Blog 21 - Value of the Arts

DUE TUESDAY APRIL 8, 2014
Think about the following topic:
Many people consider the arts--literature, music, painting, and other creative activities--unnecessary because they provide us with nothing more than entertainment. Yet the arts are extremely valuable because they have much to teach us and also because they help find meaning in life. Post a link to an image, song, movie or any other creative piece that relates to your response - analyze the value of that piece in the second paragraph in relationship to your argument. If you don't think the arts are valuable, post a link to a piece that supports your argument on that side of the issue.
Assignment:
Is the main value of the arts to teach us about the world around us, or to only entertain? What can we learn from the arts about society, culture, human behavior, morality and values?

Plan and write a 2-paragraph response in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and specific examples. As always, include a 2-3 sentence response to someone else's blog post--building upon it, disagreeing with it, or re-thinking it.

  1. The arts are a declining activity in today’s society. There are not as many kids today that desire to play an instrument in the band, or to be in the drama club. However, the choir is always brimming with students, because it seems you have to be a good singer to establish a name in today’s music, rather than gaining musical acclaim by composing, or playing something. Those two options don’t seems to appeal to most of my generation. This is reflected by the decline of membership of the band and drama club here in Dunellen. Though it may not be as large a drop in general, it is very noticeable in our school. People like to hold the stereotype that band is for losers, and the drama club is stocked with nerds. This is far from the case. The two groups are filled with great people who love what they do and are good at what they do. In turn, they make everyone around them better and more excited for the activity. For example, I know I would be completely lost if Kaitlan Markus wasn’t next to me in jazz band. As a beginner trombonist, it’s always extremely helpful to have a veteran with you, helping you along the way. The same goes for the host of senior drama club members who’ll be leaving us this year, and who made the plays better by being there.

That is one of the reason I believe the arts are both for entertainment, and to teach us about the world around us. The arts obviously entertain people, but it also has a learning opportunity as well. For example, while working on the plays here at school, I learn all kinds of things about hard work, dedication, and what it really means to be a part of the arts. You have to be in a work mindset, and that’s a lesson in of itself. I got to watch Ms. Houston and those withmore experience than I as we pieced together our productions. I was there as we scrambled to top off our last show, Guys and Dolls, and was there when we rejoiced at it’s success. All in all, I learned much, and hope to continue to learn.

    1. What value does band and drama have, though? What can it teach us about the world? Apply what you have written in the first paragraph to the question. Use specific examples - at what moment did you learn dedication and hard work? The second paragraph is a bit generic. What do you learn from Ms. Houston and other veterans? When?

    2. I completely get what you mean about how in today's generation people are misguided by what the true meaning of art is. Marching band is sometimes viewed as a hobby for geeks and that should not be the case. If more people viewed art for what it really is the world would be a better place.

    3. Zach I agree with what you're saying about today's generation is changing by what the true meaning of art is. Bands are an art and some people think that it's something that weird people do, but that's not true. Everyone should open up more to what art really is.

Around the world, everyone has their own meaning of what art truly is whether it be expressed by culture or theater itself it stays true to it’s meaning. The main value of arts is to teach us about the world around us. In the art of literature, William Shakespeare was a person who was by far the greatest writer of all time inserted his thoughts into plays such as Romeo and Juliet making it a play worth watching. From Shakespeare’s plays we learned the profound modern English language used in it and how it would portray the scenery around it, which is what the art of literature truly is. Literature also has poetry, which can teach the world how to put words into writing making them fascinating to read and comprehend. When painting one stroke of a brush can later on create a masterpiece. For example, the Mona Lisa painting is known for whom and what does it portray leaving artists and other people to rely on their thoughts. Paintings show something and one can learn from it by what it represents and what is the true meaning behind the painting such as what is the true meaning (theme) in a book.
Just like we learned things from growing up as a child and using them to improve our development we can use what we learn from the values of arts to improve our caliber of the world of arts. When I listen to music I don’t just hear it but at times I also try to visualize what’s going on in the song and how it relates to events or changes going on around the world. I can relate a song to a past experience or think of what the song’s meaning is leading to know, music is not just for entertainment. When a artist writes his song the lyrics can sometimes be drawn in from his emotions or past life making the song worth the listen. In today’s world, any country you go to they will have different values on arts and they portray it differently then most people do.

    1. Plays should be in quotes or italics. What do you think is the true meaning behind the Mona Lisa?

    2. I liked your response, but I feel you could have improved in some areas. Try to expand on what you think the meaning is behind some of your examples, such as the Mona Lisa and Romeo and Juliet. I like how you said you try to visualize the song, rather than only listening to it.

  3. I believe art does have a meaning to certain things but for the most part I feel as though it is for entertainment. Most people draw for fun, yet others draw with meaning. Those who do art with meaning have a purpose in what they are doing. Those who do art for fun are just creative people. It’s all a matter of how you look at an art piece. Some people draw/ do art for fun, but some people see a meaning into it.
Art in today’s society isn’t all that common; unless you consider music as art, but I see those as two different things. Art is full of wild colors or could be very vague. It can have all sorts of different items and random things. For example, a picture of a man hitting someone could show the artist as a aggressive person, but others will just see it as it is. So to some people art has some value to them, but for most of the time art to many people is just a picture or image.

  4. I personaly think that the arts are dieing in todays society. Kids don't want to act in drama or play any kind or instrament. Instead children rather sing in choir which is always booming with children. Children also like to paint, draw, or anythink artistic. Unlike the other choices such as acting, or playing an instrament. This is due to one major part which is stereo types. These people think that people that act or play an instrament are losers. They think that its just a whole buch of nerds and unpopular kids. While its the total oppasite. The kids are not nerds but regular students even some athlets are in the play or play an instrament. These arts are also entertaining.
These arts I think are entertaining for two reasons. One in the play its all acting were you cant even look away. The second reason is that with instraments the music that is made from them is sothing and entertaining because you can not stop listening to it.

  5. The arts have become a field in which there is less and less amount of people making into it and the creativity are becoming more judgmental and critical. The arts have very few ideas left to be discovered. In art such as painting, the creativity is all about who came up with it first and did it now. For example there is an art peace that is in museum in New York for famous artworks and one of them is a big white canvas, and in the middle of the canvas is a red dot. The artist to it then explained to the audience that it is more than just a red dot in the middle of a white canvas. It represents a single person in today’s society versus the world and everyone else since no one was there to help him. So he stands alone and strong. Furthermore, there is dance and music which is also part of the arts. Dance relies on music, and without music dance is just movements without a beat to it.
Moreover, music and dance both vary depending on the ethnic background and culture to it. For example music from the Dominican Republic is about Merengue which have lots of fast pace rhythm along with verses that talk about either the struggle or love towards someone. In addition, Colombians have music called Vallenatos which is mainly love songs and a slow pace and rhythm to it. The dance to it is also slow and lots of body to body dance to it. Then if we look to music in Europe, there is a lot of techno and house music to it. The music is lots of fast beat and jump to it. It doesn’t necessarily show the culture of where the music.
All in all, the arts does show, demonstrate, and teach us about different cultures. And even sometimes the music can unite people together. Music and art all over the world can show the struggles and significance of what is going on in their location.

    1. George, I agree with your statements about the arts and how we have few things left to discover. People nowadays don’t really care about going to watch a play, which is understandable because why would you watch a play where people could constantly mess up then watch a movie with high definition sounds and brilliant displays. The arts aren’t as appreciated any more.

  6. Many people believe that arts do not have valuables and cannot be useful in a human’s life. That’s because they do not realize that most of the art works have to be based on an idea or an inspiration. Arts can be used to entertain and could also be used as a factor to teach us about the world through paintings, graffiti, music, sculptures and many more. In many works of art, the artist must express his or her idea and expression through pictures, colors, shapes, textures, sounds, and possibly many out of the ordinary factors such as shadows and the use of nature. Expressions that cannot be easily explain by words and texts are often presented through the strong images and ideas of the artist.
One example of an art work that is useful is the Recycled Sculpture by Sayaka Kajita Ganz. (http://vectroave.com/2010/02/recycled-sculptures-sayaka-ganz/) The artist put useless elements together to make sculptures of horses emerging out of the wall. The idea of her using objects that cannot be used anymore into something unimaginable is outstanding. It teaches us that unusable things can be re-used to make beautiful effects. There is nothing that is truly inadequate, if you know how to put it into something different.

  7. The value of the arts around the world does teach us about the world itself. Not only does it teach and inspire us but also it entertains us. In ways that it would entertain us world the world would be for example in restaurants. While sitting down, enjoying a good plate of food our most likely to be surrounded by different drawings and/or paintings of some sort. It’s these kinds of paintings that make you feel at ease, as if you were at home. By analyzing the paintings and its detail, you can figure out what kind of painting it is and discover what your mood of it is. Paintings and drawings can make you feel emotion, happy sad, angry, depressed; all depending on your own perspective and your outlook on things.
A way that music can keep you entertained is by its rhythm. Music is used for artists to convey what they feel, and have their voice heard. It is used at parties, dances, formal gatherings. Music is used to bring people together, to make break the silence in the room, interrupt that awkward moment. It entertains us because its beat takes us on the dance floor, lets us response to the message of the song by dancing.

Art is something that anyone can make. It can’t be bad or good. It comes from the heart and nothing can change it. Art is a way to express yourself if you are too shy to express yourself verbally. Also, without art most people will be kept in the dark away from the rest of society. Art comes in many different forms whether it is a painting or an invention. We need art because without art I don’t think the human race would never have the modern technology we have now. The iphone for example is a work of art everyone uses it and everyone has it. Even if you never had an iphone in the past the first time you use it you want one immediately. It makes life simpler and it is easy to use.
Art does not provide us with entertainment but it also helps society. Just like the Wright brothers they made the first flyable airplane that was a piece of art we use today. Weaponry is art, some weapon related breakthroughs has helped us in wars. Tanks guns and the nuclear bomb are all art that we need to fight in war and to keep the U.S.A a free country

    1. Though I agree with most of what you are saying, I have to honestly disagree with the fact of weaponry being a form of art. War is not art, nor is weaponry. Anything that holds the potential to kill any living being is not art, but merely a weapon. Art is a form of expression without words, and though guns sure as Hell can't speak (We'd be boned.), they express emotions in the form of a metal coned-cylinder with enough force to kill an elephant propelled by the explosion of gunpowder. And that, my friend, can leave someone speechless, but also breathless. (Yes, art can do that, too, but that guy will still be able to walk and talk and, you know, be able to have a beating heart. But that could just be a necessity.)

  10. Art is something everyone has their own point of views on. A single piece can be regarded in thousands of different ways, for every mind works differently to analyze art. A focal point may be used by an artist to try and draw certain emotions, correlating to what the piece of art represents. What this means is that artwork can be influential, educational, inspirational and can help so many people in so many ways. Because artwork draws emotions from its viewers and artists, art can change people. Art is sometimes used to entertain, but undeniably in other ways it is meant to make a statement, draw attention, and even heal its viewer. Since everyone views art in their own way art can be influential to one person and derogatory to another. Art can be educational by representing something to someone that can certainly change their life, or by the statement the art may be making. Art can have the power to opaque minds and manipulate them.

The piece that I have chosen can be taken in different ways. It is possible to draw serenity from it, or quite possibly depression from it, or a mix of both. One might view the art as rousing, joyful, or sullen. For the human mind is complex, and all minds differ from one another, allowing this art to be taken in different ways. Since I probably view this piece differently from you, I view it as a bit depressing, but at the same time it resembles serenity and solace to me. Serenity because of the beauty in the way every part of the piece links perfectly to make it eerie but understandable. Solace is derived from the art to me because as I look at the piece I don’t view it as skeptical, but instead, understated. This art is inspirational because of its eerie prospects of how the floor touches the sky, while swings are falling from it. All in all, art is not only for entertainment as I have proved by this piece.

    1. Leah, I completely how art can be interpreted distinctly by different people because everyone is unique and they can have contrasting opinions about pieces of art. However, this concept is not just limited to artwork. For example, different people like various types of music and they have their opinions of these different genres. One person may not like the style of music because they are not a fan sound of it.

    2. Great vocabulary, but try to be more specific about the things that art can teach in the first paragraph. Explain how art can be influential and derogatory with specific examples. What statements can art make? Refer to specific examples.

  11. We’ve seen it on the walls of cavemen, the scrolls of Egypt, and (Depending on how you see it) everyday right in front of you. But what is it?
No, it’s not WiFi or Air, no. This is, of course, art. The one thing that, even after the death of humanity, will still be alive and well (To some extent).
But what is the value of ‘art’? Does it teach us about the world? Or is it simply to entertain? Now, this is all relevant from person to person, but art, is not pure means of entertainment. Yes, of course some pieces can be simply that and nothing more, but art is, as a whole, much more.
Art is history, art is emotion. Art is whatever you want to perceive it as. Art teaches us the past, as it is written around it. Such is true on many chapels. The art on the walls, though may not be original, is history, telling the stories of years past. Without it, how could we ever decipher the events of the past to the extent we have today? Art from today and the past show of society, culture, and human values/morals. What is painted, who is drawn, how it is made, all stem from the common behavior of humans at that time. That is why many different past eras have various different art forms that are the most popular. Today, that would have to most likely be urban, as it shows freedom of the soul, and, in many cases, the lack of following higher authority (As most is drawn illegally on private walls and such).
Though this is all speculation and merely what one individual thinks, one this is for sure, and that is that art will never, ever die.

The value of arts to many people today is just entertainment. A lot of teenagers today are influenced by what they see on the media, such as twerking, getting high, and that having so called "swag" will get you everything a person needs in life. The music that I listen to impacts me in no way, I don't bother listening to what is popular. The kind of music I listen to has a theme that isn't sexual or inappropriate. Some of the music I listen to is actually inspiring, but the songs that don't have that theme are just songs that I believe have a good beat or rhythm.

Other than music, the arts, no matter what kind of arts it is, are supposed to teach us things that we can use in life. Such as martial arts, which isn't all about fighting. To me, martial arts is a way to release your inner self, when you do martial arts, you just let your body flow and have fun. A person can use martial arts in their life, professionally or just as a hobby that helps a person relax. The arts should be much more valued than it is today, and it shouldn't be portrayed in such sexual content as it is today.

  13. The arts are defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. It has always been part of human history even before language was invented. In the past, the arts reflected the time period that they were created in. For example, Pieter Brueghel was a renaissance painter who depicted the life of peasants. Brueghel and other painters were able to show what the time period was like back then and what people’s attitude toward things were. This gives people in our current era an insight what our previous generations were like. Plays and dramas written in the past also teach us a lot. For example, Shakespeare’s works have taught been able to entertain for hundreds of years but, his plays and sonnets have done so much more. He is the one who started using modern English in his plays which is obviously a huge influence on society. Some of the things that Shakespeare wrote about such as insanity, lust, deception are still relevant culturally today. All of the themes and lessons like love and hatred shown in “Romeo and Juliet” are still applicable in to society. They still have the same morality and values. The old arts have deeper meanings and value than we think. They are just not for admiration and entertainment.
The arts in today’s society are also more than just something that entertains us. For example, songs that we listen to are for our enjoyment but, some of my favorite songs are ones that I connect. All music tells a story and anybody can relate to it. Songs describe someone going through a certain experience or an emotion a person is feeling. This makes it relatable for everyone and people all over the world can connect with that same feeling or experience because of one song. Music is something that can make people cheerful, ecstatic, sorrowful or thoughtful. It has an impact on human behavior. Dance is also a great impact on society. There are several types of dance such as zumba, ballet, tap, hip-hop, meringue and so much more. All these different dance styles originate from diverse cultures but, they are popular worldwide. As with music, dance is more than just entertainment. It allows people to express their emotions and tell a story without using words. Instead dancers use body language. All in all, the arts in today’s society are more than just entertainment. It allows people to express themselves and allow other people to connect which is very important for people to do.

    1. I agree that art does have a purpose for more then just entertaining. Shakespeare was a great "artist" and his themes are recognizable in today's society. However, there are exceptions to this. For example, if you would turn to my response and watch the video I left a link to, I think you will find that art can be purely for entertainment.

  14. I believe there are many values of the arts. First of all, the arts are used for entertainment, but thats not there only value. Most of the arts do not have a main value necessarily, they are used to entertain, economic purposes, and to learn. The arts include literature, music, painting, and dramatic performances. All of these provide us with entertainment, but there more to them then just that. The entertainment industry is a multi-billion dollar business or a series of businesses. They are an important part of the economy today and it could all collapse if there is no “art.” Also we learn everyday from the arts. We learn history and religious beliefs through literature. When we learn how to play an instrument, we learn a new way to express our feelings and thoughts through the sounds of music. Also when we paint a picture or when we draw something we express our thoughts and feelings on a piece of paper that can be shared generation and generations from now. We learn and express our feelings the same way hundreds of years before and after, “history doesn't repeat, it rhymes,” a wise man once said.
    http://cdn.techdirt.com/i/theskyisrising.png
The link I choose is a picture that relates to the value of the entertainment business or the “arts.” The picture shows how much the industry has grown. From 2005 to 2010 the music industry has grown from 132 billion dollars to 168 billion dollars. That means the arts are getting more popular everyday. More people want to listen to music, watch movies, or watch a dramatic performance. The people are not just making money there learning from it and taking their ideas into new prospective and applying it to everyday situations. That means as people were progressing forward into the future.

    1. Repetitive sentences and off topic elements. Try to stick to the question. How do we learn history and religion from art? Give a specific example. What thoughts are expressed about various historical societies through their art? What do certain cultures hold as valuable given their art subjects? The image was supposed to be a piece of art.

  15. Art, whether it be in the form of dance, music, literature, or painting, is enjoyed by all. Some believe art is merely for entertainment, while others think that it can teach us important lessons and fond meaning in life. The way I see it, those that think the latter of the two is true are people who like to think outside the box. I count myself as one of those. Yet I still feel art can be just for entertainment. Really, it depends on what form it is in. Dance, for example, is simply to amuse others. It is a way to just let go. The audience can also enjoy the amazing moves that the performers have practiced. As far as I know, dance won’t help you find a deeper meaning in life. However, literature is usually analyzed thoroughly and tends to have a deeper meaning. It’s the reason we have English class. Every story has a theme, and the reader must “read between the lines” to figure it out. These themes are messages about life the author is trying to convey to you. For example, one of the themes in "The Giver" is the importance of memory. In the society, they had decided to abolish all pain. To do so, they had to rid of all memories that had happened to mankind as a whole. All the war and deception of mankind, eradicated. Of course, the officials realized they still needed these memories, and that was where the giver came in. He held all memories the officials didn’t want the public to see.

Art, as in paintings, can be either when it gets down to it. There are famous artists that paint magnificent pieces that express how they feel and the struggles they have faced. Then there are those that draw simply for their own amusement. Like I said, it depends on how you view art.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crm79j1qeqA

So, what did you think of the song? Very catchy, isn’t it? Anyway, do you think that a song like that has a deeper meaning? This song is a perfect example of art that is merely for entertainment. The artist just sat down and wrote up a catchy song for the viewers to listen to. He didn’t pour his heart into it and express his feelings about life. If you try to find a deeper meaning to that song, then you’ve dug to deep and have a lot of free time.

    1. You should look into the history of some of the cultural dances of various groups of people -- they are definitely expressing views about that culture's beliefs, such as the Sun Dance. What does "The Giver's" theme tell us about the society it was written in? Can we see what is important to the author in her theme? Also, it is your job to analyze the clip you posted, not the reader's.

  16. Art is the most valuable piece in earth because it symbolizes peace, life, and culture. When people hear art they think of paining but that’s not quietly right. Art can be music, painting, dancing, designing clothes, and computers. All art has a meaning behind the object or song, and those things do teach us a lesson about life. For example, " Hall Of Fame" by the script the meaning of the song is about never give up and you should go for your dreams. When People listen to the music they will feel motivated and really know who they really are and what's happening around the world. Art from different culture symbolizes their ancestors and their nation. In Ecuador we have a lot old boats because our first ancestors were African Americans and they will always fish out the ocean. Every art has a meaning and we have to look or listen to get what the message is saying to us.
We all know art is to entertain us and everything but we have to take the art serious and see what it's telling us. I love to look at art pictures because many of them do have a meaning and I know some don't have meanings. Also with music when we listen to music it sometimes changes our life and we are a different person and with drawings too.

The value of the arts is not just to teach us, but also to entertain us. The arts is important whether it's music or literature, it's still art which ever way you look at it. Music is one of the biggest known arts in the world. Classical, pop, rock, etc, it's all part of the arts. People don't look at literature as such an art because it's just poems or books that we read and they have no meaning. Books teach us many things, such as new vocabulary and life lessons. Also, music can teach us things, such as how to be brave or how to stick up to someone whose being mean to you. Literature and music can teach us a lot of things about the world.

We can learn many things about the world through the arts. Literature teaches us about history and culture, life lessons. Music can teach us about history and culture as well. Paintings can teach us about the perspective of someone. For instance, the way I may look at a person and think of them might be a totally different perspective from the person standing right next to me. The arts teaches us many valuable things in life that we may not be able to learn ourselves.

You also mentioned books as well, I would recommend you to go look at my response because I talked about books and how I think they effect us as well.

    2. But what does classical, pop, and rock music tell us about the culture which created it? What are the values of pop/country/rock musicians? How do they represent the life style of the genre? Also, I completely disagree with your statement about literature. You need to bring in specific examples and focus on the question asked. You don't actually say which pieces of art teach us history or culture. What do we learn about the history or culture through a certain painting?

  18. Art is an extraordinary thing. It allows people to express themselves, but also gives people vast knowledge. Art cannot be categorized as pure entertainment or completely informative and helping people to learn and become more knowledgeable. Art is both; it does not serve a main purpose but rather has many purposes. Art does have a lot of value for entertainment. For example movies can be considered art; they portray the art of making films and of acting and drama in an enjoyable and fun way. Most movies made are for the purpose of entertainment and people pay a lot of money to see movies ($9.50 is a crazy amount of money to see a movie, and don’t get me started on the cost of popcorn and soda). I myself am a movieholic (I know this is a made up word), my dad and I usually see a movie every weekend, unless there are no big name movies out. But, movies though entertaining are also informative. Many movies relate to a topic and raise some form of awareness or knowledge about it, thus informing the viewers. A lot of movies, even action and gore movies have a sub plot about two people falling in love, and this can help inform people about love and how to treat others and be in a relationship. Another example of how art is informative yet also entertaining is the story, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In this Shakespeare’s writing is beautiful and great to read and his puns are clever and humorous to read. Although enjoyable, it also teaches about many things. One theme of the story if infatuation versus love. In the story the reader is constantly hinted at the Romeo does not love Juliet or Rosaline, because for both all he cares about is their looks. He marries Juliet after knowing her for a day! This can inform readers to be smarter about relationships and determine the difference between love and infatuation. So, art does not have a specific purpose and art can be created for both entertainment and information and teaching lessons. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&docid=pqc16Z63lPGYCM&tbnid=IYb-iMNA-0_mAM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fhollywoodonoakton.blogspot.com%2F2012%2F11%2Fromeo-and-juliet-1968.html&ei=-qhEU_bxCMPfsATakIKYAw&bvm=bv.64507335,d.dmQ&psig=AFQjCNGwKYHFXH-z34DDu31sTyQ2_kWjNg&ust=1397095023313692 (this link is to a picture of the 1968 Romeo and Juliet, which relates to what I talked about the story being informative and entertaining.)

    1. In this second paragraph I will not talk about Romeo and Juliet further and what it can teach us, for I have already done that. Rather, I’m going to give examples and ways that art teaches people and is informative. Art can teach many things. Art can teach people about love. For example movies have love interests and these love plots can inform people on how to behave in a relationship. When a character does something that ruins their relationship, people learn not to do that and it can better them. Art can teach people discipline. For painting or drawing, artists must be disciplined and paint with precise and accurate motions to create a beautiful piece. Or in drama, performers must learn discipline. They must behave well and be attentive to learn their parts and become better performers. If they goof off and don’t try or care they won’t become good actors or actresses. Art can teach people about history. Drawings and paintings from the A.D. era helps historians and humans learn about what life was like. For example the paintings on caves or drawing in rocks, depict what life was like for ancient people and what their mindsets were. The art of eras pat such as the Byzantine era helps people understand what life was like. The swastika is a form of artwork, and it now represents the Nazis and the horrible Holocaust and the tortures and pains that it brought. Art can teach life lessons. For example, many stories are written that have valuable themes. A story I read in seventh grade taught about how people shouldn’t steal and stealing is wrong to do. It showed a young boy who tried to steal a woman’s purse to get money to buy shoes but was caught, and she gave him money for the shoes after informing him of his wrong doings. This can be used in life for people to stay good citizens. Artwork that shows drugs to be bad, such as a circle with a cigarette in it with a huge diagonal slash, tells people to not smoke. This shows that cigarettes are bad and people shouldn't smoke because the slash in the circle represents to not smoke. Art teaches many useful things to people. The list of what are teaches is endless, these are just a few examples of what art teaches and how it is useful to people.

    3. Overall, solid examples, just remember when you bring something up, analyze it fully. What do the paintings of the Byzantine era say life was life? Be specific - what is shown in those.

  19. I think that there is a purpose to art. Art isn't just for entertaining purposes, it is to inform us about things that is going on around us. Although, art can be for entertaining purposes. For example, a sketch of something can be jut for fun and to entertain, but a real painting in a art museum isn't just there because it was drawn or painted well. It's there because it has something to do with the world and it gives us informat

    2. Remember to include specific examples and complete at least a 2 paragraph response. Pick an art piece of some medium and discuss what is learned by studying it. What does the piece show? What can we learn about the artist by looking at it? What can we tell about the time period he or she lived in? Behaviors that were common or frowned upon? Are they praising or criticizing something? How do you know?

Arts have a huge impact on society. Whether it was before or this current era arts have always had a huge impact and influence on people. An art is not only paintings and drawings. But art is anything that is creative that can be shared with the world in a fascinating and glorious manner. This includes music; literature, movies, images and etc. are all just a few examples of what arts are. Arts are valuable because they tell stories that other people can learn from, and then apply that to their life by either learning from it, or making the same decisions as they saw in the art work. For example, when reading books, the reader is often gets to see up close characters actions and how they deal with problems. Sometimes characters in stories may have the same problems that the reader has and the character’s solution can act as a solution for the reader as well. Or it could show the reader what could happen if he makes the same decisions that the character does in the story. Another form of artwork that tells a story is paintings. Have you ever heard the saying “ A picture is worth a thousand words.” Of course everyone can look at a painting and compliment it on the colors, and how fine the shapes and figures are made, but when you dig deeper in it, you can find something else. When people create pictures, they are creating a visual view of something they have experienced, and the picture acts as the visual explanation to the experience.

The picture that I have included in my response is a picture of the book Crank, by Ellen Hokpins that I read over the summer. This book has changed my life in ways I can’t explain. In the book the main character Kristina struggles with drug abuse, and abusive relationships with other people. Even though I never been through the same situations as Kristina has been through, I know people who have and this book allowed me to experience what they were feelings and thinking. That’s what I love about artwork, it gives you a chance to experience life through someone else’s eyes. You get to step in their shoes and see what life is like for them, and for most people, this really does influence how they think and act from that point on. That is why act work is important.

    1. In the first paragraph, try to include references to specific trends in the arts and what they teach us about the society that produced it. For example: why did the early societies paint hunting scenes in caves? why did the medieval period concern itself with religious topics? why were the rich the only ones that were depicted in portraits until rather recently?

What do all of these things say about culture of the time?

  21. Many people consider the arts--literature, music, painting, and other creative activities--unnecessary because they provide us with nothing more than entertainment. Yet the arts are extremely valuable because they have much to teach us and also because they help find meaning in life. Art is what keeps people sane. We learn from art and express our ideas and creativity. It teaches us to be true to who we are. How to except our true selves, except those who are different. Art can teach us that carrots can be purple and that is is okay to be different and not to be afraid to show who you really are inside. Can be someone's own world where anything can happen or appear at their own wish. A visual story book of our emotions and skill on different levels. I personally believe that everything human and nature made is art. I sketch, computerize and play sports all have to do with art and their creation and mean so much to me that they basically control my life till the end.

Art changes human behavior, for example if one keeps a wall grey their mind will follow, meaning if there is going to be nothing drawn here then that persons mind, body and soul be become dull and boring. Art will bring it to life. Cultural art releases the beliefs and way of life they live day by day. Recently art has been abused and tossed around by society. For instance, swag, sexual songs, and offensive street art has been treating art like trash because art is not meant for selfish and childish manor. Art is meant for a way for one to express their difference and be proud not to lie and cause others pain.

  22. The arts are a very important part in the world we are in today. There’s far more to it than just to entertain. A thing such as literature teaches us many words of the English language. For example, Shakespeare introduced many words we use today through his plays, sonnets, and poems. Music is also another type of the arts. Music builds our knowledge and capabilities. Our memorization skills develop as we begin to hear to songs on the radio over and over again. Music can teach us stories and how life was back then. Many artists talk about their life and the struggles they went through and people dislike rap music because it’s rowdy, stupid, etc. But I find old school rap educates me on how life was back then. Also, music helps teach little kids their ABC’s and 123’s. The arts help promote the opportunity to express oneself through poems and music.

  23. I agree with the reasons you provided with in your blog such as Shakespeare's modern english language making us learn more and view the language in a different way then we do today. Definitely, the memorazation part got me to understand how it makes you understand music Better and of what it can be about. The abc's one was clever great response.

Art to many people is just boring things. Some may even say that artwork has no meaning. Those people probably just look at the boring and bland stuff. I am pretty sure everyone listens to music, and guess what that is a work of art. There is so much art out there with every song painting and sculpture and monuments. There are some breath taking things out there.
For example in egypt there are so many paintings of pharouse for us to remember them. The pyramids which are their tombs their last place of rest. The pyramids are the most architectural things out there. They are filled with writing (hieroglyphics) and paintings and gold sculptures. And there is not just one pyramid out there, there are multiple of them in the world including the mayan pyramids and stuff. All of them being art and having art in it.

  25. The main purpose of the arts is to entertain us. Before the times of television and radio, the arts were the only source of entertainment people had. Plays, paintings, and music, were the only escape from their everyday lives that people had. It was a source of joy for people then, and it continues to be to this day. The arts can change the way a person feels; it can make a sad person happy, or make a stressed person relax.

The arts can be a source of education also. This is just an added benefit to the already beneficial arts. When something is made in a specific region, it will most likely, whether purposeful or not, reflect the themes and ideals of that region. In this way, while people are enjoying the arts, they get the added benefit of picking up some knowledge about the are the art is from.
