Blog 11: Current Event

DUE FRIDAY DECEMBER 6, 2013
For this week's blog, choose one current event from a reputable news source to inform the class of an issue or news topic going on in the world. Read through articles online in sources such as The New York Times or Time Magazine; you may also find interesting articles on cnn.com, USA Today, or Psychology Today. You are open to any topic of your choice. Once you choose an article of interest to you, read it in its entirety before discussing it.

In your first paragraph, tell us who is involved or who it affects, what is happening, when the event takes place, where it is happening, how the events unfold, and why it is newsworthy. In your second paragraph, discuss the issue of the news article in relation to students and society. What are its future implications? What is the larger impact of the event/topic and what can people learn or do with it?

Post a link to the news article after your response so we can read the article itself. Then, each student must read one other article from any blog post by following the link and respond to that student’s post--building upon it, disagreeing with it, or re-thinking it.

Also, no two people are allowed to post on the same current event for their original post.

  1. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/02/health/weight-loss-matthew-mullins/index.html?hpt=he_t4

Matthew Mullins, at the age of 32, was diagnosed with hypertension on February of 2012. From there on, he has decided to change his lifestyle completely. Matthew Mullins is a gay man who was found to have high blood pressure and an obese man with 206 pounds, and only being 5’10. But after one year, Mullins weights about 170 pounds, and only contains about 8% body fat, and is so confident in himself that he barely wears his shirt around.
This is all begin on February in 2012 where he went to his regular check up, and is when he found out he had high blood pressure, or hypertension. Him facing the fact that his mother died of obesity and high blood pressure made him rethink how he is living, on how he is controlling the diet he is consuming. He than began to control his diet, cut out the fats and high sugars, and to intake more greens. In about two months Mullins had lost about 15 pounds and decided to start exercising. Later with the help of his friends, they began to compete to see who is in the best shape and began an exercising organization called Hash tag Run. After one year of this new radical change in his life, and taking photos as he progressed. All of this was done and showed that anyone can change the way they are; all it toke was motivation and the confidence to do so.
This article relates to society and students in so many ways. To begin with, society now a days does not like to include over weighed people, and it’s true because I see it everywhere, and being fat is one of the main reasons of bullying. Plus students around my age now tend to look at their physique now. Girls want that Melanie Iglesias figure, and want that nice six-pack figure. And all of this is because of social media and how society views it. Most famous people are attractive people with a nice physique and make both girls and boys jealous and then later want to strive for that appearance. Moreover, this article is very helpful and can make huge impact on people. This is because the story is very inspirational story. Matthew Mullins was an overweighed man who then in one year was able to achieve a nice physique for a guy. This can help give anyone who is having the same struggle to get the confidence to achieve the goal. For example, I myself don’t have the best physique out there, but after reading such an inspiration article, it shows that anything is possible, all it takes is motivation and confidence!

    1. After reading the article, I do agree with opinion. The article truly is inspiring. I mean, it's not everyday that a man turns his life around and actually gets into shape. However, people always complain about not having any time to exercise. In reality, they just don't want to do it. Sure, there are those people who just don't have time, but then there are others who are just too darn lazy to actually exercise and eat right. It can be a hassle at first, but when you start doing it regularly, it can become fun and even a habit. Honestly, it's despicable that people ignore overweight people as if they don't exist. Just because people are overweight doesn't mean they are any less human than you. Also, you are completely right about how people in high school really care about their figure. After all, this is when dating actually starts and the dances are actually romantic. It makes sense that students would want to look the best. But the thing that people forget is that it's what matters on the inside that counts. Just because you're the prettiest girl in school doesn't mean that you have a nice personality. After all, looks can be deceiving. Overall, school now just seems to be a popularity contest. Students everywhere yelling, "Swag!" and other words of that nature. As I've said before, I really wonder how the next generation of children is going to turn out. But after all, there is such a thing as being too overweight. But who knows, maybe there will be a fat-reducing pill that actually works. A slogan, such as, " The fat just walks away".

Survival is now in play as pilot whales are stranded in Florida’s Everglades Park and the expectation rate of survival for these whales are low. According to cnn.com the pilot whales wildlife officials are unsure for how long these whales have been stranded.
The stranded whales could affect the population of pilot whales if they start to die off while being stranded causing it to go extinct but god forbid this from happening because I enjoy the sight of whales. The problem occurred today December 4, 2013 and as said before at Florida’s Everglades Park. It appears that some of these pilot whales have homes near the shallow area in which case when they arrived they where there are sandbars and sand flats. Ten whales are now dead due to being stranded after being found in poor condition. Rescuers are using five boats to create a blockade of sorts to encourage the pilot whales to go back to the Gulf of Mexico so that they won’t get stranded. An incident such as this is newsworthy because whales are an important part of our ecosystem and there are animals that are going endangered and I don’t want that to happen to these whales. Whales should be treated as humans with respect, proper care, and joy to the natural world. The death of pilot whales will make them a species that have died off such as the dinosaurs.
The future implications would be the whales going extinct and affecting its population. From reading this article, people could learn that animals are going to rough times in life right now such as deforestation, extinction, and loss of habitat by hunters. Animals such as the pilot whales are beginning to decline in number and we all went them to get back home safe and out from this wretched stranding in which they are in right now. Pilot whales are part of the world and part of nature, we as humans are also part of the world think about the situation these whales are in right now and to keep updated on their status as they fight for survival

The people involved in this article are Michael Morton, his wife Christine Morton, and his son Eric. Michael Morton was sentenced to 25 years in jail because his wife was murdered and there were no other suspects involved. Even though Michael was not even home when this occurred, he was still held responsible. This event took place August 13, 1986, and it was in Williamson County, Texas. It was just a normal day for Michael until he returns home to his wife dead. He was at work at the time, but he was still convicted and was found guilty because there were no other suspects, he was still guilty even with no sufficient evidence, but he got out and is now close with his son. This article is newsworthy because it tells the heart-breaking story of an innocent man being punished for a crime he didn't commit, and it explains what he went through with only seeing his son twice a year, and pretty much having no relationship with his only son.

The issue that the article had in relation to society is the lack of information the police had against him, but he was still punished. They had no reason to put him in prison, he was innocent and wasn't even in the same area as his wife when she was killed. That is literally the same thing if I came home from school and found my parents dead and then I'd be put in prison. I had nothing to do with it, and I was in another place, and I would have proof that I was at school. The larger impact of this article is that someone can't blame someone else just because of their ignorance. The people had no proof or information is he did it or not, so they assumed he did it and he was punished because of their lack or information.

  4. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/12/02/school-lunch-photos/3784625/
This article discusses the results of an online campaign in which student’s uploaded photos of the lunches served in their schools. This campaign that ran from September 10 to November 15 of 2013 received 7,319 lunch photos. This online event shows uploaded photos of common lunches such as pizza, chicken nuggets, nachos, hamburgers, salads and sandwiches. However, when posted online, the ratio between the people who would eat it or toss it out was staggering. Most people would toss out the food then eat it. However, it is hard to judge the photos without knowing the whole story. This story is newsworthy since students may have to consume this healthy food for five days a week which will affect the health of students our age.

Students and our society are heavily impacted on the topic discussed in this article. Many people in our society are faced with the issue of being overweight because of the unhealthy eating styles they choose. There are thousands of fast food chains, such as McDonald’s and Burger King, which contribute to this issue. Now all these unhealthy foods from fast food chains and such have invaded the cafeterias of some schools. These students have the option to eat all this greasy and unhealthy food for five days a week. This can contribute to the problem of people being overweight. Our society has to help prevent this problem of obesity but, the fact that unhealthy foods are being served in school cafeterias doesn’t help. Now children and students face the problem with being obese. There are several people in the country that have diabetes and other diseases that are caused from unhealthy eating, which many people are at risk of. This issue has to be prevented so that we, the future generation, have longer and healthier lives.

Sometimes when i eat i think about what i am actually putting into my body, and healthier choices are better to go with in life. Better for the brain and body i feel schools should indeed provide their cafeteria with nothing but healthy choices for all the students.

This article talks about how Google reported that they overrun seven robotic companies to make their own for the past half year. It is being led by Andy Rubin, “who was previously in charge of the Android operating system”. However, they won’t be sold for human consumption, reported the New York Times. Instead, it could be used with Google’s self-driving car research to help deliver goods to people automatically. This would then rival Amazon’s Prime Air Project, which envisions using robots to deliver goods to customers by air. Andy Rubin says that Google thinks that in 10 years, the project will be completed. Google has also “recently begun a same-day grocery delivery service in San Francisco and San Jose, called Google Shopping Express”. The article also said that Prof. Sethu Vijayakumar, director of the robotics lab at the University of Edinburgh, thinks that the idea of robots entering the market was already impending, and this will just bring it closer.
As with everything new invented, there always seems to be a complication. Robots entering the real world will a historic event. Hopefully, us humans won’t go over our head and end up giving too much intelligence to robots, because the last thing we need is a robot rebellion. We have all seen the movies. Chances are, we are going to get wiped out. But the question is, how will your average Joe react to a robot standing on their doorstep, delivering him a package? Not everyone watches the news, so he will be in for a great surprise. Otherwise, humans will probably adapt to robots and become an everyday item in school and at homes. But like I said, we have to make sure a robot rebellion doesn't begin. Unfortunately, the only way we prevent that is if we actually do things on our own. For some reason, we humans have just become really lazy, and the chances of this occurring are really slim. Oh well, maybe we should just become robots ourselves, so that the robots don’t rebel. Except just keep our brain, so that we can still consider ourselves human, even though that means removing emotion from us so that we don’t go insane and kill ourselves. Because being part robot and part human obviously solves our problems, am I right?

    1. I do feel that people are very addicted to technology as well. They keep making and improving our technology so that our lives may become easier. This is helps contribute the laziness that has contributed to our society just like you stated. However, I do believe that people wouldn’t be shocked of having robots doing their tasks. We already have so many machines already doing things for us such as using a computer for typing an essay instead of writing it out. I believe that as technology advances, people are enthusiastic in having the next great thing. Therefore, I believe that people would be thrilled to get a robot that can drive for them instead of driving themselves. This is because our current society keeps developing things to make life easier but, that means we become lazier in doing out own work. People have been already replaced by machines because this new technology does the work more efficiently then people do. This can cause many people to lose their jobs. Even though it is great that we are creating new things, people can become lazy and our society will be run by robots.

    2. This brings up my fear of a robot take over - sometimes I feel that technology is smarter than humans (ever see "I, Robot"?)

    3. I've seen "I, Robot". It was really good.

    4. Hello Cousin, after reading the article, it surprises me that i have not heard of this at all. But it would be quite interesting to see robots deliver me package or so. Since robots are designed to accomplish perfect actions, or it's what ideally represents, then i wouldn't mind a robot handling a package for me and delivering it to me. But then again, as what Monica said, there already people out there that lost their job due to these machines being more efficient in jobs. For example car companies create hundreds of cars in less than an hour with the help of the new technology and machines we have now a days. But then again machines can turn around against human kind since they are obviously be recognized as better than us humans. Overall, the idea is great, but if it gets out of control, it could be very consequential to humans.

  6. I choose the article “Biden, in Japan, Calibrates Message, and Over Tension with China. It is affecting and involves U.S, Taiwan, Japan, China, and South Korea. There is this air space that is claimed by all these countrys.China is declaring its there air space and is sending there navy into it and other country’s airspace. If any planes enter they will be shot down. This is happening now it started last week. This is taking place in the East China Sea. This event is unfolding horrible because it might lead to war. This is news worthy because the U.S will have to defend Japan if China attacks. There for causing a brand new war.
This could majorly change Earth’s society. For example if china attacks or starts a war with Japan, this could majorly affect the economy. It could raise the prices for things like clothes and car extranomicly. It would also make the U.S and South Korea to allied with Japan and help them. This would happen because after ww2 Japan, the U.S, and South Korea signed a treaty saying if one of them go to war the others would help. That’s the same way with China, Russia, Taiwan, and North Korea. So if China and Japan go to war all these countries will go to war and instantly ww3 will start.

The thing that is involved in this news article is the new official brazuca ball that will be use in the world cup. This new official ball was unvieled on tuesday. The world cup will take place next year, 2014. This year this ball will be used in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuiaba, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manuas, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador, and Sao Paulo. I think this article is news worthy because people who are realy interested in soccer matches and the world cup may want to know new details about the ball, types of cleats, and days of matches.
Since this ball is being used in the world cup many people buy it. Its impact on the future is since people will buy this ball the money goes to FIFA. Since FIFA gets the money they will be receiving like an help for future soccer fields, paying refs, gettinng ready for world cups and making for teams. Since the ball may inspire people to watch games it will make them learn new skills and learn how to do different formations.

The level of magnitude that the world cup hosts full of amazing players and overwhelming teams explains that it is a popular ball. Just think, the brazuca ball has a very unique design and imagine it being at the your feet at this instant it does have a great feeling it is the feeling of passion for the sport of fútbol (soccer). Indeed, the money may go to a good cause and i admit that i am looking foward to purchasing this ball in the near future.

  8. A tremendous actor over the weekend has passed away doing something he not only filmed on camera but something he loved to do out of the movies. Paul Walker died this past Saturday in a horrendous way but doing the thing he loved, driving. Paul was reported to be riding as a passenger with a good friend Roger Rodas. As the two drove a popular road for drag racing still at speeds unknow they swerved off the road hitting a tree and a lamp post. According to officers of the investigation the 2005 Porsche was traveling at about 45 mph. Reporters on the scene questioned that statement arguing, how the lamp post they had hit was split in two and there would be no possible way a car going that speed could break a post in two.

Toxicologists say that the earliest they can get a report on the bodies for drunk driving is on December, 5 2013. If the two men were considered to be driving under the influence the entire view on this subject will change from people mourning his death to his cast and crew being at the scene of the crash and supporting the investigation and helping both Paul’s and Rogers family. Now press is beginning to question whether or not it was a slip up from the driver or a mechanical problem within the car. Whether or not it was it was a tire blow out or faulty wiring. In any case that Saturday we lost a good actor, a loving father and a dedicated car driver and lover.

  9. Paul Walker, notorious for his Fast and the Furious movies, died Saturday in a horrific car accident in Southern California at the age of 40. It is believed that Robas, a professional driver who raced on a team with Walker, was driving the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT when, while going at extremely high speeds on a wide road, notorious for people racing along it. Irony pangs the fans as his roles in Fast and the Furious often shown of him narrowly escaping death in accidents, and in the newest movie, his beating death in an accident eerily similar to the one he died in. He and his friend were on their way from a charity event.
It is obvious as to how this made the news. Paul Walker, not only a great and famous actor, was a beloved and selfless, opting to donate money to charities and organizations around the world. It was said that a soldier who was trying to buy a ring for his soon-to-be wife but couldn’t afford the excessively large price tag (Said to be $10,000, but it is doubtful), was in the same jewelry shop at the time Paul Walker was. When the man realized he couldn’t pay for it, Paul told the jeweler to put it on his tab. Paul paid the entire price.
We are not only losing an actor, we are losing a humanitarian, an amazing soul. Society isn’t losing a rich, self-obsessed actor that only donated to charities for tax purposes. We are losing a person who is a great example of what all humans should be. It could be said we learned from this experience. We learn that even the most famous of stars are not immortal, that everyone dies sometimes. Sadly, at this young of an age is devastating, truly. But, no matter what, we have memories of his life continue on with. That, and a copy of every movie he starred in on Blu-Ray.

Although, you did not mention his rise to stardom and although not a required element in the response it would have been nice to mention how he got to were he was when he sadly passed, because it did mention it in the article under subtitle "Box Office Success". I did however, really enjoy how you focused on his charitableness. It is great to see actors who care about others and not themselves *cough Lindsey Lohan* because their are a lot of them, and I enjoyed that you wrote about that beautiful aspect of his life. 10. In this article by Michael Schwirtz called FOR NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT, MORE DIVERSITY AMID TENSION was published on December 4, 2013 in New York City. 242 recruits at the New York City Fire Department training academy, but out of all the groups this one stands out the most. This group completed all 18 weeks of training necessary. This particular group of recruits is nearly 90% white, and 62% of them are minorities. The lead was that generations of firefighters have endured this rite of passage. Some of the recruits are older that others, while some had struggles that they were going through.
And for those that got the jobs get a pay package that rises from $100,000 after 5 years to about $43,000 in the first year. The goal is to make the department about 148 years old. The department has also been trying to create a new entrance exam and its hiring practice. Judge Garaufis was the one that ordered them to make a new entrance exam. 11. Caran Johnson, a mother and wife of Craig Johnson had no idea it was in fact her husband who died in a terrible car crash. Trooper William Finn was tweeting about the car crash he was investigating. Caran is one of his followers and was worried because her husband was on Vancouver’s interstate 205 and while she was trying to contact him to see if he was okay, her husband was unresponsive. The tweeting between Caran Johnson and Trooper William Finn went on around 2:00 to 3:50 pm on Wednesday, December 4th 2013. How the crash happened was a car was going northbound when it spanned the grass median into the southbound lane, hitting a pickup truck, right on. The tweeting started when Caran tweeted “this accident sounds horrible," @ 2:01 pm. Then, Finn tweeted,At 2:11 p.m. "Vancouver - SB 205 @ Padden - Fatality collision. WB Padden to SB 205 is closed. Right lane SB 205 also closed in area. Use alt route!" From there Finn’s follower Caran Johnson, seen his tweet and started asking him about the accident, getting more and more worried about her unresponsive husband. She eventually found out her husband was the fatality in the car crash and @ 3:50 pm Caran tweeted "it's him. he died,". This article is newsworthy because it is interesting and shows how the internet can the article shows how the internet can really change someone’s life. Caran Johnson found out off the internet her husband died and used a chatting site which helped her figure that out. Why I chose this article to write about was because I was interesting in finding out what the title meant by live-tweets husband’s death. The article is newsworthy because it is also about a chatting website something a lot of people use and find interesting so that was why they would click or read about this tweeting related article.
The issue of this news article in relation to students and society today is that it is about the internet. Students after reading this article may feel compelled to tweet about stuff instead of just telling people face to face. Social interactions between humans now-a-days have slimmed down because there are so many ways to chat without seeing someone face to face. Society after reading this article may feel compelled to tweet about something to because the internet is addicting and people find it fun to tweet. Even though I do not have an account on any chatting website I am sure that after reading this article if say I had a twitter account, I would probably start tweeting about something stupid just to tweet. Society is growing away from talking face to face and this article only proves that with a real life crisis death portrayed off the internet. The larger impact of the event/topic is the event took place in real life but got spread as news to other people such as Caran Johnson through twitter and the news article which I learned about it myself. People will learn about how this person had no idea she was actually tweeting about her husband when she was tweeting about the car crash she heard about. People should really be careful with what they say on the internet because they may never know who or what they are talking to or about. People after reading this article may take a second glance before they post their next tweet. If people are going to tweet about this man’s death they should learn to console his wife and children instead of bashing them like some people would. That is what I think people should learn from this article. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/05/us/washington-twitter-husband-death/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

It effects because there are still US troops in South Korea which is close to where the action is unfolding. Also we can learn from these events as they can effect us in the future by developing into something more like a war that we might need to get involved.

  14. On October 26,an elderly US veteran Merill Newman was taken off a North Korean Plane, and was detained by the authorities. He was accused with espionage against the country. Over the weekend, he has been deported from the country. Vice President praised North Korea for releasing Newman, while on his three country Asian tour. Now, Newman can got back to his family in the US, who have been petitioning for his releasever since his capture. On Nov. 9, North Korea released a video of Newman reading off 4 pages of his “apology”. It is believed North Korea wrote this for him, as it contains many instances of grammar errors and broken English.

From this article, we can learn about North Korea. We learn how North Korea is paranoid of who goes in and out of their country, and, really, is just a child crying for attention. In the future, society can learn how to deal with North Korea, and be able to broker agreements with the country.

In Australia Tasmanian devils are threatened because of a facial tumor. The facial tumor is a parasitic cancer that can be passed by biting and feeding off the same carcass. The facial tumors prevent the Tasmanian devils from eating. Therefore causing them to starve to death. 80% of Tasmanian devils have contracted the disease, and the devils die within 6 to 9 months of contracted the disease. If scientists do not find a cure for the facial tumors the Tasmanian devil population will be extinct within 10 years. Tasmanian devils are being bred in captivity so they can preserve the species.
Students and society need to know about the article because a species may become extinct. Tasmanian devils are also very important to science, they help scientists find out more about old diseases because they have existed for a very long time. The cancer that the Tasmanian devils have is very similar to the cancer that some humans may have. If scientists find a cure for this cancer they may find a cure for all cancer.

The more people that know about it, the more research will be done. Hopefully if enough support is put behind it, we can save the Tasmanian devil.

This article is taking about a new machine called the BSD-2000. It is a machine developed to treat people with cervical cancer to severe to use chemotherapy to heal. The different thing about this device is that it was not fully tested and did not need the required amount of data to send it out into use. This is because companies have little incentives to use products like this that help a small group of patients, such as what this machine is made for, and the product only needs to show probable benefit. This article affects anyone with cervical cancer who is too ill to get chemotherapy. The BSD-200 may be an alternative option of treatment that may prove affective at healing them. Also, this article affects any hospitals or companies that are medically related because they may want to by one so that they have the option for their patients. Also this product can affect the F.D.A and their credibility and how smart their choice to approve this device was. The device was created in 2011, but this article was written on December 3rd, 2013. The article talks about the current affects and thoughts on the device that was approved two years ago. The machine has been distributed in the U.S. although the article does not give specific states that bought this product. At the end of the article though, it mentions a BSD Medical which is in Salt Lake City that made the BSD-500, but which was not successful and did not get supported. The events in the article unfold just by stating what the machine is and how it got approved. It hen talks about how there are new studies being forced to be used for it to prove its safety, but not effectiveness. Then the article talks about how it works. This event is not a step by step process of an occurrence but an informative piece about a machine made for cancer that is now being questioned. This topic is noteworthy because it gives people the knowledge of a machine that may cure cervical cancer and anyone with it can get treatment. Also it shows new steps in technology, but also shows how certain products can get approved by the F.D.A without studies of safety and proven effectiveness.
This article is important to society because it involves a treatment for cancer. Cancer is such a popular subject and is well known and everyone cares about it and its affect. The article mentioning a device that may heal a severe cervical cancer is important for people to know. Also I is important for society to know that certain medical treatments can be approved by the F.DA without proof of effectiveness or safety. Society should know about this and learn from it, to be more careful of treatments.

    1. Its future implications are that the device can be completely approved and proved that it works well and safely. This can lead for a future device that can safely are always cure severe cervical cancer, and maybe even develop to help out with other forms of cancer as well. It has a bright future as a product to help out the fight against cancer, and lets hope that it isn't ruined by lack of care for safety and thought into its efficiency.

There is always an abundant of information available in the newspaper, or online news websites. Something interesting that is gathering attention for everyone is the article on “USA Today.” The article was stating that North Korea released a detained U.S tourist. They supposedly had seized the man because they thought that he was a threat. But after holding him, and gaining more information about him they realized that he wasn’t a threat all. Even though the man was once a veteran, they decided to release the man because he not only apologized, but also because of his age (85) and his medical conditions. He was released, and was in China on Saturday. He states that he is very happy to be home again.
The article was a very important and vital article because, in modern times lately, there has been a lot of conflict between North Korea, and the USA + many other countries. Also, due to the fact that North Korea, has a much more strict and hostile government, it was very surprising to know that they would release someone who they once considered a threat. It also important to beware what is going on not only in our country, but around the world in general because even through we live as if divided we are all connected and we are what makes the human race. With that being stated as good as it is to know how North Korea handle this situation, it brings up many questions. Questions such as “Why did they do it?” or “ Are they going to use this experience to convince the world that they aren’t bad?” There is only one way to find out, by reading the article.

In this article foreign jihadists are using safe houses in the southern border of Turkey to cross into Syria. Both the jihadists and the Syrian government are involved. The jihadists are trying to sneak into Syria to destroy the Syrian revolution. This article was published December 7, 2013, but the events have been going on for the past three months. It is happening in the Syrian/Turkish borders. The events unfolded by Jihadist not wanting the Syrian revolution to continue. This article is newsworthy because it is important that everyone knows what is going on in the world.
The issue the article has in relation with students is the article doesn't effect the students right now. Right now students have no need to worry about what the article is talking about, but in the future we could have and most likely will have similar problems closer to home that could effect us all and society itself. In the future we might be worrying about similar events close to US borders that could endanger our lives. The larger impact of this is it could change future governments and cause many deaths. People can learn from this by knowing what not to do in the future.

  20. The article I chose was http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/08/us/in-mass-attacks-new-advice-lets-medics-rush-in.html?ref=us. This article talks about letting the medics take more care of mass attacks. This article involves middle school students and the gunman. The gunman who entered the middle school, shot two people and then were sent to the ambulance. It also talks about medics having to get there faster to save more lives and prevent them from dying. The primary people to arrive should wear armor such as a vest, and be escorted by police officers. The main focus is that police and SWAT members if needed should come a lot quicker becuase other kids' lives being risked. This school shooting event occured in October at a local middle school in Washington. This is a newsworthy news topic because it is talking about people's lives. The officers clearly need to be faster and be on top of that issue because more lives could be in danger.
This news article relates to students and society due to a gunman being loose in a local middle school and shooting and killing two innocent children. It is important for students to be aware of this event along with officers in the town to make this neighborhood safer. Less lives will be taken if police and medics take action right away instead of waiting for other trained cops, SWAT, etc to make it to the scene. Every minute counts and you never know what can happen and who's lives are on the edge. By ambulances and cops coming late or not entering the school as soon as they can, they could possibly be killing others without even knowing. It's a wild world out there and people should be careful and understand what's happening in their environment or around the world becuase anything could occur at anytime.

Who this article is about is people with autism. The article talks about how in Pasadena at a research place called Caltech a breakthrough has come through suggesting that behaviors associated with autism are influenced from gastrointestinal issues that can be treated with probiotic therapy. This even took place December 6, 2013 in Pasadena at eight twenty three in the morning. Researchers at Caltech used a mouse model of autism and injected mice with “good” human bacteria called Bacteroides fragilis, that can treat a “leaky gut”, not only did the GI issue decrease, but so did the autism symptoms in the mice. Neuroscientists and biologists at Caltech hypothesize that the behavioral issues on the autism spectrum can be influenced by the GI issues. This research was published into the issue the journal “Cell” online, and it talks about the first study that demonstrates how the changes in gut bacteria can influence autism- like behaviors. This is newsworthy because it talks about how we can find a way to use probiotic therapy to treat the gastrointestinal issue in autistic people.
How this is in relation to students and society is that if we use probiotic therapy to help those with autism it can really help them in their school work to learn easily and be able to participate more with their classmates. How this is in relation to society is that it can help those with autism get a job and interact with other a lot more. Its future implications are that they will submit a proposal to the FDA as early as January to begin human- subject testing. The larger impact on the event/topic is that people with autism can be treated for gastrointestinal issues with probiotic therapy and it can increase their socialization with others and make it easier for them to learn. What people can learn or do with it is that they can research about probiotic therapy and those with autistic children can have them tested for gastrointestinal issues.

This article about Saturday Night Live and the recent uproar over its lack of a black female cast member. On Monday, the executive producer and creator, Lorne Michaels held auditions for a small group of female black comedians on the SNL stage. It is very unusual for a cast member to be added in the middle of the season, but with all the attention it is getting, it is better that it is done sooner. This will be the first black female cast member since Maya Rudolph left in 2007. This is newsworthy, because it shows the growing equality in the world.
This relates to school and society because it shows how equality is a growing presence in today's society. I think that in the future it will lead to a world that is far too politically correct. Is it wrong to not give someone a job because of their gender or skin color, yes. Is it a huge issue if a show does not have a person of every race and gender, no. While everyone is freaking out over the lack of a black female cast member, there is no Asian cast member, male or female currently on the show, and nobody seems to care about that.

  24. An unarmed student was anonymously shot five times at a traffic stop off campus by a campus police officer on the morning of December 6th, 2013 around 2 A.M.
MySanantonio explained that Robert Cameron Redus, a star student at the University of the Incarnate Word, was shot five times by a campus police officer during a traffic stop in Alamo Heights without being armed with any dangerous weaponry. On the other hand, Police Chief Richard Pruitt offered the most detailed information based from the recorder attached to the body of Cpl. Chris Carter, an officer with the university’s 17-member police force, that Carter had asked Redus to stop and put his hands on the truck after the student hit the curb. After both the ranger and the officer had a long “conversation”, Carter at some point took out his collapsible baton to protect himself, Redus managed to take the baton away, pin the officer against a wall and hit him several times on the head and arm with the baton, Pruitt said “During the struggle, there were a lot of blows that he received.” But according to Redus's neighbor, Haidarasl, he witnessed that the officer did not warn or command anything from Redus after the he hit the curb, being one of the most well-known student at the university, his friends after the memorial included that Redus would never even wish to harm anyone, even if he's intoxicated. It is highly questionable of why a campus officer would have the need to take out is patrol on an innocent student.
Spreading across the world, this article alarms many citizens whether any police department can be trusted to save the lives of people. It is far beyond unacceptable to take away an innocent life who’s a great son, a wonderful friend, a trustful brother, an intelligent student, and maybe one of the world’s most influencing leaders, based on this tragedy. Even if Cameron Redus endangered the officer’s life, having people supporting him such as his family and friends, by the end of the day he still doesn’t deserve to be slain. Supported by this article, it is helpful to know that not every department can be trust worthy. Ignorant people can work up to the career where they’re told to protect others, without actually having to give and care.

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/17/justice/philadelphia-high-school-shooting/

My news article is on a high school shooting in Philadelphia. This shooting happened in a gymnasium in a high school in Philadelphia. This event occurred today at around 3:30 p.m. There were three suspects and only one has been taken into custody. A 17 year old male took out a handgun and shot two people. The people he shot were both 15 years old and shot in the arm. One of the victims was male and one was female. One of the suspects was caught and brought into custody today at around 5:30. The other two are still being searched for.
This is very unfortunate that this happened. I am 15 years old and know people at the age of 17 pretty well. Hearing about this makes me want to look out for myself. It does not really scary to me but it definitely can be scary to other people. If you have a friend that is kind of iffy then I would understand why you would be kind of scared. This event may inspire people to got out and shoot somebody since only one out of three suspects have been capture. This high school shooting just adds to the number of high school shootings in America and that is very unfortunate.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/22/sports/soccer/english-fa-charges-nicolas-anelka-over-gesture.html?ref=sports&_r=0

My article is called “English F.A. Charges Nicolas Anelka Over Gesture.” It involves the English F.A, which is the body that governs all soccer related actions in England. This article also involves West Bromwich Albion striker, Nicolas Anelka, who is from France. The event took place on Thursday, January 16, 2014. The event is taking place in London, England. The events unfold when Nicolas Anelka used a racially or religiously abusive gesture as a goal celebration when he scored a goal for his club. The celebration has been regarding as an inverted Nazi salute. The F.A took about 2-3 weeks to discuss and look at the issue before stating their punishment, if any. The F.A then announced that Anelka will receive a charge and will be banned for at least 5 matches. This has become a big deal, since it occurred in one of the most-watched soccer leagues in the world. Also, British soccer has become more tight and strict about racist/offending signs over the past few years. This is a newsworthy story because many people were awaiting to see Nicolas Anelka’s charge because many people were offended by it. Or they just thought that it was disrespectful.
The issue has started much controversy. Nicolas Anelka has always been regarded as good man, alongside his amazing talent for the sport. So, it can create a lot of rules to be implicated for the future. Not only in England, but in the whole world. Society has been viewing it in many different ways. Some don’t think it was such a big deal. While, others have been personally offended by his “celebration.” Personally, I believe he shouldn't have been even attempting anything that could've caused the slightest bit of controversy. Which it did. A couple of lessons have been taught by this story. Nicolas Anelka has hopefully learned that he should keep his beliefs to himself, especially since it'll stir up problems. Other British players have learned to also be careful with the way they put their life out there to the world.

  28. On January 18, 2014 a man opened fire in a mall in Columbia, Maryland. The gunman killed two store employees and then killed himself. The police cannot find any connection between the gunman and the victims. The gunman was identified as a 19 year old skateboarder, Darion Aguilar. Aguilar opened fire in a skateboard store killing two employees. Police are still looking for a motive for the shooting. This shooting has impacted so many people all over the world. When news like shooting are aired on television stations, people all over the world are mourning for the victims and their families.
A sad article like this one have a major impact on society. There have been so many shootings in schools, movies, bars and malls lately that it is out of control. It doesn’t seem like people are safe anywhere in the world and it shouldn’t be like that. People should be able to go to the movies or the mall without worrying about someone randomly shooting people. I think that we need to do something to have stricter gun control laws or something to stop this terrible trend. It seems that the shooters always have some type of mental illness or problems that go back to when they were children. We need to do something to stop these terrible crimes so we can all feel safe again.
