Blog 18 - What Influences You (in Pop Culture)?

Due Thursday March 14th, 2013
Young people are highly influenced by popular culture. They attempt to define themselves on the basis of what they see on television, in newspapers and magazines, and in the movies. In fact, young people accept the values of popular culture as their own, believing that those values are central to their personal development and social acceptance.

Assignment: What elements of popular culture (movies, books, music, trends, fashion, television, technology, games, behaviors, etc) influence your identity? What have you borrowed (and from what source) to construct your attitude toward life and your personality? Explain what cultural trends do you reject? Give specific titles, details, explanations to receive full credit.

A minimum of 2 paragraphs for this topic is required ,with at least a 2-3 sentence response to another person's blog post--building upon it, disagreeing with it, or re-thinking it.

  1. A handful of people have been influenced by the elements of popular culture. Their identities could be created by the exposure of television, books, fashion, music, games, etc. A couple of these sources have helped to construct my personality and my attitude towards life. These are mainly fashion and music. Fashion played a large role in the shaping of my attitude because of the lesson it taught me. It showed that people should be able to express themselves in any situation because of how every individual should be accepted for who they are. Considering the way people dress could be one example on how people could do this. Before I was interested in fashion, I was not open to this thought. Music helps shape personalities and the way people think as well. The lyrics are the main key to music. Some could be based on joyful events and others could be based on a difficult lesson learned. Therefore, both of these aspects of pop culture help with the creating of my attitude.

In addition, although there are several elements of pop culture that are beneficial to the lives of people, others could have a disadvantage. These unprofitable elements are mostly games and television. For example, in video games there is a great changing that there would be inappropriate actions or verbal statements that occur while playing them. Because of this exposure of games, children under the recommended age limit could most likely be playing them without adult supervision. Television is applied in the same way. These are the main things that help create the attitudes of people of all ages.

  2. For our teen generation, we depend on music to get us through the bad and the ugly. Sometimes I like to think that the type of music a person listens to in some ways defines who you are. In all respect to some people this is not entirely accurate, but in some situations it could give away some aspects of your personality. Music has definitely been a huge part of my life and I can truthfully say there isn't a day that goes by where I'm not listening to music. Everywhere I go I have my iPod on me and my headphones in my ears. As soon as my headphones go in, the rest of the world is drowned out. I'm basically listening to music at every part of the day. When I'm running, in the shower, at night when I have nothing else to do, sometimes in school, with friends, and when I do homework. As others might be able to say, it could be the only thing that keeps them holding on. It's not just music. It's a lifestyle.

Every element of pop culture has its own pros and cons. Some may have more than the other. For example, technology in the long run has drastically improved America's education system and has given us the upper hand in creating a more exceptional and safe environment. Although, it has created a few problems between communication and being a social individual. Technology is increasing at a fast pace here in America. Teens in this generation become addicted to hand held devices which suffice for them as the proper way as which they should communicate and interact with the world. Cell phones such as the iPhone, have reached over seas and foreign countries. When being assembled and created, companies have given people the accessibility to text messaging and internet usage right from the cell phone itself. Being able basically do every a teen could want to do in their free time on their phone has created a generation of antisocial, addicted to technology, teens. Technology has it's perks, but the idea can easily be distorted into something more complex and hard to fix in terms of getting everyone back on the right track as how to properly communicate with people without abusing the access to technology.

  3. Popular culture always has influenced my identity once or twice in my lifetime. Music can make my feelings change from depressed to ecstatic. Or television fashion has sparked some ideas for my clothing choices. Another is my reading choices always come from whatever literature is popular. For example, one of my favorite book series is Hunger Games. I decided to get into this phenomenal trilogy because I saw the commercials of the movie and book through television, newspapers and a bunch of people talking about it. Popular culture influenced my favorite book. Another example is my clothing. A few of my outfit decisions have come from TV shows like Degrassi or Pretty Little Liars. I take the outfits the main characters wear and change them to be more like me. Then I create them out of my own clothes. My clothes and reading materials are a part of my identity and culture has influenced it all.

There are many ideas in culture that I have borrowed that have created my attitude towards life. My fashion and music have sent my views and personality on life. For example, fashion has taught me that people are allowed to dress however they want to. People should be able to express themselves through clothing. That’s my attitude towards clothing and popular fashion culture has influenced that. Along with clothes music allows people to express themselves, whether it is through dancing or singing or listening. The song and the reaction can tell anyone about their feelings. A trend that I reject is Twitter. I personally do not have an account. I find them pointless and really don’t understand how they work and what the point of Twitter is.

  4. Many teens now follow other people on TV or on magazines. Others have imaginative characters that they want to be. Many young kids want to be princesses or super heroes. Teens may want to be a celebrity on TV or on the Newspaper. I don’t really follow a celebrity. I may follow Selena Gomez occasionally, but my personality concentrates on music. I listen to music many people might not know but the music I hear always makes me happy and sometimes teaches me lessons. Many of the songs I hear talk about how you feel after a breakup of a friend or boyfriend/girlfriend. Others talk about life. How hard life is or how easy life is.

An example of a song that teaches about after a break up is this Spanish song called “Ya No Te Necesito” by Genio & Baby Johnny Ft. J-Quiles & Jay-Z. This song talks about someone that is telling his girlfriend that he doesn’t need her anymore and that he will keep loving her even though it was her fault they broke up. Another song that many people will know is “Who Says” by Selena Gomez. This song says that everyone is perfect and that everyone can achieve his or her dreams. Like in one line of the song it says,
“Who says, who says you're not perfect
Who says you're not worth it
Who says you're the only one that's hurting
Trust me that’s the price of beauty
    Who says you're not pretty
Who says you're not beautiful, who says?”
In this line it’s saying that no one can tell you you cant be something that you dream of being. Many songs can give you a message and many songs that I hear gave me that message. They changed and helped me in life.

  5. Music has always played a big role in my life. I remember our school’s band director saying, “Music is the unspoken word” and I couldn’t agree more with this statement. It’s amazing to think about how much depth and feeling a song can be and I think that’s what really makes music so powerful. I think everyone can say that they listen to music just about everyday and when they listen to it, it moves them and can even touch them emotionally. Music can set and alter the mood and there is always that special connection between music and the human brain. Personally, I can’t go a day without listening to music; I’m actually listening to music as I type this blog. I do believe that the type of music someone listens to describes his or her personality to a certain extent. Every one has different tastes and likes different things. The type of genre someone listens to makes him or her an individual, making everyone different and unique. Music has brought much diversity in a very positive way.
Another aspect of popular culture that contributes to my personality would have to be fashion. The one thing I absolutely love about fashion is how diverse it is. There are very modern styles of clothing and now clothing dating back from the 1950s and onward is coming back to style. I personally don’t dress a certain type of way. I think I have a very open wardrobe; a little bit of everything. I believe this describes me as a very open person and always willing to try something knew. I remember Rihanna stating in an interview, “When it comes to clothing and fashion, you have to be fearless and know that you are comfortable in what you are wearing.” So I would say clothing also plays a very big role when it comes to some ones personality. Clothing is the first thing most people look at when they meet someone new. One trend I do not follow, however, is video games. I don’t hate video games; I’m just not fond of them and personally stink at trying to use a controller. I believe there are other things to do other than sitting in front of a TV for a number of hours and just kill people. I don’t understand how some people can do that and not get bored.

  6. Every element of popular culture has influenced my identity. As a minor, my life is surrounded by the fashion trends, reality television, games and other things that come as a must in society. The distinguishing character or personality of an individual is greatly affected by the society they are surrounded by. I think the most influential element in my life has been technology. Over the past years, there has been so many different advances in technology overall that it has really shaped my identity. Because we are constantly being surrounded by the media, we allow it to create stereotypes, and change the way we act and think. Half of our identities today are completely based on what we see in the media of technology.

I reject certain trends within popular culture. For example, stereotyping through media. When a young girl sees a magazine with a model on the cover, she won't be thinking about the fact that the model has a make-up artist and Photoshop, she'll be thinking why she doesn't look the same. Teenage girls have been brainwashed by the media to believe that they have to look thin and beautiful, wear expensive dresses, put on makeup and that they have to fit this idealized image, or they won’t be happy or loved. This contributes to situations like false identity and completely identity change, which is something that should be avoided.

  7. The types of pop culture that are influencing the modern world definitely include technology such as the computer, telephone, movies and music. Music has changed a lot. We have been steering towards rap and techno music, which is unique. A lot of the rap songs have technological sounds in the backgrounds, and almost all instruments in the bands are electric. It has changed the world completely. The computer has also been a great tool and item of culture that has influenced people. People do not rely on themselves nearly as much for information because they can just go on the internet and find it. They don’t have to bother writing things down anymore from the places they get information anymore because they can just save it in a Microsoft word document now.

This is something that occurs every day. Homework assignments are assigned on the computer a lot, such as blog posts. These types of things are typically done on the computer. Lab reports, essays, all types of things can be done much easier on the computer than by hand. These things also affect me in my life. Technology is affecting everyone, including myself. It’s not uncommon to do things by using technology. If you are not caught up on the latest technology, than you are behind in life and work. People can now do a lot of work from their smartphones. These types of phones are helping people in their everyday life.

  8. It is amazing to see how much pop culture is able to influence someone’s life and personality. For example, for me music, sports, and videogames are a very important aspect in my life. I am also confident to say that my attitude and identity reflect that. My interests reflect on the videogames I play for example, I play a lot of science fiction and sports videogames. I also enjoy sports and love science fiction. Sports also allow me to care about them in a professional aspect as well. I am constantly checking scores and statistics of teams and also checking how my favorite teams are playing.
Some trends that I reject are associated with social media. The only social media website that I really use is twitter. I am not a fan of having every social media out there because I feel there is no need. The only reason that I have a twitter is because I wanted to have at least one social media account and twitter is the only website that I do not find boring. I know that when I want to get a job that is one of the first things that companies look at and I feel as though having too many would just hurt my chances of receiving that job.

  9. Pop culture has and will continue to have a huge impact on the age of adolescents. At this age everything around a person has some type of impact on any area of their life. Pop culture has been an influence in a few different ways; however, your identity is exactly what you want it to be. Most people would agree that their identity is identical or has the same idea as someone or something they “look up to”. The latest trending topic, in other words, tends to be many peoples individual “trending topics” as well. In my own experiences I take music and fashion of the latest pop culture styles and make them into my identity. Whether it is in magazines, peers, or famous icons, new pop culture styles out impact my own personal styles adding a trendy yet unique style of clothing. Furthermore, music has an even bigger impact on my identity. Music has the ability to speak in words we cannot come up with on our own; everyone situation seems to have a song that goes right along with it. Music tastes gives off what kind of person is deeper than what can be seen on the outside.
Moreover, although pop culture can have a very good impact on society and provide a start to the identity of teens especially, it can also have a negative impact. Things such as violence on video games and bad examples of “fun” and the “normal” thing for young adults to do on television are providing bad starts to an identity. Considering this can have such a great impact on peoples identities, it’s important to only provide the good ones.

  10. Today, Pop Culture can be considered one of the main things making an impact on our younger generation. Almost all teenagers say that they would be lost without being able to listen to their favorite music, watch their favorite movie, or have access to modern technology. All of these types of Pop Culture have impacted the younger generation of our society one way or another. As for me, I know I would be just as lost as the average teenager without some of these perks of Pop Culture. For instance, whenever I have writers block, there is always a particular song that I can listen to that clears my head, and keeps me from stressing out. That song is, “A Whole New World,” from the Disney movie, Aladdin. If I was not able to be able to listen to this song, I am sure I would stress out a lot over school work. Instead, I develop a positive outlook on my work. Songs that are able to relieve stress are one of the reasons why Pop Culture influences my attitude.

Not only am I able to use the musical aspect of Pop Culture to shape my attitude, I am also able to use the technological aspect of Pop Culture to help construct my identity. Technology is advancing at an extremely rapid pace, and it is becoming harder and harder to keep up with it. I try my hardest to stay up to date with all the new technology. However, as I learn how to use the new technology, I also begin to grow a dependence on it. This may not be the most healthful thing. By this I mean that I believe, along with myself, our generation depends too much on technology. For instance, if I was supposed to write a paper strictly using books, I would most likely fail. Since I am so used to using the internet to research, I would not even know how to begin to look for information in a book. So, along with having a positive influence on me and our generation, Pop Culture also some negative effects.

  11. Pop culture to me means the current interest of the bulk of the people. It is an extremely influential topic to the current generation. In my time, I have seen very well behaved and respectable person to becoming something they are not all from something they saw or heard. An example of this could be forms of music or fashion. More violent types of music such as screamo, rap (explicit) and many others can influence somebody in many ways. With so many different forms of pop culture that are out there for people to access, nobody can be true to themselves for they get their true identity from many different sources all gathered up.

My personality is quiet eccentric because of my many experiences that I have had in life. From music, to video games, to videos, to movies, to actors, there are too many sources of influence to count. Although, my main influences can be narrowed down from many other influences. My top three influences on my personality can be applied to the way I walk, talk, play guitar or even go about making some occasional jokes. In means of personality, I have been told that my personality, including my comedic ways, can be taken from my favorite YouTubers. YouTubers such as: eatmydiction1, Kootra, Simon and Lewis from bluexephos and Criken very much influence the way I am. This comes naturally to me while some other influences are not even in effect because I try to hard to be like them, or simply because I don't think that they would work for me. Those influences that I do not apply to myself can be from people such as Stevie Ray Vaughan. While I do not act like him out and about, on stage performing he is a huge influence to me. That brings me to how my music influences me on epic proportions. There is no clear explanation of how my music influences me besides that fact that I do not dress accordingly to the current style or fashion. For some reason, me and anyone else that like music from around the times that I like, wear clothes that somewhat resemble that era. People today are very much influenced in what they wear from what they hear or see. Big Rap stars such as Adolescent or "Small Wayne" influence his fans with the way he dresses (Hence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMwhl4IrPNc). On top of everything, my personality branches off mainly from my Dads personality. I act very much like he did when he was a kid and find that we relate very well.

  12. Popular culture gives great influence in the lives of many young adults. Some people incorporate movies and music into their lives as others use fashion and technology. Personally, I turn most towards music, books, trends and fashion. Books have a lot of ideals about morals and how to handle certain situations. One example of this is the book "My Sister's Keeper". The family in the book allowed me to understand how complicated death becomes but, also the most optimistic way to handle it. Music, trends and fashion occur on a daily basis. These things keep me on track and allow a variety of changes so that nothing in life stays too stationary for a long period of time.

The identity of a person molds through their environment and the things throughout their life. There are many different aspects that reflect me, as there are many that I could not accept. Certain pop culture ideals that I reject are cosmetic beauty and impractical goals. Teenage males and females feel like they are expected to live up to a certain expectation that they may see in celebrity lifestyles, or in the media. This completely crushes many people’s self-image and doesn’t allow them to be comfortable in their own skin. Personally, I encourage more optimistic attributes. Role models, quotes, words and photos shape much of my thoughts and emotions. For example, the quote “Never get bitter, just get better” is a quote that I constantly contemplate. This helps me understand and move past many situations, as photos of simple or complicated things remind me of the balance of all things in life. With a combination of all of these different parts, I come up with my own mixture- or my own identity.

  13. Todays kids are influence by pop culture. Kids are influence by this culture because of the lifestyle famous people give as an image of. Kids want to be like their idle's by dressing, acting, and just being like them. Teenagers mostly look up to big pop stars like Beyonce. Teenagers like the pop culture music and way of living. Teenager usually tend to dress like each other in a way and are influenced by pop culture to dress the way they do.

Pop culture influences kids everyday by music, technology, and advertizement. Like Sydney said, "Teenage girls have been brainwashed by the media to believe that they have to look thin and beautiful, wear expensive dresses, put on makeup and that they have to fit this idealized image, or they won’t be happy or loved". she is right about that because, today girls think they have to look like Victoria Secrete Model to be beautiful but, in reality guys don't really skinny girls but, girls that are in shape. Sometimes girls even go Anorexic to try and lose weight to look beautiful to others.

  14. Many people’s lives, including mine are influenced by popular culture. For me, the most influential categories of popular culture come from television and technology. For instance, almost all teens, including me, watch television on the daily basis. Television influences me mostly on the sports channels. I see pro athletes playing on T.V, which influences me to try harder and work in my sports career. This is one of many ways that popular culture (television) influences my life.

In addition, technology also is a form of popular culture that has an impact on my life. Technology has brought along many things, such as cell phones, computers, and internet access. Without these things, I feel my life would be much more boring and I would have a very difficult lifestyle. Therefore, there is yet another way of how popular culture (technology) has an impact on my life. However, I do not agree with some of the things popular culture has to offer. For example, I reject certain T.V shows that are degrading or display bad influences and inappropriateness towards its audience.

  15. In today’s world many types of popular culture influences the newer generation and myself greatly. Everything we hear in our music, see on television and see other people doing always have an influence on us some way or another. For myself, many types of music and musical artists have all influenced my identity to make it the way it is today. For example, I’ve grown to like songs and musical artists that aren’t that popular because of how different they are from the ones that are very popular and famous. Although, even though they aren’t popular that doesn’t mean they haven’t affected my identity in some way. These songs and musical artists have played a major role into making me who I am when it comes to my identity and popular culture taking effects on my true identity.

With many things influencing my identity there are things within popular culture and trends that I do reject. For instance, some things I reject in my identity consist of certain types of music, musical artists, clothing, and television. Basically something from every category from popular culture. Everybody has their own personal feelings towards popular culture and they base their identity off of what they enjoy and what they do not enjoy. They may like or dislike different types of music, different television shows, clothing, and or trends that influence everyone’s behavior. Therefore, the certain things I reject in popular culture affect my true identity to make it the way it is today.

  16. Popular culture influences people in so many different ways, both negative and positive. Whether it is music or television, most people let it affect who they are and how they act. For example, if a child decides to watch a movie that may have too many curse words in it then they may come out thinking it is ok to curse at such a young age. It influenced them in such a way that now they follow after by using the same words. Secondly, most children especially teenagers, let celebrities, rappers or singers affect the choices they make. It today’s world most teens find inappropriate things for their age more appealing. Music that expresses getting locked up or has profanity in it can influence teenagers. Some may start to think the cool thing to do is join a gang or do drugs just because that is what is presented in the lyrics or movie.

The popular culture that I reject is music, when profanity or inappropriate things are involved. It makes me feel uncomfortable in the way they come across. I sometimes like to view myself as a conservative person but when I hear such things as that it affects me. I do not care for what those rappers or singers have to say but at my age I do not like hearing about that. Fortunately, I do not let most things influence me too strong. If I do something stupid most of the time it is because I chose to do that stupid act. Popular culture that might affect me though would be fashion or movies because it may change my view on things or my appearance. These things would be examples of what may affect me.

  17. Popular culture such as TV-shows, music, fashion, trends and many more medias have influenced the behavior or attitude of teens all around. It has either affected them or in a way helped them define who they really are. In my case it has influenced the way I'm but in a positive way. One of the types of pop culture that has influence me is television, in a way that it has given me a foundation on how the world can be. For example, the movies that I see on TV helped me see how the actions of people can affect themselves or others and how certain situations have a positive or negative outcome. In a way it has helped me see how others can be and how I can deal with certain people.

The way fashion and stereotype influences teens is more than teachers being able to teach students about certain topics. Teens go all crazy about trying to wear the stylish clothes and having the smallest waist (for girls) and the six pack (for guys). In this way it affects the life of the teenagers by making them do what they can to get the money so that they can buy clothes instead of them using the money for something more useful. Popular culture can either affect or be a positive influence to someone it just depends how teens decide to apply what they seein their life.

  18. Pop culture influences people of today. Whether the elements of popular culture influence people in a negative or beneficial way, they are still being influenced. I can say that certain elements of popular culture do influence me in everyday life. The two main elements of pop culture which influence my identity the most would be music and fashion. Music can shape the way people think about situations and affect one's mood. The part of music which allows it to be influential is the lyrics. They can be very basic or similar to a poem when written. Fashion allows a person to state how they think of themselves. A person who wears outfits which makes them seem put together and ready for any occasion, give off the impression that they care about how others view them.

People should be influenced by popular culture in moderation. When it comes to popular culture, there are beneficial and negative elements. An example of a beneficial influence from popular culture would be books. Books are an opportunity for a person to have knowledge at their fingertips. A negative influence from popular culture would be technology in the form of video games. Today, there are a wide variety of violent video games for all ages. Young children might adopt the mannerisms of the characters in the game such as being violent.

  19. Pop culture has had a great impact in todays society, from the way people dress to the way people act. There are cetain factors that play a role in what influences people and how certain people take this. Pop culture has had an influencein my life, the music that i listen makes me who i am the lyrics and the way the beat flows in a way defines me. I m not saying that the music and the lyrics is what makes me but in a way has had a impact in my life at least a little, in other cases there are kids who listen to what they do and become different people. They may like the clothes the artist is wearing or the way the person is acting, in a way could have a positive affect but at the same time could have a very negative outcome as well. Depending on what thy listen to you could see a person starting to talk differently, do things they wouldn;t normally do or maybe act a certain way in order to imatate the artist, pop other then that affect has the positive to bring joy to the world and bring the essence of rythm and movement to the world.

An artist who has had a positive imapact in my life would probaly be either Nas the Notorious even though all of his raps may not all be the most positive i picked out the ones thatare inspirational he tells kids to get up and do what you want. He tried putting out a message to the younger generation that life is not all about what you think it is hanging out with your friends, going out to parties, smoking doing drugs things that you dont need in life, but to go out be strong say no and set out to be what you want to be regarless of who you are the color of your skin or from where you come form.

  20. Popular culture influences people in so many different ways, both negative and positive. Whether it is music or television, most people let it affect who they are and how they act. For instance, almost all teens, including me, watch television on the daily basis. Television influences me mostly on the entertainment channels. If a child is not mature enough they might begin to act like these characters and most of the time this is not good.
Also, technology is always advancing. I love to see what new technology comes out because its interesting to see how fast the human population purchases these brand new items. The biggest technology producer is Apple. Its interesting to see how long it takes people to buy the new objects.

  21. Pop culture has an effect on me in a way, but not in a huge way. What I mean by this is that I don’t follow trends and stuff like that. Pop culture affects me by the music. For example, Hoodie Allen a rapper influences me in a lot of way. His music influences because this song mean something. For example, in one of his song he says “No Faith in Brooklyn!” this may not mean a lot to you but it does to me because this mean no one as faith in you but you have to have faith in yourself even though no one have faith in you.
On another note pop culture effect a lot on people. For example, the Jersey Shore influenced a lot of people to go out and get drunk and do stupid stuff. This had a negative effect on a lot of my and young generation. A lot of girls in my generation now act like the girls from Jersey Shore which is very trashy. To end this pop culture as both good and bad effects on people.

  22. Pop Culture effects teenagers in many ways. Pop tells them what to wear and not to wear. For example, if some famous person wears 2,000 dollars worth of shoes, somebody might ask there parents for them. If the parents say no the teenagers would act like babies. Some will cry and others might to into extreme rage. That's why pop culture can be stupid. You don' t need expensive thing to be cool and look nice. You be yourself to be cool and wear things that suit YOU.

But pop culture can also be good. Some music influence people to make there lives better. they tell you to make the right decisions. they also can tell you to have fun but to not go crazy.

  23. Pop culture may affect certain individuals. For example, I must say that pop culture influences my tastes. Certain fashion trends catch my interests. These interests usually involve clothing items or certain colors for articles of clothing. I recently got into pastel colors because of the fact that they are in now for the Spring season. I saw this in many stores that I shop at and in magazines advertising these colors. Many times trends do influence people in a positive or negative way.

Some trends I do reject because not all of them are my certain style. Some individuals have idols that they see on television and they may want to be exactly like that person. It's different for certain people. Some may be persuaded into buying things that they see on television or what they read in books or magazines. Pop culture does often have an influence on others.
