Blog 6: Propaganda as Persuasion

DUE TUESDAY OCTOBER 23, 2012
According to Wikipedia, propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes. Generally, propaganda is distributed in the form of cartoons, posters or visuals - and often has a political slant (but not always). During WWII, many cartoons depicted the Germans as evil and inhumane in order to paint the enemy as monsters.

For the blog response, select a piece of propaganda on a subject of your choice. Paste a link to the piece in your response for reference (since you can't post the actual picture). Explain how the piece is trying to use persuasion to convince the audience or the viewer. What emotions is it using? What language? Look at the image and explain how it relates to the message. Explain if the technique used is effective? or offensive? Sometimes propaganda is inflammatory on purpose, to cause anger so that people will discuss the subject. Are the images used recognizable - often propaganda references visuals that people are familiar with or they spoof previous propaganda (see the "We Can Do It" ones below). Think about the way the piece is trying to engage the audience: could the author have done things differently to get the point across.

Below (and above) are some examples of propaganda. You are welcome to choose one of them if you cannot find your own (just let us know which you are writing about). As always, the response should be 2 paragraphs.

This picture is Rosie Riveter who inspires women to work in factories during WWII. When people would see the propaganda they would be inspired to do something for their country. People who did not want to work would be determined to help the soldier in war when they would see the picture. Women have to do work so that man would have what they needed in the war is what they picture is trying to persuade the reader to do. Without this particular piece of propaganda the women population might have not been inspired enough to help out in the war.
This piece of propaganda of Rosie Riveter is effective because it inspired women to work. This picture is a good method because it pushes people to work for a common goal. This piece of propaganda was not meant to hurt or slander anyone. It was meant to inspire the women population to help out their husbands and sons across the ocean. This propaganda does not need to be changed in anyway because it engages people to do something.

This picture is a great example of propaganda. It shows both the effects of smoking and why it is very important to avoid it. Whether one smokes or not, everyone knows the consequences of smoking. It can cause yellow teeth, and even rot the lungs; which leads in to death or serious health problems. This picture shows a lung shaped ashtray. The ash from the cigarette represents how the lungs, over time, can grow bad and not work up to its full ability. The technique used here is no doubt useful. Another note worthy aspect of this picture is the simplicity of it. It uses no words or any type of description. It goes strait to the point.

The maker of this propaganda did a great job; I wouldn’t fix anything. Smoking becomes more and more of an issue each year. Many smokers, when buying a pack of cigarettes, totally look over the warning label on it. When they come across this picture, however, this might make them start to think about what they are doing to their bodies and even help them get a different point of view on this matter.

  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Sam

This picture of Uncle Sam is known by most of America. In this famous picture, Uncle Sam is persuading people to help out during the war, and give help to the hardworking soldiers. To make it all seem more serious, Uncle Sam is also pointing forward, as if to the person viewing the poster. The words “I want you for U.S. Army” is printed in bold on the bottom. Between Uncle Sam pointing at the reader, and the words in large, bold letters, the message is forceful and obvious.

I believe the makers of this poster did a very good job. The point is put across very obviously, and I’m almost positive most of us who see this poster will know what message they were trying to convey. I believe all this talk about having to help out really encouraged people to do so, too. This poster had a huge effect on people during the war, especially since 4 million copies of it were printed in just one year. This poster definitely helped during the war, and got many people involved.

  4. I am going to be explaining the propaganda picture with the slogan, “She needs her fur coat more than you do.”
This propaganda is using pity as its emotion. They show a picture of a harmless raccoon, looking like it is pleading to the world not to kill it. The picture says that we don’t need fur coats more than the animals we make them from. The animals are killed and ripped of their fur, which is cruel. It was very effective, because even I was sad, and felt bad. And I hate raccoon’s. They are just terrible, terrifying little creatures. Even this picture made me feel bad for it, so yes, you could say it was effective.
The propaganda really makes the world think about how these luxuries that we have are made. It shows the world that we don’t just make those fur coats out of nothing, there are animals that are harmed in this process. Therefore, the propaganda was very effective, and made so many words come out of just one sentence. The propaganda made people realize the cruelties that come about when fur coats and other luxuries are made. It makes people to ban the manufacturing of these fur coats because of the terrible things that happen when these things are made.

  5. The propaganda that is being used has to deal with the British army. The poster has the slogan “Who’s Absent? Is it you?” stated by a general of the army. The poster is using persuasion by asking people to enlist into the army. They are telling people they are absent from the army and they should come join right away. The emotion is coming through in a question. It seems to be strongly enforcing the idea of joining the army. The language is mostly (something ask for help). The image is of a general with a British flag on his shirt. There are soldiers in the background with a battle ground behind them. The general is pointing at the center which is symbolically pointing at the person reading the poster. It shows that the general wants people to join the army.

I feel this is not really effective propaganda. It does not really stick in my mind like other ones do. This poster is not really recognizable. It has not been seen before. It seems to be one that is not as famous. The author could have done some things to make it stronger. By using some other statement instead of the one they did use. The picture is really effective; however the slogan should be really stronger or maybe even rude. Sometimes posters whose statements are rude get more responses. The meaner poster may have had more men enlist in the army. This is one tip the author could have used to make the poster better. 6. http://frecklescheer.blogspot.com/2011/04/child-abuse-when-childhood-isnt-fun-so.html (picture 4)

This piece of propaganda is using facts, visuals, and emotions. Child abuse is a touchy subject for many people, and it can get many people extremely emotional. In this photo we see a girl who has been abused, watery eyes, and it looks like she has been crying. The propaganda is using the emotions of compassion, empathy, anger, and sadness. Words in this picture include: only, might, last, die. These are all words that trigger sadness and thought about things in the future. They will promote people to take action. The message of this propaganda is to make everyone aware of child abuse, and to ensure they report it. In the photo, the girl has tape over her mouth saying “Stop Child Abuse”. We also see engaging statistics and a footer that says Report Child Abuse. The image is incorporated completely in the message through the facts, language, and slogans.

When looking for propaganda I was immediately drawn to this photo. The facts added additional support to the heart wrenching photo. The girl looks bruised, tired and depressed. This allowed me to feel what she felt and to fully grasp the effects of child abuse. A picture like this will easily persuade readers to interact or have an opinion toward the ad. This image is a little inflammatory, asking the audience to act in their own lives, and to raise emotion on the subject. This propaganda seems to be original and I have not seen this photo anywhere else. The author did an incredible job of persuading the audience child abuse is wrong and it should be stopped. They could have included a hotline number for child abuse which some people would actually put into play. Otherwise, this photo was a great piece of engaging propaganda.

Propagandas are made for a purpose. The purpose of propaganda is to portray a serious situation is a comical but funny way. Some propaganda can be only one of these aspects and not be as effective. When someone can relate to propaganda, they will understand and take in the information given. In this propaganda, it is portraying a zombie apocalypse and how to go about it. In this type of apocalypse, it is important to conserve ammo in weapons because it is unpredictable the amount of conflicts you will run into.

This propaganda probably wouldn’t be taken seriously, although it does attract the eyes of gamers and fans. I find this poster entertaining to just know that there are imaginary scenarios that are all for fun and games. This poster is fiction and will most likely stay that way, it is mainly ment for display purposes.

  8. The picture I choose to use is the one with the slogan, “She needs her fur coat more than you do”. This picture is using appeal to the audience. When you look at this picture it is made for you to feel pity. In this picture it is a raccoon that looks helpless. The raccoon has on a sad face meaning that they need their fur. Animals are harmed for their fur that humans use as accessories to wear. I believe that this sign is very effective.

The technique that this picture uses is affective. It’s appealing to the audience’s emotion about killing animals for fur. Animals do need their fur more than we do. Animals such as the raccoon are helpless and don’t have any say in what happens to them. This propaganda is a sign calling for help. When reading this slogan I felt pity for all the animals that get killed for their fur. It doesn’t seem right.

The picture I chose was Barack Obama's "Yes We Can" motto. Though I am a Romney supporter, this picture is very inspiring. He is telling people that “we can make change”, which is a form of propaganda. The emotion is set to be very determining, being that we can make change.
In this picture, he is expressing the same as WWII. Anyone can make the change, but he is best. He is choosing to help people and stating “Yes, we can!”. He is influencing voters for change, like WWII. He may not change some votes with the picture, but quite a few people will.

This piece of propaganda illustrates a strong theme of feminism and patriotism. The poster tries to convince women to join the navy. It persuades the audience of women to be strong and to not underestimate their abilities. In this piece of propaganda, it is not using a questionable “maybe” type of emotion; its tone is more assertive in order to actually persuade women to join the United States navy. The image, formally known as “The Christy Girl” shows a woman happy and in navy gear. It shows that she still has a feminine side, but also stands for what she believes in perhaps being the United States.

The technique being used could be each effective and offensive. It could be effective because it may intrigue some women to go out in the world and take charge. It may convey those who feel they need a type of assertiveness in their lives. It could also be offensive be saying “BE A MAN AND DO IT”. This could be offensive because it somewhat defeats the purpose of the argument to get more women out to the navy. By saying ‘be a man’ it implies that only men are strong enough to make that decision. A alternative could simply say “BE A WOMAN AND DO IT”, implying that women in the world are strong enough to be in the navy and make that decision.

There are so many pieces of propaganda that can persuade the reader into doing something. For instance, many people know about the posters that try to influence citizens into joining the military forces. One of many of these posters says, “Defending American Freedom-It’s Everybody’s Job.” In my opinion, this is a very effective saying. I do not find it offensive at all, compared to other posters. On the poster, the image is a man dressed in red, white and blue, fixing his hat. This is one of the many things that make this propaganda poster effective, since the colors show the patriotism and persuasion necessary to influence the reader.

Some other ways this poster is effective is it’s language and emotion. For instance, by saying that it’s everyone’s job to defend America, this will hint, and hopefully persuade the reader to join the military, since it’s everyone’s job. Also, it uses dramatic tone and emotion. Aside from all of these effective aspects, I feel that there could be a little more emotion and exaggeration, to really convince the reader to do what the quote is saying. Therefore, by using the previously stated techniques, I definitely believe that this propaganda is very effective and persuasive.

  12. I choose the slogan that said, "She needs her fur coat more than you do”. This picture is well explained because its persuading you not to take the fur of harmless creatures. Many bears, foxes, wolves are being killed to make accessories for coats and other clothing. For example, there's a part in Macys that's a fur coat factory. Many animal lives are being taken away so it should stop.

This picture is telling you to not take away animals fur. The animals need their fur to survive the winter and fall. In the other hand, we are taking the fur of poor animals so we can stay warm during the fall or winter. When I read this I felt ashamed because many people, including me and my family, have fur coats. And we should respect everyone, especially animal. By not taking what's not ours. We wouldn't like it if animals took stuff away from us.

  13. The propaganda I chose is a 1960's peace poster that states, “Unite Against The War.” This propaganda poster is trying to show people in the wold that we can settle our problems without war and all we need to do is unite in peace and settle differences in a different way. This poster is not only trying to grab peoples attention who focus on solving problems through fighting but also focus on everybody as an whole. In order to have world peace we need the whole world to see not just a small group of people. The picture that goes along with the saying is a yin-yang. The yin-yang in Asian culture symbolizes opposites coming together dividing one another. Inside the yin-yang is a fist and a peace sign, meaning we can either take the violent path or the peaceful path, two very opposite paths, yet they mean so much to one another.
This image grabs the attention very quickly because of its intricate meaning behind the actual picture. Without the picture the quote would do nothing against anti-peace citizens. Peace is something we should all live in, and day by day we lose the very thing that brought us here as a nation in the beginning. Therefore, this propaganda poster is trying to get us to where we are able to get back to a peaceful nation and that is exactly what our nation and nations around us need.

The picture is from World War 1 attempting to persuade Irish men into joining the army. I found that this picture was a great example of propaganda. The picture is convincing for Irish people using a Sergeant as a persuasive technique shows that they really need people to join. To some, this picture could make them angry, but to most it would be a very discussed subject. The picture taps into the determination feeling. This picture makes people feel like they should contribute and be a hero.
The illustrator of this picture couldn't have doe anything differently. He tried to make it as specific and simple as possible, yet it remains persuading. I feel as though the author has got their point across clearly and effectively. The author's point was to join the army. I were to see this picture I would tell everyone I know and try to convince them to join.

  15. The picture I choose to use if the one with the slogan that says “Junk food should be increase and people should start eating healthier”. In my opinion this picture tells you that you need to start being careful about what you eat, to eat better so you can be healthier. People sometimes get sick and they don’t feel well thanks to the bad food that they eat contently.
Healthy food would make be stronger and feel better, and this picture it’s not showing that eating junk food is always bad, you just don’t have to eat it a lot, only a little and just try to keep it short. This picture is really effective; it makes you think how it damage you if you eat too much bad food .It’s there to show you that you can change that and be better.

The propoganda I chose says Whyeat one and not the other? and Choose Vegetarian with a picture of a duck and a pig. This piece of propaganda is trying to persuade the viewer to choose to become az vegetarian. They want people to convert to being a vegetarian to save the lives of animals that we do eat. This is a great piece because it grabs people's attention with the cute animals and bright colors. This gets their point across while interesting the viewer which makes the perfect peice of propoganda.
The emotion they are using is pulling on the heart strings. They are reaching out to the people with soft heartsthe adorable pictures appeal to viewers caring side. They are using a demanding voice telling the reader to become a vegetarian. Personally I think its a great piece of propoganda, but its not enough to make me give up my chicken nuggets or sausage and peppers.

  17. The picture I chose is the one talking about the mac computers, http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rIG3IGZB8OQ/UHxXnq_25CI/AAAAAAAAAOg/PJ6-vlcif-U/s1600/prop6.jpg this is basically saying that if you are a "real man" you should use a Mac computer. The picture fits really well with the message the author is trying to get to people for example there's a person and a foot, on that person's foot is Apple's logo and they are stomping Microsoft, in a way is kind of like peer pressure just because some other people are doing the author wants everyone buy a mac so they can all be awesome. The author is trying to persuade people into buying macs.

I think the author should have done this differently because it does seem a bit offensive to some people for saying that you're not a real just because you don't have a mac, it might also come of as underestimation because this author is saying that a person is less because they don't have a mac. I don't think they did a great job with that propaganda also because of how it's written some errors are made in the writing and people will obviously not buy from you if they think you are stupid or they see that your trying to tell them to buy a mac but you can't even spell. Also, not everyone can afford to have a mac. Last but not least, the author could have given a little more information, this is an opinion and not a fact, and not everyone will believe that. Overall the author could have done many things to get the point across.

  18. As any serious athlete would understand, one of the most impacting and memorable slogans that we hear almost every day of our lives is Nikes’ “just do it’ slogan. Nike follows the same idea of a short, simple, yet very effective few words to really grab the costumers’ full attention. Nike is known world wide for its inspiring, determined, self- motivated slogan “just do it”. This slogan can be interpreted and used in not only sports, although it is the main purpose, but with every aspect of life.
The slogan could not be described any more clearly; there’s not really any other way to describe it. Just do it; push yourself. No matter how tired you are, how hurt you are, how long you’ve been working, just do it. Anyone can use this slogan as motivation to succeed at anything they put there mind to, whether it be homework, studying, or perfecting a hobby of their own. This slogan has been proven very effective and favored by many people.

In this example of propaganda, there is a picture in the center of an American soldier holding a young foreign girl in old, tattered clothing. The poster reads, “She’s glad he’s there. Are You?” and then on the bottom there is a picture of an American flag and more text that states, “Freedom Matters”. This poster is basically propaganda used for the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. It arouses the question of freedom in other countries and whether or not U.S soldiers should stay in the Middle East. This poster supports the soldiers staying in the Middle East with the reason of protecting the innocent children that live there.

I feel as though this propaganda was very effective since it appealed to the audience’s emotions. Since the child that the soldier was holding was so young and tattered looking, people could have felt sorry for her. They wouldn't want her to be all alone without any protection/freedoms. They would want the American Soldiers to stay with her and protect her. If the child was happy, and dressed well, nobody would believe that she needed help. The physical appearances of the people in the poster help set the mood of the poster, making it more persuasive for the audience. For these reasons, the propaganda was a very effective poster.

  20. when companies want to advertized something they use the internet or TV. For instants, they use the media to get there adds out to the public. they use celebrities and athletes to show them enjoying and talking about how good the product is to make the people want to buy their product. Sometimes their products dont really do what they were promised to do. Such as, pills that make you loose weight, energy bars, and even energy drinks. Monster (an energy drink) says that their drink will increase your performance level in energy. The product works for a little then looses its power.

Athletes make energy and sports gear look very good. For example, big athletic companies make their products look like they are going to increase your performance on the field and on how you play. what make you performe well on the field. true hard work and practice that makes you performe like the best athletes. A piece of equipement doesnt make you a better player or the best. You are really the one who performce well out on the field not the product. For these, reasons the propaganda is not really telling you the truth like the Nazi's making posters of the Jewish making them look like bad people when they aren't

The picture I chose is propaganda towards Germany in World War II. This is a picture of Hitler biting on the Earth to show that he wants full control of the world. This was made to give people a better understanding of the problems and the dangers if Hitler is to succeed with his views and uprisings.
The language of this poster is that if Germany is successful then the world is in danger. The emotion that is being used the poster is trying to scare the viewer on what can possibly happen. This is very effective because this way people can be more involved in the war to help. I do not find this poster offensive. This image relates to the message by saying what will happen if Germany wins.

This picture illustrates propaganda in a form of nutrition. This piece is trying to persuade others to eat healthy and to “play their part” in the National Nutritional Program. It displays a background of the infamous Uncle Sam eating some type of food and then an additional picture of a family holding hands. The slogan says, “U.S. needs US strong.” The emotion used in this piece of propaganda is demanding, which displays that there needs to be a change in the United States.
The technique used in this propaganda is effective. Uncle Sam is famous for his “I Want You…” propaganda, so it creates an even bigger affect on this piece. It can motivate those viewing it to eat more nutritious food due to a familiar figure. In no way is this propaganda offensive because it isn’t calling out a specific group of people or making fun of anyone. There really isn’t any other way the author could get his point across. It is very straightforward and always has a clever slogan.

In this example of propaganda, persuasion is being used to convince the audience or viewers to purchase a specific shoe brand. In this case, persuasion is being used by containing a large, noticeable picture of an athlete. It also has an inspirational slogan added onto the poster. The slogan states, “impossible is nothing.” This statement makes people realize that anything is possible in life. This example was created in a serious manner due to the fact that there was a lack of humor in the slogan itself. In addition, the body language of the athlete presented shows the mood of the poster. With this in mind, the athlete is shown as a confident person. This fits the purpose of the slogan. He looks as if he believes in himself, which is what makes the slogan more persuasive.

The technique used with this example of propaganda was very effective because it helped get the main point across. Without having a picture of a person with a specific emotion, it would be more difficult for readers to understand the concept of this advertisement. In this piece, the image had recognizable characteristics. I personally was able to notice how the model was used specifically for this case in order to get the main point across without any hesitation. With this aspect already included in the Adidas advertisement, the author could not have done a better job with creating this piece.

  24. This picture shows Pepsi at its best. The creation of the propaganda here means Pepsi better than coke.By having the straw go into the Pepsi can fine, and It struggling to prevent itself from going it. Another way you can tell its coke without labeling it. Look at the colors. This so Pepsi can't get sued , if necessary.
This is actually effect in to ways. One being , consumers will want to buy Pepsi because , it shows in the picture it the better choice.Secondly threw humor. To some people it might be funny that the straw , is fighting the , request to go in.

    1. Avoid repeating the same thing. Focus on the colors and the images themselves.

This poster is a great example of propaganda. It shows a cat's face imposed over a road. It says "Keep Alert on the Roads". Persuasion is being used by grabbing the attention of the reader. Any pet owner would never want their cat to be harmed by an automobile accident. This picture is trying to persuade people to not only keep an eye out for cars on the road, but to also be aware of animals. It is not a rare occurrence for an animal to venture into the road which is why the poster is trying to spread the word for drivers to be alert. Too many times there is road kill on the side of a road. By having many people see this picture, the number or harmed animals could possibly be reduced.

The person who created this poster did it in an effective way. The message was clearly stated and was said in as few words as possible. The graphics also convey the message in a very clear way, so even at a glance it can be easily understood. The poster is also tasteful. It does not show the result if someone is not alert on the roads, but rather who the victim would be.

  27. The picture on the top left corner is a great example of propaganda. Many people all over the United States smoke cigarettes but many also do not know what it does to you in the inside and how it affects your lungs. This picture is a very persuasive example because it is saying in other words, that your lungs get damaged each time you encounter a cigarette. This propaganda is shown through a very straightforward and serious way. I believe it was made to move and touch people’s hearts in a way because if you may know someone who smokes you have every right to care. This is how this propaganda portrays itself.
I do believe this picture is effective. I would not necessarily say this is offensive because many people are opinionated about smoking, but for the most part does not affect the smoker itself. It is pretty obvious and clear, what the picture is trying to say and the message it is trying to send to people. Overall, this is a common and effective propaganda. Many people will recognize this as a positive propaganda.

I choose the poster with Uncle Sam on it say “WE WANT YOU” because it wen a lot when u saw and were reading It. This is very persuasive because during WWII the army wasn’t very strong and we needed help from any one. When a male saw this poster he felt like he had to fight for his freedom and country.
I feel this poster was a very effective idea. I feel this way because the poster was Uncle Sam looking at you and pointing saying “WE WANT YOU.” Now I know if I was around in that time and I saw that poster I would sign up to be in the army because I would have felt that my country needs me more then ever. Overall this is a positive and affective propaganda.
