Nike sweatshirts that get stolen (RIP, my dear friend), but I do borrow some of my speaking habits. Like how I say things like “lel no sweg top kek”. It is not necessarily pop culture (From 4Chan), but it is still there.
There is so much from this pop culture trend that I hate. The music that talks about sex and drugs, the skimpy outfits girls wear, the stuck up stars that ‘Cry to their own lyrics that they don’t even write’ when the lyrics are ‘Rude Boy’, and I hate the way people think. Really, I feel socially backward because I feel as though I think with logic. But then again, it’s all relative from person to person. I just hate it how people think they are so underprivileged. Oh, and Hipsters, don’t get me started! You’re not ‘Hip’! You’re not cool! You are doing what everyone else does but say it’s not! And Emo Band Fan girls, Jesus! Your bands didn't save your life! They are telling you TO KILL YOURSELF in the songs!
Oh, uh, sorry. I get a little engrossed in these types of arguments. But I think you can get the picture.

    1. Now that i look at the so called hipsters in the point of a view you showed, I see what you mean, but i somewhat disagree since i feel like they do sometimes do the opposite of what is trending. But Emo band fan girls, I've never seen one who actually says that their band actually saved their life, so i wouldn't know.

      Delete
    2. I also can't stand hipsters, are they even hipsters anymore? It seems that being a hipster is the new trend and maybe wearing Nike or hollister is the new hipster. I also try not to let pop culture influence me but its kind of difficult because we are surrounded by it and the mass waves of mainstream people.

      Delete
    3. I totally diagree with what you said. Its not only emo girls who fan girl over boybands.A lot of people do. I know people who have had their lives saved by bands and singers. So you cant say that they dont help you. Not one song tells you to kill yourself. So you cant speak for everyone because people have had their lives saved, just because you didnt doesnt mean eople dont......

      Delete
    4. Interesting points of view: I would ask Michael to give an example of the band that supposedly tell girls to kill themselves, since that seems to be a point of contention. Also, what would you all define as "hipster"? I feel that my definition and yours might be different. What Alex said is poignant -- if enough people attempt to do "what is perceived as not popular," does that make it a trend? I think it depends on the area...maybe.

  3. Pop culture is the way life. The two things that i say pop culture really had a impact on me is fashions and music. Im the type of person i dont really party don't really tend to hang out with friends unless im playing a sport. I like to keep to myself so i tend to use my time wisely when im either out of school or on the weekends to better myself in the sports i play. i would say music is a big part of my everyday just simply because whenever im bored or want to concentrate on my work or my game i just listen to music. Music is something that helps me focus on life and i listen to the lyrics because i understand what they're saying and many songs i can really relate to and its soothing for my soul and my mindset.

I would fashion has to be one of the biggest thing to me. I love sports, i love music, but fashion is something i pride myself on. Its hard for me to step out my house without wearing something thats people going to have a positive statement about. Fashion is deffiantly life to me cause i like to look classy no matter where im going. To alot of people fashion is not really importan but to me it helps me express myself and what about and the type of clothes im into. Plus who would want to go out in public and have people talking about you im the type of person whether or not people talking about me in a positive way or negative it doesn't affect me all i see it as theyre talking about me so i have to be important .

    2. I do think that my fashion is an extension of my personality. For better or worse, people will judge us based on what we look like and what we wear, so why not represent yourself in a way that matches you as a person.

Popular culture has taken the world by storm nowadays and possibly will continue into the next generation. Many people as we speak right now are probably getting adapted to popular culture such as a change in fashion or behavior. Elements of popular culture that have influenced my identity are mostly based on television and music. Many television shows can teach a person a lesson or it could bring entertainment to a person making the show popular. For example, The Walking Dead, it’s a very popular show seen by many and talked by many. The action and drama that builds up in it just grabs the person’s attention by watching it and can influence people into recommending others to watch it. When I said that television is one of the elements of popular culture that have influenced me the most I enjoy watching TV series that I think is fun to watch and teaches you new things. I enjoy watching anime and the anime that has influenced me the most in life is Naruto (P.S. for all those who enjoy anime this is one heck of a series which I recommend even for those who don’t watch anime this is an amazing anime) I even grew up with the series.
Since Naruto’s debut in the year 2002 all the way until now I have still been watching it and it will always be remembered by me when the series ends. From the anime it is heavily a popular culture in Japan where to them Naruto is compared to The Walking Dead as to being a popular television series in Japan. A thing that I learned from the anime is the spirit to never give up from any obstacle that’s in your way. Music has also influenced me as there are many genres of music that can make you feel different whether a person is in a good mood or in a bad mood. Music is a popular culture and in my opinion, forever will be as many people enjoy listening to it and even have the urge to write music. A cultural trend that I reject would have to be a bit of technology as many new phones and laptops are coming out, I’m fine with the IPhone and MacBook Pro laptop that I have. In time I’ll try to buy them but for now patience is needed in order to grow. Popular culture will come to the senses of more people, as they will look to equip to popular culture.

    1. I agree that tv shows have grown to have a major influence with people - I personally will watch a show to see what the hype is about and so that I can participate in the conversations around the proverbial water cooler at work. One of the best animes I've seen lately is called "Attack on Titan" -- check it out if you like anime. I watch a decent amount of it.

  5. I personally do think people are influenced because i am one of those. Some of those popular cultures I see are mostly from rappers, actors, and some games. I get my choices from games. What i mean by this is that i play games that involve your choices. By this i am know how certain situations will turn out to be. I get my style from rappers. I like how many rappers dress so that influenced me and i try to try like them even though it isn't 100%. I act certain ways because i kinda like to show different emotions. Sometimes though when i am really mad or i'm having a problem i might not act in a different way.
I tend to reject different cultures like the bad ones. Some of the bad ones are the cursing or man others. I personally only curse when i'm mad or when it accidentally slips out. I tend to try and avoid those. I avoid them because i don't want to have a bad vibe. Vibes in this world are important. Having a bad one can affect your future in a bad way.

    1. Can you explain a bit more by what you mean about the games you choose? Give examples of games that involve the choices you mention. I agree that cursing should be saved for extreme situations, otherwise the impact is lost.

  6. Pop culture influences me more than I'd like to think. I don't really like pop music and neither do books, because I don't read them. I am influenced by movies, technology, games and trends. The movies I watch are usually inspiring like Harry Potter, Huger Games, and Percy Jackson. These movies inspire me to be brave and work hard. I don't go out of my way to try to be like a character in a film, book, or video game. I am myself through and through but everyonce in a while I may pick up something new that I liked. For example, if I like what someone wears in something pop culture than I may decide to wear it. Video games have highly influenced me, I play them all the time, almost every day if not. These animated characters have highly sculpted my personality into what it is today. I get easily frustrated, somewhat bold, easily ticked off, and a try hard (haha). The video games I enjoy are usually extremely frustrating especially when you fail and almost reach a checkpoint. In most video games I am the on who charges the enemy and tries to kill everyone, I make bold moves and decisions. I am easily angered by people, in video games campers, noobs, and auto-lock users are the worst. These people get me extremely frustrated and pissed off because they are cowardly and usually 8 years old.
I reject cultural trends such as clothing trends and musical trends. I have never been into fashion trends and girly clothing, I hate wearing my hair down, frilly clothing, skinny jeans and I would never be caught dead in pink. Almost everyone wears these types of clothing but I've always been a plain Jane. Secondly, everyone is into rap music and pop music. I can't listen to most of either genre. These trending music genres aren't appealing to me. Frankly, I don't care about lil Wayne's club visit or Wiz Khalifas stash (Paperbond). I enjoy listening to country music, and hearing an actual story that means something. I also reject the technological trends of today. I have noticed the increase in smart phone users in our school. Android, Galaxy, IPhone and Windows phones are a major trend in today's society. I do not have one of these small pocket computers I have a simple flip phone that gets the job done. These phones aren't needed, a flip phone with a keyboard gets the job done as well as a super smart phone. Overall, I try not to let trends influence me but it usually does.

  7. Pop culture influences the young people in our society in one way or another. So many things influence us in different ways and we may not even realize it. Movies, music, advertisements and television may be appealing to the public. For example, usually once a famous person wears something it usually becomes a trend. The item that is becoming trendy may not even be attractive, it's just because a famous person wore it. The trend will last for a while but eventually it will fade and another trend will start. I like following the latest styles in clothes. If I see someone wearing something I like, I would probably go look for it in a store and buy it. Music also has affect on our society. New music, singers and bands are trying to make it in the music world. Many young people will follow a band or a type of music and begin to dress like them. For example, many people who listen to hard rock tend will dress more like the singers. They are thought of as wearing black clothes with chains. I like different types of music and I don't think music really influences my clothing choice. Technology also has a big impact on my life. In the past few years phones have gotten more advanced and will only improve in the future. I remember the days when I didn't have a phone, but now I couldn't imagine life without my phone. I would say that is the biggest impact on my life. It keeps me in touch with my friends, music and trends. Trends definitely influence my life in both positive and negative ways.

    1. I understand exactly what you are saying. Although, when you stated that many people probably dress like the bands or people who sing the music they listen to I do not agree. Sure, it could happen but I for one do not tend to dress in black and wear chains even though I listen to the bands Get Scared, Escape the Fate, BVB, and Motionless in White. They do not influence me in the least for I am not going to kill or hurt myself anytime soon, But yes I know what you are saying that people may dress like them but I for one; tend not to in my opinion.

    2. I think it is true that certain people mimic the styles of the stars/bands they favor. Even I am guilty of buying an item because it is trendy. You both made good points. I am surprised that there are lyrics supposedly out there which encourage suicide. Is that confirmed? Are there examples? That is sad.

  8. What influences me is basically anything and everything. If I watch a movie or read a book and it has an influential meaning behind it that most likely will influence me. Take the book “Freedom Writers Diary” for example; it is written by teenagers and includes personal experiences. I got influenced by reading that book because it is very relatable and taught me to be happy for what I already have in life. It also taught me that I could be a lot worse of in life; though I am not and I should appreciate that. When I was younger I read the book “The Spiderwick Chronicles” which included facts and stories about fairies, giants, and all sorts of creatures. When I was younger that influenced me to have a different perspective of life and to actually go out and try to find these thought to be made up creatures. Ever since I was eight and read those books I have been enchanted to learn about the fairy tales and creatures of this earth and I am still inquisitive today. Television, in fact does not inspire me as I watch shows about zombies and killing; so that is a very good thing none of that inspires me to go out and do those things myself. Although, occasionally people need to take influence from a television show for sometimes there are beneficial aspects to them. Say a show comes on about how to become a millionaire; that could and should inspire children of this generation. Video games do influence me at times, unfortunately for when I decide to play GTA V, or even CoD I may feel the need to cuss out my parents or friends as I have done. Usually, I do not repeat the names or words I hear on those games; but sometimes from hearing it so often it slips out. Other than that I do not get influenced by video games; if I kill someone on a game I know for sure I won’t go out and try to perform those deeds myself.
What cultural trends I reject include fashion, television, and the cussing one. Today, a lot of people try to be someone they are not and curse and do drugs. I do not get influenced by drugs or smoking as I never have and I intend not to. But society seems to upraise drugs, smoking, underage sex as it is considered “cool”, and or “hip”. Now todays fashion, seriously don’t even get me started. I do not care about the latest trends, or what celebrities do that people say are negatively influencing young children. If I want new clothes I will get them myself but I am not obsessed with keeping up with everyone else. On television a lot of singers may try and talk about obscured things in their songs. A singer named Miley Cyrus who has created uproar recently is an example. I do not get affected by things such as that for I feel if that is how they choose to run their life let it be; even if I don’t agree with it. In certain shows where people have a bunch of money and show it off by having parties I do not get influenced and I mainly don’t even watch those shows. Shows such as 16 and Pregnant don’t influence me either for that is their choice to do what they have done. Shows like that shouldn’t impact people for they should be for entertainment. Even if they have parties and get pregnant that doesn’t mean everyone should follow suit.

    1. Great response, Leah. I completely agree with you on the second paragraph. It is a shame what society has come to to. People should not be influenced by what society has deemed "cool" or "hip". Things like what it is on television should only be for entertainment and nothing else. Fashion should also be based off of what you want to where and not care what other people have to say.

    2. Good points, both. There are definitely shameful things about popular culture that should (but are not) rejected by today's youth.

  9. Music, books, movies, anything that we read, see, or hear the things influences what to do. What I mean by that is that whenever we see our favorite rapper or favorite movie we try to be like them or what they say we try to do the things. Whenever I’m in a bad mood I listen to music because it helps me to release my anger and I can connect to what the singer is saying. I like to listen to Eminem because he was been through times and the music mainly talks about the struggle, not like other rappers that just talks about drugs, and ‘‘fame’’. Lose yourself by Eminem inspired me a lot because the song is mainly about trying to chase your dream and don’t let nobody go in front of you. Also if you’re going through a rough time don’t let those bad voices get into your mind and try to stop you. When I listened to music it motivated me and I practice almost every day trying to chase my dream to become a pro soccer player. Before every game I would listen to music and it will get me pumped and ill have confidence about myself. The funny thing is if I don’t listen to music I would play as good as. So the music actually helps me a lot. The music actually helps me to find my identity and who I really I am.
When I listen to music it kind of changes my attitude sometimes music motivates me to change as who I am but it may be a bad thing or good thing. I like to listen to songs that have deep thoughts about life because it may give you advices and people should take them and express them to the world. My personality got better now I’m more mature then I use to be music had changed my life and without music I would be a dull kid. I try to be different from other in the world I want to be unique and if everybody does the same thing it would be boring. For example, many kids were getting Mohawks so I wanted to be different from others I wanted to be unique, so I did the comb over and everybody liked it. If you do something different from society you will grab people attentions and you wouldn’t be different from others .

    1. Music is definitely an element of pop culture that seems to speak to a great deal of the American population -- it seems to be strongly connected to mood, and therefore, be able to help individuals achieve a certain energy level or attitude. It is always more interesting to stand out (in a positive fashion) than blend in with the crowd, in my opinion.

Nothing influences me that much except video games. Most of the times I tend to try to look like someone in a video game for Halloween or just daily. For example I have a leather jacket from this one game called prototype and I like to wear it a lot. But, nothing else I try to mimic or none that I notice. Maybe I do and I don’t notice that I’m mimicking that influence. Other times I tend to act like what I see on a movie or TV show like I’ll make my voice sound low to the point where it doesn’t sound like me.
I know that other people are influence by the things other people wear or what’s in style today. But, I’m more of the person to dress how I like and not really care for what is the fashion today. If I like it I’m going to wear it and no one will tell me different. I tend to go my own way, do what I want, be a leader not a follower, and you know what it has worked out for me.

  11. Pop culture is a central part of our generation in today’s society. It can be defined as cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people. Pop culture includes music, books, movies, fashion, technology, television and so much more. It influences us a lot. We are growing up in this era of pop culture. Most of us wear clothes from brand name stores, we watch the highest grossing movies at movie theatres, we sing along with songs that come up on the radio and we watch our favorite TV shows in our spare time. It’s hard to avoid pop culture because we are constantly surrounded by it. For example, I am constantly watching YouTubers. I like to watch Pewdiepie, PrankvsPrank and PointlessBlog because they can make me laugh every day. My sense of humor is influenced by them. I also like to watch people I can relate to such as AmazingPhil and Danisnotonfire. I also learn several things about our society from YouTubers like TheFineBros. (Through them I learned the Cup Song was created by putting together the Cup Game and a song from the 1930s.) I am also strongly influenced by music. I wouldn’t be able to live without it because some songs brighten my day when I hear them and I can relate to situations presented in the lyrics. It has gotten to the point where I immediately think of a song when someone accidently says the lyrics to it. Popular books are also a big influence because I am constantly reading them and they have turned me into an avid reader.
However, not all pop culture affects me or everybody else. In today’s society we are surrounded by words such as YOLO or SWAG. A lot of people use these terms but, I’m not one to use them. I don’t know why but, it doesn’t appeal to me. There is also the ceaseless use of technology. Of course, I am guilty of using my phone constantly but, I don’t think of myself as a person who is addicted to it. (For example, this YouTube video demonstrates how much our generation is addicted to phones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OINa46HeWg8.) Everyone is just continually on their phone using an app or taking a selfie. I am also not one to take selfies because it isn’t an activity I am interested in. People like Justin Bieber are an influence in pop culture but, not positively. I mean seriously, how many times has he been arrested? I’ve lost count. I choose not to pay him any attention because he is a negative on pop culture. However, he is still a major role in pop culture along with YOLO, SWAG, selfies and phones but, I choose not to follow these trends. Even though pop culture is intended to aim for the tastes of the majority of people, it doesn’t mean every single person is going to follow the new trend. We can’t let pop culture affect our individuality. Therefore, it is important to follow the trends we personally like and enjoy instead; of following them because they are popular.

  12. The media has an influence over everyone one way or another. Whether it is magazines or video games or fashion etc., it is all the same. Of course, I myself am influenced by the media as well. I have always enjoyed reading, watching YouTube videos, and playing video games, and so they are my two biggest influences. Thanks to this, I tend to talk about Pokémon a lot during conversation as well as make references to things I’ve read or watched. A famous YouTuber named PewDiePie has influenced a lot of people and my friends and I tend bring him up in conversation. As for reading, I have read many books and it is fun to talk about them every once in a while. Frankly, the reason I am good at English is because I read a lot of books when I have any free time. Unfortunately, since high school started I have been too busy to read as much as I would like to. The way I see it, the only time I have to read is during any break of sorts.
While there is media that influences me, there are also ones that don’t influence me. Fashion and any modern music have no effect on me. I like to dress with what I feel looks right, whether or not it is stylish. I gave up on trying to have “swag” and instead mock it from time to time. If you ask me, swag is just spending hundreds of dollars on one piece of clothing when in reality the quality is no better than a decently priced pair of clothing. As for modern music, I hate rap. It just never made sense to me. There is only one song that I like that has rap in it, and even then it’s six years old or so. I like to listen to music from the past. I am not sure why, but I just do. Perhaps it has to do with my personality in general and the things I have experienced so far. My mind has always been a jungle of feelings and I plan to eventually vent them all out. But that is getting off topic. Overall, I feel that the media has had more of a positive effect on me. Without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

    2. I agree with what you are saying. I care about what I look like when I dress, but I don't really worry at times what it looks like as long as it looks put together. Also about the "swag" part, I totally agree with what you're saying because spending a tone of money on clothing is really no different then buying something that is at a decent cost.

  13. Young people everywhere are influenced by pop culture. Pop culture is anything from movies, books, music, trends, fashion, television, technology, games, behaviors, and many more. Pop culture does not influence my life that much. I honestly don’t care what anyone is wearing, doing, or saying. As long as it does not involve me, my family or close friends, I don’t care. I watch movies, television, listen to music, and I play sports and video games, but none of them have ever influenced or changed my identity because I am who I am and I don’t want to be anyone besides myself. No pop culture really influences my life the only things that influence my identity are religion, my family, and my friends.
The only things I’ve borrowed to construct my attitude toward life and my personality are the teachings of the church and the rest of my personality and my attitude toward life comes from what I have developed from growing up, viewing society, and developing relationships with other people. With the clothing I where is not influenced by anything or anyone, but myself. If its comfortable then I’ll wear it, I don’t care if celebrities or any famous person is wearing it; I just wear what I like. I don’t reject any culture trends because if they don’t concern me, I wouldn’t even pay attention to them. The choices I make and the things I do are not influenced specifically to pop cultural.

    1. I like dhow you really just stick to who you are. You wear, do, act, say, behave, etc like you want and you don't let pop culture define you. That is really awesome, it seems that too many people nowadays will change their appearance or personality just because it makes them cooler or because pop culture says it's what they should do. I especially like how you talked about the clothes you wear being only important for comfort and that you like. Most people wear Hollister because it's "hip" and "cool". I like how you are your own person.

    2. Does your group of friends tend to prefer certain trends to others? You mentioned that you all like to do the same things, like play games...isn't that an influence? I do like that you define yourself as a person driven by family and religion -- it is good to know what motivates each of your behaviors.

Media has a lot of influence on people in many ways. Myself, I am influenced by mainly media. I mainly focus on fashion, television, and movies but the one that more influences is fashion. Fashion makes me more interested more than television and movies. I don't really watch television as much as I used to, plus I don't put my focus on celebrities as much. Maybe sometimes because I'm focusing on what they are wearing more than what they do on TV or in movies. I pay attention to celebrities like Selena Gomez, Zendaya, and Ariana Grande. They have great fashion sense in my opinion. The way I dress isn't really based on any celebrity that I like, it's all on my own perspective of what I like. Ever since high school has begun and has carried on, I feel that the beginning of the year I had totally dressed a different way then I did in seventh grade, but as of now in the present I feel that the way I dress and my style is different than it was in the beginning of the year. I just pay attention to what looks good and what I like, and then I take that and look at clothes to see if they look good on me, but I don't pay attention to the price because the cost of something doesn't really matter because it's all the same.

While those are the ones that influence me, there are ones that don't influence me as much. Such as music and books. I love music, don't get me wrong but it doesn't really influence me as much as fashion does. I like rap, country, and pop but the words in the songs don't make me want to change myself or my image because I don't care what others think, honestly. When it comes to books the story that they are trying to tell make me think of what might happen in reality but it doesn't make me want to change myself or image or even do certain things that might be wrong. Books and music honestly don't influence me in any kind of way.

    1. I agree with you completly. I think media influence people majorly. I also agree some music can have the wrong impact on people.

    2. I like what you say about fashion. Clothes are something that I do pay attention to, but not in the way that people think. I like outfits which tell stories -- as an English teacher, I think of myself as a storyteller and a lover of stories, no matter the format. The way I feel in something is definitely more important than what anyone thinks about it.

  15. People are influenced by everythink in todays world. Teenagers and children are especially influened by the music that they listen to, the video games they play, and the clothes that they wear. The things that influence my identity and personality are the books I read, the technology that i use, and the clothes that I wear. For example I only read history books. So as you can guess history is my favorite subject, everyone in the grade knows that I'm like the grade historian. My personality is that history is very personal to me if someone says something wrong I get very affened and tell them the correct answer. For example if someon say the declaration was sighned july 4 1788 I would tell them it was 1776. Secondly the technology that I use is the computer, phone, and TV. The computer and TV influence me because it helps me stay in contact with world event. So it influences me two ways it show me I am involved in the world, and teach me historical events that might have happen. My phone on the other hand I use on the run to stay incontact with my friends. For example I use my phone to constantly go on Instagram, Facebook, and twitter. This effects me two way it show that I am social media involved and that I am addicted to technology. Lastly is the clothes that I wear. The clothes that I wear represent my social hight. There fore I only wear the best clothes for example I wear Hollister, American Eagle. By wearing these clothes it show that I stay in touch with the latest clothes and that I can affored the best clothes. This shows that i am ego centric, that I care about my friends but I care about myself more. I have not borrowed anythink from anywere.
There are many cultural trends. Many I support and even do. On the other hand there are some that I reject. For example I reject the cultual trend of pircing redicules places like the tong, nose, or anywere else besides the ear. I reject this because firstly it is discusting and can make those people sick.Anther trend that I dont support is drinking alchol at a young age because if you do you will probably stop growing, have no control over your body, and become stupid. I also reject the trend of smoking and doing drugs at a young age. This trend is just killing you if you do it. It will lead to lung cancer. It could evn be worse you can over toce and kill yourself. There for this is why I don't support any of these trends.

    1. By following the latest trends in technology and clothes, aren't you in a sense borrowing from pop culture? You have a strong grasp on the things you like and the reasons for your attraction to them. The trends in the second paragraph can definitely be destructive at a young age, especially when allowed to run rampant. However, in my opinion, piercing, since they are not temporary, are not as bad as you seem to paint them to be.

  16. Pop culture is something that influences people to do a lot of things. Sometimes it influences them to do better things, and sometimes worse. I personally have been influenced my artist for reasons that no one would even understand. Pop culture influences you through lyrics mainly because I know everyone likes music. Pop culture doesn’t always influence you to change the way you dress and everything about you; it changes you for the better. I value artists because they have lyrics that if you think about them have an actual meaning. Bands/ artists have also influenced people to become happy again and not to kill themselves.
I know most people don’t think that a band can save your life or even a single. It is true because so many people that I know have been saved by bands and singers. For example, Justin Bieber may have changed but he has still saved so many people’s lives that I know. I know people who have been saved by many boy bands as well. Pop culture has changed and influenced not my clothes but by the way I act. Even though I may love a celebrity, I won’t try to look like them because then you’re changing yourself into someone you don’t want to be. I think that pop culture had changed my life for the better.

    1. I love that you are attracted to songs for their lyrical message -- most of my favorite songs are ones that tell stories in an interesting fashion, use interesting words, or compose sentences which are unconventional. As a form of poetry, I tend to be drawn more to the words in a song than the music, but that is probably because I can't carry a tune.

I think that one of the biggest influences in people especially me, is YouTube. YouTube is an incredibly popular website, most people have accounts and are subscribed to people and enjoy watching them. YouTube has changed my identity because I say a lot of thing or phrases that I’ve picked up from people on YouTube that I watch. For example, there is a youtuber called ASFJerome. He does this weird slurping noise that I thought was funny, and because of him last year I used to make the same noise. Another Youtuber called Jacksfilms has a series called Your Grammar Sucks, in which he reads people’s incorrect grammar and spelling. Some words that I say I will purposely say wrong because I heard it from him and thought it was funny. I don’t think there is anything that changes my personality or my attitude on life. In my opinion social media can’t change how I think of life and it especially can’t change who I am and my personality.
One of the pop culture trends I reject is selfies. I don’t understand the popularity of taking a selfie. To me taking a picture of oneself many times a day for absolutely no reason and posting it online for people to see is silly. I have no need or desire to ever take a picture of myself at any time except for at a special occasion or with other people. Most people tend to post these pictures on Instagram. Maybe taking a picture of yourself and having people like it on Instagram is self-gratifying, but to me it just isn’t a fun or worthwhile thing to do. Also, on the same topic, I reject the trend of taking pictures of food. I fail to understand what is so appealing about taking pictures of food and posting it online. I don’t think that many people really care what someone is about to eat or is having for dinner. Why people don’t just eat the food instead of spending 5 minutes taking pictures of it from several angles is a mystery to me. Also, a trend I really hate is hash tags. This trend is incredibly prevalent on twitter and used often on Instagram. For Instagram some people write entire sentences with a hash tag in front of each word. All I can think of is “WHY?!” I can’t stand when in real life people say the word hash tag before saying something. Hash tag really doesn’t have a specific meaning or use in actual dialogue so why say it?

    1. I like the idea of the "Your Grammar Sucks" YouTube channel; however, I would probably feel too mean using elements of it. I enjoy that you tend to be drawn to the pop culture things that you think are funny. Humor is important in life. I often rant about the same issues as you present in your second paragraph -- the selfie is an art that is definitely lost on me, especially with the frequency that some people upload them. I have been guilty of a food picture or two once a year on my feed, but that is mainly to prove to people that I can indeed cook, I just choose not to. Don't even get me started on hashtags...

  18. There are many people out in the world that are influenced by many of the elements of pop culture. The elements that influence me the most are technology, the music, and some books. But there are some things I do reject like fashion and trends. There just somethings in fashion that I just find weird. Then trends like social websites I don't like all of that twitter and instagram stuff, you can say I'm somewhat socially awkward.

My technology influence comes from T.V shows and movies; like in any modern movie or T.V show. Movies also influences my behavior of what I act like and what is cool. The music that they play in the movies and T.V shows are good and I listen to those too. For example the show Teen Wolf and Bates Motel. Now I also like archery because of the books The Hunger Games.

  19. Young people are highly influenced by popular culture. Television, newspapers and magazines, movies and social media are all sources in which the youth get their ideas of the pop culture. Younger people accept the cultures of popular culture as their own, believing that those values are central to their personal development and social acceptance. I do not watch movies often, nor do I read books but I am somewhat influenced by music, fashion, and the media. I listen to hip-hop, R&B, and some rap and the ideas of that music is often junk. They are often about money, drinking and partying; it is all nonsense. At times, I feel ashamed to listen to that type of music, but it is what I like. I do listen to other music, but the beats of the songs are what attract my attention of the hip-hop songs, so my intentions aren’t to be cool and party or participate in activities that are for adults. My fashion is not exactly based on the pop culture either. I wear what I feel most comfortable wearing. I tend to not show much skin and basically wear whatever makes me feel good. I feel that the clothes we wear express the kind of person they are. I admit I do judge people by what they wear. If they are wearing crop tops, showing cleavage, or anything that look “slutty” or possibly “dirty” in school constantly, I am going to get the wrong impression of you. To be honest my close friends sometimes wear those types of clothing and I have gave them my input on it. But, at the same time, if that’s what they like to wear then I can’t change that. Furthermore, I am always comparing myself to others whether it includes my body, my face in general and usually the clarity of someone’s skin. These comparisons cause me to want to look like them or get discouraged because of how much I admire their beauty. I feel like I can never be completely happy in my own body, but that’s only because of society’s idea of being ‘perfect’. In clothing or make up magazines such as Ulta or Delias I see females with an amazing figure, a beautiful white smile, the best hair, and smooth/ clear looking skin. Seeing all of this makes me feel like I am not good looking enough since they have these features I don’t have. It is difficult to stop comparing myself to others, but it is hard when everyone is influenced by the movies, books, music, trends, fashion, television, games, behaviors, etc.

    1. Do you like the music you listen to for the rhythm? If you don't like the message in the songs, do you listen to it because it is funny or catchy? I think most people will admit to judging (at least at first) based on appearances and I agree that clothes are an extension of someone's personality. Also, those magazines you mentioned are famously photo-shopped (there are numerous videos showing before and after). No one has the "perfect" everything. You are beautiful just the way you are.

  20. Like most of many females who's into fashion, feminism, and stylish ways of living luxuriously, I'm usually influenced and motivated by magazines, television, and also some users on Instagram who's successful and is a great idol to follow. In television, I would always watch traveling channel, TBS, BET, Bio, or Oxygyn. On the following channels, I'd love to pick up techniques on how to cook, watch interesting places to tour, observe people's fashion and standards of living. Especially on BET and Oxygyn, people usually dress based on the trending fashion. On Instagram, there would be individuals who would go to gym, eat healthy, wear new highly fashioned clothes, and drive nice cars. Interestingly, those people I chose to follow not only is healthy, they are also well educated and we'll behaved. I'm always influenced by how strong and motivated they are towards their lives.

Although, there are many cultural trends that I despise and reject, such as music industries and some television shows that flashes the corrupting society of the new generation. Pop music and hip hop these days do not teach people how to behave properly, many lyrics are based on stupidity and ignorance. One of the most popular pop music I detest so much is "I don't care I love it" by Niamh. I believe many people have heard of this song, it's terrible. Based on music nowadays, I felt worried about what might have happen in the future where kids would enjoy singing stupid songs without thinking and thus construct themselves from those trends. Another example I'm sure everyone knows of that signifies idiotic society is the show Bad Girls Club and Jersey Shore. No need to describe what Bad Girls Club is about, the title is self explanatory. Lord help us, they're terrible. Even though they live luxuriously, they present themselves as the most ill-mannered, lazy, and corrupting people to ever existed. My influence would always have come from those who're successful, is well educated, and who's fit to be examples from people to learn from, not people who's motivated by hate and ignorance.

    1. It's great that you use social media and television to actually make yourself better or two learn new skills or information. I used to watch those travel shows and get jealous...and the cooking shows, though I rarely got inspired to actually make a meal. Mostly, I was just made hungry...

The Pop Culture world. Many say that they are not influenced by anyone and they are themselves. Well I find that to be nonsense many people are influenced by rappers or people with the same type of mentality which I could rant about for hours on end with my own personal opinions. Some say that the way they are is the way they want but if they say that there is no way to find out if they are something they don't want to be. For me I will always try something new unless I for sure no its not right or I will not like it. Whether it be something or someone influencing me or a friend asking for me to do it with them.

I am influenced by many things like T.V. or magazines. Things that I have always been influenced by are videos. The reason being that ever since I had gotten my ipod for my birth day I have a youtube fanatic. Since then i have wanted to do youtube for a living and it will always be a goal of mine.

  22. The bulk of modern pop culture is made up of useless ideas, idiotic people, and disappointing people. To make matters worse, they are accompanied by a massive amount of teenage followers. Kids now want to be the next Kim Kardashian (who basically did nothing in order to get rich and famous) or all want to be singers, because their favorite celebrity told them to. They admire the dangerous, self-destructive lives some celebrities lead, rather than staying clear from them. It’s quite sad to see kids my age aspire to have lives such as going to jail on drug charges, having a new boyfriend every month, or getting rich and famous of of a sex tape. This isn't the case with many teens, but it is the case with too many.

As for me, I tend to push all of society’s crap away from me. I don’t pay attention to people
like Justin Bieber who, despite many adoring fans, is just an overgrown brat, who needs to be shown there’s 8 billion people on the planet, and he’s not even close to being the most important. I absorb the good in today's society, things most people don’t want to even touch. Even from not so good people, lessons can be learned. For example, the highly overused and overrated YOLO. It’s annoying, stupid, and the anthem for idiots without an excuse. However, a couple things can be taken from it; First, we don’t have to be limited by fear, and should our lives to their fullest extent. Also, we only have one life, so we should spend it wisely. Again, life is full of crap, but we need to be able to sift through that, in order to find the hidden jewels.
