  1. Hurricane Sandy was not welcome here. It was unusual to have a hurricane in New Jersey, especially this far inland. I didn’t think that the hurricane would hit us but it really did, and at a high level. Thankfully, I had a generator and I could keep running power to my refrigerator, TV (no cable) and DVD player. There was no damage to my house although there were trees down all along my street. I was with my parents for the storm, sadly but I got through it. During the storm, I just hunkered down and stayed calm. After the storm I read by the fire and napped a lot.
After the storm stopped, and people got over it, there was still no power. So I watched seasons one through three of The Office which kept me occupied for about four days. I really took time to experience how life was in the olden days though, in that way, I appreciated it. The day the power came back on was kind of awkward. I almost wanted it to stay off because I found that there is no real need for the excessive use of power that I consume. Some of these things can be replaced by battery operated or natural sources: TV = Radio, Furnace = Fire, Movies = books and one of the most important, cell phone usage. It was generally a good experience and I somewhat enjoyed it. It was truly a lesson on what gets taken for granted.

  2. I was looking forward to the two days out of school because of the hurricane but then we lost power. In my head I was saying the powers not gonna be out that long because its only wind and no rain. Day three no power i thought was gonna loose it, no tv, no heat and worst of all no videio games. So for the rest of the week i just sat there with no power. The only good thing about the storm is i got to sleep in.

The start of the second week sill no power and bored out of my mind. We still had football practice and that kept me entertained for at least two hours of that day. Everyday going from hotel to hotel or house to house was the worse because i was getting tired of driving around. Then we finally get power and i hear we have school, that ruined my whole weekend.

  3. Hurricane Sandy was a memorable experience. We got emergency phone calls in and out, few from my brothers college strongly advising to evacuate students, and numerous for the evacuations of families out of home that could be in danger. Reality hit, winds gusted through the tiny cracks of my window all of Monday night. I shook with fear as my house lightly swayed, all I could do was hope that everything would be alright. During the hurricane, all power was lost and there was really not much to do because of it. Typically, Monday nights would be saved for sugar cookies in the oven and watching my favorite television show, but not that Monday. Hurricane Sandy brought darkness and fear to my home and probably throughout all of Dunellen.

When the storm became calm it was a feeling of relief. Personally, the storm wasn’t as bad as I thought it would come out to be. There was physical damage inside or outside of my house and my whole block made out fine. The main problem of Hurricane Sandy was the enormous blackouts all around different towns and cities. It was quite an overall shock of how the shore got hit though. When I saw the horrific images of destruction done to the Jersey Shore I was devastated. It was miserable to see a place so close to me really end up like silenced damage. Hurricane Sandy had a fair toll over New Jersey.

  4. The day the storm hit on Monday I went to the mall with my mom early in the morning. She had a few things she needed to pick up so I went along with her. After we had gotten home I was in my room for a while reading and listening to the wind. As the darkness of the night approached I was getting nervous that my power was going to go out. The lights started flickering around 6:30 when the winds started to pick up. The wind was so strong. My neighbors from across the street tree fell down onto another tree. Luckily, no one was hurt. Unfortunately their transformer blew up and caused a power outage across the street. Seeing that was pretty wild. 7:59 Monday night, I lost my power. When I lost my power I was in my older sister’s room watching the news, but then suddenly it went out. I wasn’t bothered much because it was just the first night. Little did I know that I would have no power for eight days.

The day after the storm I turned my phone on. It took a while for me to retrieve and send messages. Since I am so attached to my phone, it was very frustrating not being able to communicate with my friends easily. I received a text from Bella and she had asked me to come over so we could look around Dunellen and see the damage. So I went. Seeing all the power lines down and fallen trees was the scariest. Everything looked like such a mess. For the remainder of the week I had hung out with my friends and had sleepovers just so we can entertain ourselves without power. On Friday I went to my grandmother’s house until Monday because she had power.

Returning home to no power and no heat is not what I was looking forward to. Some of my friends had gotten their power so they offered for me to go over and stay. My house was 50 degrees. It was absolutely freezing and too cold to stay in. I slept over a friend’s house that night. The next day my mom picked me up around 2:30. We then went home and she told me to pack another bag because I was staying at aunt’s house. My aunt lives on the other side of Dunellen and her power was restored. So we all went to my aunt’s house and were just hanging out there. Around 9:00 my power at home came back on. I was thrilled and very excited to actually sleep in my own house. Although when I came back home the house was still freezing, my mom turned the heat on high. I slept with 3 blankets, but by morning the house was warm and nice. This storm had such an effect on my family and I. it is definitely an experience I will never forget.

  8. We are expecting power outages across the tri-state area starting Sunday evening into Tuesday that will be caused by the storm. I channeled surfed until I got to NCIS not knowing that this would be the last show I saw before 6 days in darkness. It wasn’t until half way through the episode that I heard a screech from my carbon-monoxide detector and the TV shut off the power had gone out. I ran around the house collecting flashlights preparing for the night. I hoped that it wouldn’t come to this, but it had we were prepared, or so we thought.
Every day it seemed to get colder 59 degrees at the warmest no matter how many candles we burned. At first we were hopeful but as the days passed we became anxious going through computer and TV withdraw it seemed to last an eternity. To pass the time I built a fort every day for my little sister I started to run out of ideas and she had energy to burn. It was crazy in her house we went for a walk every day, but there wasn’t much to see in Dunellen alone. My day worked all week day and night so we couldn’t leave town to go somewhere warm. It seemed like we were living in the Amish world not knowing if it would rain the next day, not knowing anything.
We had found out about the firehouse having a warming and charging station there we went there Saturday and Sunday night. On Sunday night we were driving home from the fire station and saw lights on our street we lit up, hoping for the best. Unfortunately we were part of the last 3 houses on the block without power. We sat in the dark for the seventh night in a row until 8:42 when we heard the screech of the carbon-monoxide detector. Everything began to light up power was finally back. All you could hear or see from outside were the screams of delight and every light in town turning on, but that wouldn’t be the end of it.

  9. The experience of living through Hurricane Sandy was an extremely interesting and difficult time in my life. Although the hurricane caused much damage, I could have been worse. Citizens of Dunellen were very lucky compared to other towns and cities near the shore. We were not affected by the ocean or heavy rainfall, which helped save our lives and homes. During the storm itself I was terrified because it was destroying our roof. Also, my family and I had watched a tree almost fall on our house. Seeing the large tree with colorful leaves, swaying back and forth created tension and terror within my family. It was strong enough to stay standing and keep our lives protected.

In addition, the storm had a horrible outcome that affected a ton of people in the state of New Jersey itself. The main effect was the loss of power. At one point all of Dunellen had lost electricity. With this loss, it was more difficult for everyone to live the way that they were used to. Families, including mine, had no other choice but to find another place to live for the past two weeks. My family had stayed at my grandparent’s house, my father’s house, and my uncle’s house. We were blessed with the fact that they all had gotten their power back before we did.

Finally, there was another major effect on the children in my family and others. This hurricane caused boredom. Children had based their lives on electronics in order to keep themselves entertained. We no longer had television, computers, and mobile phones. Our family started to play board games, and put puzzles together so that we would remain occupied throughout the experience. This was a time in my life that I will always remember and would not desire to relive.

  10. Hurricane Sandy caused widespread destruction in the shore and slightly inland areas; power outages, numerous trees down, extreme flooding, and in the most severe instances the complete demolition of an entire home. Because many people were not ready for the storm, it left people panicking at the last minute. Store shelves were left completely empty of dry foods, generators, batteries, flashlights, etc. After a grueling night of winds up to 90 mph, many people woke up to no electricity, however, what they did not realize was that it would remain this way for nearly 2 weeks at the least.
My family in particular did not go into the extreme cases of buying extra food, candles, batteries, or even a generator which we all regretted after a few days sitting in the dark at home with nothing to do. Most of us didn’t realize how much we truly depended on electricity for everyday activities. Having an electric stove and heating system seemed to hit families like my own very hard in particular. Means of finding food every day and staying warm at night became a real struggle.
All in all, the storm was both a lesson learned and an eye opener for many people; the lack of electricity at the highest position. As most of us have power now, after almost two weeks without it, we will still never forget all the struggles we had gone through and how blessed we were to make it out of this viscous storm alive and with our homes still intact.

  11. Hurricane Sandy was a very memorable event that will be talked about for ages. It was extremely destructive, and for some at the wrong place at the wrong time it was deadly. Since this storm knocked out most of Dunellen's power, there was not much that could be done. So for the most part I was stuck in the house with my parents as PSE&G tried to fix everybody's problems. But since a giant tree fell ontop of some main telephone poles and wires the next street over, the power ended up being out for nine days for our house. At night the house would go down into the 40's, and eventually it was unbearable so my family and I traveled to our aunt's house in Staten Island where they never lost power. This idea was very smart and ended up giving us warmth and heat which was all we were asking for.

Since my family and I were stuck indoors for several days, we had to find something to entertain ourselves and pass the time by. But since power could not be used to do so, things were limited. By the end of the day, we were either playing UNO, Monopoloy, or Clue. If we weren't playing games though, we would be driving around in the car trying to find something to do, but also to warm up. By day nine the power turned on though, so once we got back home from our aunt's house we turned on every single light in the house, blared music, and watched TV. This was our experience when Hurricane Sandy hit.

  12. “OMG Hurricane Sandy is going to kill us all!” “Find shelter!” says everyone. In reality, the week of Hurricane Sandy was a week of pure boredom. In my personal experience, My power went out before the hurricane even came. I went to work on the day before Sandy. My job at the kennel consisted of cleaning the entire outside of the building to make sure nothing flys away, as the kennel easily floods. Everyone was scrambling around, trying to find shelter for the 40+ dogs that were boarding, whether they were rescues or had homes, all dogs had to evacuate. I took home 5 dogs, consisting of two pitbulls, a shih-tzu, a Chihuahua, and a Jack Russell terrier. I had no own dogs, too. They all hung out in my house and were chillin’. They barked all night, then when Sandy physically hit, they were quiet instantly.

Sandy hit on Monday, October 28, 2012, exactly one year and two months after Irene hit. My power went out at 4:30 on Monday. It came back on for ten minutes, and went out again for 7 days and nights. We couldn’t go outside to play, since there was so much damage to the town. I went to work everyday, though there weren’t many dogs to take care of. Nightly, my family sat in the living room, doing nothing. I went to my grandparents house for one night, since my mom was at work. I went over night to my dad’s house one night, but we slept in his office since his house had non power. We brought out pit and our yorkie to sleep there, too, and they played all night. I spent the rest of the time powerless, but it wasn’t too bad. I went out with friends and kept entertained once the power did come on. Damage was minimal to my neck of the woods, but overall, this was a very boring experience with dead electronics and no free wifi.

  13. The days of the hurricane were not what I expected them to be like. At first I thought it was going to be really boring, no internet, no lights and no power. It was going to be a nightmare for me. My mom wanted me to read books every day and do chores. Luckily my dad told me not to do that, because I was sick and it was dark. He told me to rest, so I could feel better. I was also worried of what would happen to the people that were really close to water.
Before the lights went off on Sunday we watched 2 movies together as a family, I was so happy. Later went the lights went off, we started telling stories about our childhood and our best memories. We also read scary movies and we were so happy to be doing that and spending time together. When the storm was over we went to look around and see our families. It was fun, also we went to look for gas and luckily my uncle had some for my dad. The storm wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was that bad for me.

  15. The night before the bulk of the storm hit my brother and I went out looking for a redbox somewhere nearby my my house. We had gone out at about 8:30 at night which probably wasn't a good idea because even thought the storm didn't hit yet the winds were starting to pick up. Monday night came around and that's when things started to get intense. Winds were violently shaking the telephone poles and tree branches were flying everywhere. I eventually lost power around 7 o'clock that night. No cable, no internet connection, nothing. I shrugged and thought to myself that we would probably get power back in a day or two, but oh was I completely wrong.

Days and days went by and I can honestly say it was the most boring nine days of my entire 14 years of living.I had no idea how hard it could be for someone living in this generation to live without power or anything electronic. It's actually pretty upsetting how much this generation depends on electronics to keep us entertained. Throughout the week I did end up hanging out with friends and doing other things like practicing for sports. I find things to do even without my electricity.

Sandy didn't really affect my family in a big way but we did have one of our biggest trees in my backyard fall down and it still has not been removed by the tree services. My family was fortunate enough to have a generator that heated our home and supplied electricity to out most needed appliances in the house such as our refrigerator, microwave, and my chest freezer in the basement. Even though I did go nine days without power, to some the damage to my house was only an acute problem. Some people up in Staten Island, and people who lived down the shore had their entire house taken away by flood and fallen down trees. So with that being said, I am very thankful that nothing devastating happened to my house or family

  16. Hurricane Sandy, was probably the worst thing that could possibly happen to me and my family. It all started in the early morning when I woke up, it was scary and chilly outside since it was all dark, rainy, and windy. It was a nice day to just stay at home, watch tv, or sleep. I was very entertained on the computer watching videos with my mom when "BAM!" the house vibrated, was so intense it felt like an earthquake. At first we tought it was the shutters that were slamming agaisnt the house for the whole day but then as we heard my aunt scream we ran to the front to realize that the huge tree that was infront of my house was now IN my house. The top and bottom rooms on the left of the house were completely destroyed but the other half of the house is good.

After that we were made to evacuate the house and so we went to my grandma's house which was not so bad since they had power, it was warm, and my cousin was just finishing to make cupcakes. The first I did was watch some good tv and eat a cupcake, it was going fine until just about 7:56, just 4 minutes until my favorite show started the power in Middlesex decided to go out. It was fine because we were prepared with flashlights an eveything, what was not fine was that the upcoming days we were going to possibly be disconneted from the world. Us, being the young generations were raised with electronics so it is pretty hard for us to not have power for a whole week. The phones are dying, computer battery is going down, no tv, no instagram, no anything. But me and my cousins weren't going to put up with that so we went to Target to find a cardplug or something to charge our phones, there was nothing. So instead as we saw a man charging his phone on one of the pluggers in the electronic area we decided to do that too, we stayed there for about 2 hours until all of our phones were charged, and we bought a board game to kill the boredom back at home, then we went out to eat. So it wasn't really a bad experience we got to play games, get to know out family well, and most of all experience a time with out electronics, this was like a challenge it made me realize that life isn't all about electronics and fun, we can live with out them.

We got our power back last sunday which was a mirracle but we are going to have to go back and forth into my grandma's house and hotels until they fix the house, which is not a bad idea at all. In the end besides the damage done to my house, hurricane sandy wasn't that bad after all, it was a learning experience that I will always remember.

  17. Hurricane Sandy was a moment in our lives that many of us may never forget. The preparation we all had done days before the storm, the destruction it had caused to the environment, and especially the damage done to our homes and mental wellbeing. Before the storm had hit my family was prepared just like any other family although my parents had a feeling that this storm would cause great damage to many things in our state of New Jersey. Therefore, my family and I were ready for the worst that this storm had to offer. As the storm hit my family would watch updates on the news channel figuring out when the worst was about to come. Then suddenly the storm grew bigger and soon the majority of our town’s power went out in a rapid movement. Trees being pushed down by wind and rain caused destruction because of the storm. Rain and wind after more rain and wind caused great deals of damage the last thing we could do was hold out until the storm was over the next day and see what happened to surrounding homes, buildings, and especially our whole town
Destruction covered the whole down when the storm was over. Trees knocked over, power lines dangling in front of homes and buildings tangled within broken branches, and no power anywhere. Our town had been powerless for a large amount of time. Days go by not being able to use technology due to the power outages, seeing more and more people outside than usually because there would be nothing to do inside their homes without power. Staying in powerless homes was a problem due to heat causing the homes to be very frigid and very hard to actually live in. Day after day still no power caused my whole family including myself to almost go crazy, our generation is greatly based upon technology that once we are hit with a few days of no technology we all go into shock and terror. Although this storm has caused such great damage it was a great way to experience natural disasters and what sometimes we must go through in life and always rebuild after.

  18. the day before the hurricane i wasn't really nerves because I never seen how much damage it could really do but around 7 pm the next day it sunk in. This sunk in because i had no power and winds where over 90 miles a hour. As I look out the window i could see tree falling peoples stuff getting broke and toss around like it was nothing. For a day in a half i felt hope less because millions of people were without power and people I've heard have been killed. This was the scariest thing in my life. For the first time I didn't know what to do or how to help.
The days post hurricane were hard for me and everyone in NJ. That next day after the hurricane i sent 10 or more hours help people who lived around me with what ever they needed help with. That day I've seem people lose everything from there basement to there house. I couldn't believe how much damage there was it looked like there has been a war in Dunellen. But the one thing I will never forget is how people during tragedy can come to gather and put their differences a side and help anyone in need. That day i felt like NJ went from being a state to becoming a family.
